To all the comments about "20 pulls is normal for old sleds" not if theyre maintained properly. The skiroule rtx's were known for vapor lock yes, but i started on a 71 scorpion 400 ccw, had a moto ski capri, alouette escort, and skidoo olympic 335. All started with 3 to 5 pulls. When manufacturers started going to mikuni carbs in the mid 70s it was better. But 20-30 pulls was not "normal" for vintage sleds. I see all these young bucs cranking on these machines like youre going to break the recoil. You dont need brute force to pull over these engines. Nice machine! But yes the rtx was known for this.
That was a beautiful snowmobile when it first came out. The style was to die for! It was so sleek in comparison to other brands. It was also very expensive at the time. About $1,700.00 Canadian.
We had a 1969 Skiroule RT300 with the old body style and a 1972 RT340 with this same RTX body style. The 340 was had the 2 cyl Sachs and was very smooth / pretty fast. I used to go on long rides on the Quebec gov groomed trails back in the late 70's early 80's. You could ride to just about any city . The 1972 was so cool and modern looking.
I also had a 74 RTX 440 I bought in 1975. Dealer demo. It was beautiful and yes, fast for 75. I drove it everywhere- to school , work, church. And of course tons of riding. Mine started hard, but not that hard. Finally blew the engine one cold night when the cooling fan belt broke and I had no idea until I took it apart. Thanks for the video- it took me back 48 years!!!!😊
I had one of these back in 73, had to sell when every time you started it something kept cutting the pull rope. Dealer could not figure it out and I could not. SOLD it.
@@fouledplugsbluesmokegarage6585 No steel cable just rope in the recoil to start it. Something kept cutting the rope each time I pulled it to start. Looking back I wonder if I could have put some kind of still cable on it because the sled was super quick for a 440.
@@fouledplugsbluesmokegarage6585 we found over the years that they were very susceptible to any kind of moisture. Being a dealer and having six kids that like to snowmobile we went through a lot of them. Pretty much ended up switching them all over to tilton's.
Man!..if I could find one I'd get it running and use it! No parts sled! Parts are rare around here! Not a fan of those CCW engines....but they were quite durable and long life engines.
@@fouledplugsbluesmokegarage6585 I hear ya...I've went through that restoring motorcycles! Finding ONE Skiroule around here is tough...you'd NEVER find a parts sled! Your area must be the honey hole of old Skiroules! We had a lot of sleds out there when I worked at the dealership in the 70's....I just can't understand where they all went? I may have to take out a Skiroules wanted add!
Wish I had your resources for Skiroules and parts! Nothing around here and I search constantly. Where'd they all go? We had a lot of them out there when I worked for a dealer in the 70's.
Nice ! I'D love that one! Never saw an electric start 340 RTX!.. MY 72 Rtx 440 spit the entire trackl out behind me hauling down a road in the mid 80's! They don't slow down very fast running on just sliderails with no brakes!
That one is a neat one. Had a issue with it it broke one of the starter bolts in the lower case halves so I’m going to try to extract the stud or I have a extra lower case half I might just install
Easier to hang thr rear from back bumper doing suspension /track work! Just ubolt bottoms of shocks and leave them on the chassis. BTW....Thosre metal rear idler wheels were a retrofit to combat the plastic ones that broke if you slid into something hard sideways. They were junk...the rubber always unbonded from the metal. I had better luck with the original plastic idlers!
Yah I like having the machine upside down to do suspension on sawhorses. Makes it easier to move the track around and get them front suspension bolts in or out while fighting the track lol. You can actually get them idler wheels relined from a guy in the states lol
You sure that isnt an RTX With an RT hood? All the RT's around here in Minnesota had bogie wheels and no rear shocks ! My dad had 2 73 RT 340's. I rode RTX'S.
It’s a rt. The rtx would of came with the gauge pods and the shocks on the skis up front this one doesn’t. The rt 440s came with slide suspension and the rear shocks
Who knows. But this from someone who blew the head gasket but the pistons where cracked was surprised how it actually ran so well so it’s getting a different sachs 440 with more hp
Raced a 340 RX in the day! Only difference between the 440 and the 440C fan motor is cutouts at the bottom of the intake sides of the piston skirts. .....plus the dual tuned mufflers! ...which it turns out made more hp on mine than tuned pipes!
Bought a new RTX 440 IN '72 that had the dual tuned mufflers. 440s the engine sat right in front of you...447's they mounted the engine down in front! ...And I can relate to the vapor locking...nothing cured it. you just didn't ride it if it was 30,°f or warmer!
That’s cool to own one new! I hope to restore this one day. Yah I don’t like riding these Skiroules in any warm temperatures run great in colder temperatures for sure
Love the old Skiroules. Rode and raced them from 1969-1995. Wish I could find another. Currently sledless! Used to work for a Skiroule dealer in the early 70's.
