I used to travel under the viaduct during my apprenticeship at Upper Boat and I always thought that it looked really good as its setting in the valley was close to perfection. I was sad when it was demolished, but leaving one pillar standing seems pointless.
Been up there exploring one day, in the late 1980's, there was a bit more to see on the Barry line, and a few more railway artifacts still visible including a trackside phone cubicle box (minus the phone!) at start of the viaduct on the Ty Rhiw side. A great pity the viaduct had to go, built for a purpose, then like other railway infrastructure with no further use, simply abandoned, discarded, then finally demolished. It served it's purpose in it's time, but times change and so does purpose. Thanks for sharing it and of what remains.👍
I walked over the viaduct with my father and grandfather .I think the year was about 1960 ish my grandfather was a signal man on this line, long gone memory
Terrific work, particularly the construction images and video of the location of the former north abutment which I hope to visit myself one day. Just one point to make; there are 2 pillars remaining, one you mentioned by the A470 and the other just a few yards away from the south abutment.
Fish are very interesting creatures. . My mate Daz is as mad as a stick and can regale everyone with tales of anything, Great he is, but just a glint off the water on a summers evening, and a little ripple there he goes. It's a kind of existentialism as both instincts fight one another. Of course we don't say anything when he comes back out. It wouldn't be polite.
Thanks for a great nostalgic video! My parents had dear friends who ran the Ty-Nant Inn nearby so the area was very familiar to me. I used to climb up to the very top of the pub garden to look down into the cutting on the Barry line. Also, I went by steam train twice to Barry Island (annual Sunday School trip) over the viaduct travelling from Pengam (Mon) via Bargoed and Caerphilly. So sad that these great relics of our industrial past are lost.
Great footage kevin, shame about the second set. This could do with going globel. It's also a shame about the bass taking over the recording.Still lots of fun.
