I find it so petty of the Crusaders to not allow BARRY FINNERTY to solo .. just because he got standing ovation …. That’s so INSECURE FANS LIKE ME WHO LOVED THEIE MUSIC WOULD BE WAITING FOR BARRY TO TAKE A SOLO IF I WENT TI A CRUSADERS CONCERT & BARRY was in guitar … I would be going to that con day with high expectations of hearing BARRY FINNERTY stretch out I would have been so very disappointed if I had gone to a Crusaders concert with Barry in guitar … and they didn’t even let him get one solo I would feel very cheated out of my money for tickets to that concert The whole thing about the CRUSADERS were the features of a fine guitarist …. Epically after LARRY CARLTON left …. If they didn’t have a decent guitarist they just might have lost me all together I know they called their production the FOUR KNIGHTS … But they shit themselves in the foot if they had a very capable guitarist …. And didn’t give him some significant light …. Surely I loved to hear JOE SAMPLE …. And WILTON FELDER play their hearts out …. But after a taste of fine guitarists I would feel very DEPRIVED as a listener & fan … if they tally stopped featuring a fine guitarist along with them ..: BOTH BILLY ROGERS & BARRY FINNERTY captured many hearts Till this very day … There is no WINGS OF LOVE without a fine guitar solo like BARRY FINNERTY’s solo That recording is timeless guitar solo on contempory jazz &/or instrumental recording Till this very day … I listen to that recording … and truly BARRY FINNERTY’s guitar solo really carry’s the soul in WINGS OF LOVE Like I’ve been saying often : TYRANNY IS BAD FOR THE TYRANT Whoever made that decision to not let BARRY shine was really shooting them selves in the foot … and maybe even in the heart & mind

That’s really interesting interview … to me at least …. Being a MAJOR Crusaders & Joe Sample fan I really got into LARRY CARLTON ..: But after he left … it was BILLY ROGERS & then BARRY FINNERTY that I really got hip to … Me being both a pianist & guitarists …

Great interview both parts!! I didn't realize it was up already, I surely enjoyed it. I played on a few of the albums, in a non credited capacity but my name is in the album credits! Me and Larry also did some production work at Basix Records for a few artists.

How in hell can certain folks have the audacity to claim that melinated*Black people cant play R&R???!!! R&R was created, innovated, & pioneered by Black musicians, (vocalists, instrumentalist, etc.), beginning in the late 1930's/early 40's. The Black woman electric guitarist/vocalist was the first electric guitarist*[female/male). This talented black woman is the 1st person to play 'electrified' guitar in the early 40's.'SISTER ROSETTA THARP was; & remains the EMPRESS pioneer of r&r, point blank! County/Western is also a genre created by MELINATED PEOPLE, but was stolen/plagerized & claimed by Euro as their 'creation'...as usual!

😎😎👍👍Morris did a great job of fronting that band, but I can't help wonder what would have happened if Alexander had been the lead man. Morris is nearing 70. Too bad Prince didn't come to his senses and let The Time thrive.

@36:00 It's interesting that he used the same approach on drums that McCartney used on bass on Pepper and beyond - waiting till the track was otherwise finished and adding the drums (or bass) last to match all the nuances.

I would love to see a full set of Prince-affiliated artists like Jill Jones perform at the popular UK festival REWIND. It's basically the Glastonbury Festival for '80s-era artists, and those shows are awesome.

Brilliant performer. Maze is my favorite band...never viewed their sound as "primitive" but his contribution to Mr. Beverly's band can never be understated. He is a true musician, because he never once associated himself as being "in a group", just performed with such and such. Hope he keeps performing. Also great interview, but maze catalog is so much more than 12 songs deep, respectfully!

Was it true that AWB were named when jamming in London and a friend who was listening commented "You guys are just too funky for the average white guy"? PS At primary school I once shared a tea time meal with Hamish's brother David and himself when he was with the Dream Police. My mum thought their mother was a great singer with the church choir, although he was more famous for his amazing hairstyle amongst us wee guys! Great interview, thanks a lot

Great interview with arguably the best trumpet player & horn arranger of our times. I've been an EW&F fan since the mid 70's, and it wasn't until somewhat recently (maybe 10-20 years ago) that I learned that many of the horns in my favorite EW&F songs were actually performed by session players like Jerry Hey. I always thought that any horns I heard on the EW&F records were the Phenix Horns. Too late to ask Jerry, but I wonder how those session musicians reconciled "doing the work" on a recording, but not necessarily getting the recognition.

As I wrote on part 1's comments, At the 40th anniversary celebration of Purple Rain At Paisley Park, Apollonia 6 should've reunited and had The Time be their backing band. No lingerie needed. Just beautiful outfits. Minimal choreography. Just the three singing the best of Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6. Brenda could've sung every lead vocal track she did, Susan could've sung her leads and Apollonia could've done her and Vanity's leads. Would've been amazing, legendary and much needed for the fans and to further the legacies of Apollonia 6 and Prince.

Roame Lowry, aw yes the original Maze member the bad brotha with the bongos/congas Oh my God, remembering my parents taking me to those Maze concerts in the early 1980s with of course Frankie Beverly This brotha plays so very well on the Live in New Orleans/Los Angeles albums very great. I wasn't around when the group first started as Butlers/Raw Soul then comes Maze featuring Frankie Beverly So being born in 1980 was when I knew about Maze when they released "Joy and Pain" album then more albums followed until the Live in LA album the final from Capitol-EMI Transitioned into Warner My parents and my family became huge Maze fans they started watching their concerts, playing their music at family reunions, parties and cookouts That made me starting buying their albums as anthologies, greatest hits, slow jams compilations on CDs The morning after Maze becomes TMF so I'm glad to hear about this new group. Great interview!!!
