We are purchasing a manufactured home. So our crawlspace will be very tight. What do you recommend and do all these things apply to us? By the way we live in West Texas… But we do get a lot of rain sometimes and there's always water that comes from out of the house.
Hey! We would like to go into greater detail to explain properly. Feel free to fill out this Ask a Ninja form and we will go into this together! -crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
Getting ready to air seal the attic here in S. Tx adding blown in fiberglass, we live in a nightmare of a home! I have a hip roof design, that has slant roof louvers, plus what looks like ridge vents on the eave, some seem to be dummies and some, most, have been spray painted over, kind of sealing them, how do I fix this, just replace them all, and if so, the attic has zero baffles over these eave vents, would I need to install the baffles all around the perimeter? Are the roof louvers enough for attic venting in itself. We also have a chimney.. how do I go about insulating or creating a barrier when blowing in fiberglass.. Currently there is zero insulation around the chimney in the attic. Please help!
Once you have the e80 installed in a 1900 sq ft home, set to 45%, what would you say is an acceptable variance we could expect? From what to what is reasonable?
May I ask what is the mode setting for on the front interface ...just got mine June 2024....after washing filter and reinserting the unit sounds twice as loud... Thanks for time
Thank you so much for the information. I have a crawl space. They laid loose plastic, then covered it with a few inches of more dirt. Digging a trench to put in a sump pump then will install a properly laid vapour barrier. Should I just totally remove all the old plastic from under the dirt?
Is pier and beam better than a crawl space? If you get your house up 3 feet off the ground you don't have to worry about encapsulation and sump pumps, etc. What are the pro's and con's?
Some homes we have done have had 6ft tall crawl spaces. Encapsulating underneath your home improves the air that you and your family breathe. Feel free to submit a form here so we may go further -diy.crawlspaceninja.com/
There is plastic under the rocks in our crawlspace and it’s not connected to anything and we would like to get our crawlspace encapsulated. Should that plastic under the rocks be removed or replaced?
What if I am just going in the center of the area?I I want to run ductwork and some cablesto the center of the far wall in a room but there's currently less than a 1 inch gap in that part of the floor. As long as nothing is resting on the dirt is it ok to dig? What kind of contractor can I even call to do this work?
Not sure if you will see this but I have a april Aire 1830 that started leaking from the side durning operation. I checked the drip panel tray but it is clear. Any advice before I replace?
Most likely best to contact Aprilaire Tech Support as they can troubleshoot with you and maybe do a warranty claim for you to get a new unit! Their number is - 800-334-6011
This is exactly what I'm in the process of doing. But first I have to remove and clean my soffit which has filled up with leaves and fiberglass dragged into the space by squirrels.
Here in Illinois! When I call companies near me, they say that soda blasting is too messy to do in a crawl space. Instead, they use a HEPA vacuum and then spray it with chemicals.
There is tons of great options out there. Soda Blasting can be messy but that depends on how it is professionally done. As long as the mold is remediated and removed then job well done!
What’re your thoughts on laying down a second layer of vapor barrier over top of our existing vapor barrier in our encapsulated crawl space. It’s about ten years old and we’ve been down there a lot doing plumbing and other maintenance. The barrier we have now looks rough and has holes.
It is best to remove any old vapor barrier as that could contaminate your new vapor barrier with mold, moisture, and just overall uncleanliness. Also you wouldn't be able to prepare the ground for the new vapor barrier if old vapor barrier is on the ground.
Hi! We had mold air testing done in our home and the mold in our home air matched the air in our crawlspace. Long story short, there is absolutely no visible mold. We also just had all of our duct work replaced because there was gaps between the ducts and our vents but there is still mold in the crawl space air. Is it possible that it is just coming from the ground? If so, how would I deal with that without having to use harsh chemicals to kill it?
