RU-vid makes searching through my content a big pain -- if you'd like to see a list of playlists links for every game I've ever played on stream check out this Games Database spreadsheet: marstead.com/games
I've played this game since 2006, went through the "decline" of Runescape, and experienced the joy when osrs was released. Some content is only just now opening up to me at 28. This video has put into words so many things I find amazing about this game. Thank you for making this, I will be forcing everyone I know to watch this.
Thank you! As an on-again-off-again RS player since 2002, I really enjoyed this essay. You made me appreciate the game in a whole new way. I think you did a great job of arguing why this is such a unique gaming experience, and helps me understand why I've never really found another MMO that I enjoy quite as much.
I'm not even halfway through but this is already one of my favorite videos on OSRS, and you eloquently explain and define so much about this game that I love but have never put to words before. Also hyped that you put the thumbnail for my onechunkman series along with the other snowflake ironman videos, im honored :3
Still early into the video, but I think your classification is spot on. As evidence, I would point to Melvor Idle convincingly replicating the OSRS experience (IMHO), even considering how much was abstracted away. It's really interesting to me that the Idle aspects could be successfully distilled even further than the inspiration without compromising the most enjoyable part of the loop (for me). Someday, in a retirement home far off in the future, I'll be playing OSRS, quite content in my peaceful corner of Gilleanor.
The transformation from noob to someone creating a spreadsheet to optimize the gang activity in Shayzien has been an amazing one to watch. Can't wait to see how much more you evolve as a player as the series continues.
Wow, you got way better compared to episode 1. It’s good you had mostly spoiler free help from your chat. I had my friend do the same for me when I started my Souls game love with this very same installment. I’m PC only, so no bloodborne unfortunately
Yay another DS playthrough to watch :) Excited to see how you make out. Your OSRS not being an MMO led me to a gold mine. Soul’s games, kingdom come, hitman (hopefully you played 2 and 3 too, all hitman is amazing.
as someone who played a lot of mmos, and especially recently FFXIV, my main thought each time is "man I wish this thing from runescape was in" but never the other way around
Wait since when is wow not a idle game? I mean jobs, leveling alts, low item level gear farming, gold farming, some might even say raiding, mount farming. I played 2,8 arena pvp in wotlk pandaria and drenor and I basically always played something else, watched a movie/shoe/anime Or was programming.
You should really play Eve Online, you are just describing Sandbox vs Theme Park MMO's. Seems odd for someone who has as much experience as you do that you didn't gravitate to the terms already well documented on this design space.
Having made it halfway through at the time of writing this comment, the "hazing content" has slowly started to fade. The poll pass threshold is now only 70%, meaning more content gets added to the game, and a lot of recent updates haven't even been new content, they've been rebalancing a lot of the mid game for both skilling and PvM.
Around 1:17:33 you talk about Hazing and gatekeeping as if there's just a universal truth that these are bad. An odd point considering the only reason OSRS exists is because of gatekeeping, and like military culture, prides itself highly on suffering. If you remove these things do you really have OSRS?
I have a feeling that guy is meant to be mispronouncing ardougne there since it’s a bit of a meme how hard people find it to pronounce. And some random farmer from the other side of the continent makes sense as someone who wouldn’t know how to pronounce it
this is more like , runescape isn't an RPG, it is an mmo though. i'd play offline runescape tho, atleast there's no bots buying every shop empty. the integrity is already ruined by rwt. i'd even pay for offline runescape if the updates kept coming.
Bro this goes so deep. Played OSRS for 10 years and you presented many elements which I havent even thought about. But one crucial thing which was not mentioned but keeps the game going is the super passionate devs. Most of the devs are veteran players and experienced the downfall of the game(and the start of rs3), which acts as a motivation to not fk this one up
I had no idea they were so close to the 2007scape backup! I imagine they looked okay when the whole game briefly looked like that but I really think they are ugly compared to the flat colors of OSRS. I guess the problem is every time they go back to try to update stuff it's impossible for them to catch everything and so the consistency just gets worse over time.
What's confusing me most is how in the first episode you were really quick to identify the tick system and then you learned how to flick prayers. You showed all the signs of being a very fast learner of how this game works but when there's any amount of stress involved you completely blank out and make terrible choices lmao
I’m not going to spoil the story in case you haven’t gotten there yet, but basically fight arena has one throwaway line of dialogue that probably was added without much thought but turns out to have massive lore implications, so it kind of feels like they had to include it even though there’s not much going on in that quest
I would like to say the use of "training" vs "grinding" for me mostly shows a difference between training and getting a definitive increase (gaining XP) and grinding (killing Zulrah 1800 times and not having the item yet).
Oh my I remember the first time I forgot why I was skilling when all I wanted to do is finish a quest I technically had all the requirements finished for. Going back to kill the boss, failing and getting back to skilling.
Slayer is probably one of the greatest inventions in all of runescape. It's a skill that by itself encourages going out and killing a bunch of different creatures. Which is already hard enough to do. AND means none of the quests can ever have "kill 15 ogres and bring me back 15 ogre hearts as proof" as a foundation of a quest. Forcing the quests to be more creative than a skill you have already been grinding on. Combined with great flavor and integration with the world. The sheer joy people get getting a "good" task. It's fantastic.
Saying runecraft and MTA require the same level of attention as Inferno (or at least that what the graph implies) is SLANDER! even if you don't use the more afk methods of training rc like blood rc (zeah) and ZMI altar, between banking and getting to the altars (i.e running) definitely has you being able to "afk" as you can easily run for 10-15 seconds (sometimes even more depending on pathing) until you have to click on a new tile to run to. arguably less clicking than agility with its rooftop course obstacles only spaced not more than 10 tiles apart (click every 2-3 seconds) (since this video was uploaded before the MTA QoL update and gotr I won't mention them, I still believe my argument is valid with rc not being as intensive as Marstead claims. I won't argue with the fact that it's slow or anything, but it can certainly be chill, even before blood rc). otherwise a great essay much love and agree with everything else <3
I love how this video managed to put into words what i could not about runescape, but also allowed me to finally identify why i love "Mabinogi" so much, its how much like rinescape, it feels just so different to everything else out there
Oh, seeing Devious Minds reminds me that a jmod answered that it was the quest with the shortest dev time in RS2 up to that point. That at least partially explains it standing out from the others as weird.