We bought a home with a crawl space. We have zero knowledge on them. The crawl space is completely sealed. There are no vents anywhere on the outside walls. There are 2 vents in the crawl from our heating / air conditioning. Last winter my husband went to check on the sump pump in the crawl and said the crawl was hotter than the house because the heating/air vents were open fully. So he closed them 3/4 of the way. He went to check the crawl again today and said there is some condensation on the “gravel” (dont know what it is) he said not much but there is a line from the pipe condensation. Our question is, should these 2 heating/ cooling vents be open/closed, seasonal? Thank you.
For Frigidaire, if you call the number on the dehumidifier, in 10 minutes you reach the "extebded warranty" person, who then put me on hold for 35 minutes. The lady said that they don't think it is recalled, even though the CPSC website clearly says it was. Who do you contact?
Not sure as we do not supply Whirlpool products. We currently use Aprilaire and they have a 5 Year Warranty through our DIY Store. Feel free to contact us at DIY@crawlspaceninja.com
@@CrawlSpaceNinja I actually meant Frigidaire, of the 3 I have, 2 were made by Midea, one was made by Gree. All 3 were recalled. The 3 Whirlpool dehumidifiers I own weren't recalled, but only one of them still works.

Anybody have any tips on insulating a crawl space that was a front porch but now its a living space. No insulation anywhere. The left wall is open with lattice covering the opening and cinder block wall to the basement on the right. The floor is not insulated and dirt base. Im not sure if i need to foam board the floors thats above and foam board the cinderblock? It has no mold but its a living space that needs insulation 😵💫😵💫
Hey Michael, got a question for you. I have a venter crawl space that sits on a concrete slab and has block for the walls. I'd like to insulate amd encapsulate. What I can't understand. Do I first attach foam board using Hilti nails, then encapsulate over the foam? Or do I encapsulate first then attach the foam? If the latter, how would I attach the boards over the barrier?
Hey! What you'll want to do is Foam Board on the crawl space walls first then Vapor Barrier over the walls. You can also use Insul-Vapor Barrier too instead on the walls. Here is a link to ours - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-ninja-insul-barrier-r-value-r-8-73-100-sq-ft/
After learning what this is and what it does its now on the "no squish" list....helpful little horrors. I only see them in the spring and fall when its generally more damp and gets chilly at night...i should probably invest in a dehumidifier
Yes! Enemy number 1 is Humidity. That is what starts almost all issues in the crawl space. As of 6/20/24-6/30/24 we have 15% off on all our dehumidifiers. Here is a link - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/dehumidifiers/
My main basement maintains a consistent 45% humidity level. An attached addition has a crawlspace with a 2 ft. by 3 ft. pass through. The crawlspace level is 65% humidity. I want to try a fan first placed in the pass through opening. Should I set the fan to blow INTO or OUT of the crawlspace? Thank you.
You will want to blow the air out! Also a Dehumidifier is the primary tool to regulate humidity to keep that humidity level down to 45-50% like your basment!
Bought a manufactured home last year, finally ripped out the carpet in the living room and replaced it with a vinyl floating floor and under that a very thick quiet mat moisture barrier. Once summer hit the subfloor under the vinyl has started warping. o_0 I am assuming the vapors can no longer escape due to the moisture barrier and is causing water damage on the subfloor causing it to warp. Before I replace the subfloor I need to figure out how to stop this from happening again... I am hoping just removing the moisture barrier under the vinyl floor will stop it... but idk.
Hey! We would love to talk more thoroughly about this. Ask your question on our forms and we will dive deep into this to do our best to help! - crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
You should also talk about the air lock problem, i installed a pump myself, and i did not know about it... untill the pump jam. Took me a bit to sort it out!
I live in a house that was built in 1830. stone foundation. no vents, no plastic, no insulation. My house smells so bad. Ive been living there 3 years and I cant stand it. Im at a loss
Your videos are very informative and greatly appreciate the info. However, centipedes are not insects. They are arthropods belonging to the class Chilopoda of the subphylum Myriapoda, an arthropod group that also includes millipedes and other multi-legged creatures.
Both can be troublesome. We have experience in both. 10 mil tend to be two 5 mils glued together which would create that cat urine/pneumonia after it peeled away. 20 mil tends to be two thick to be used in uneven terrain.
