Here's a simple example of giving respect to get it: I started to walk into a convenience store. A young Latino man got there first and held the door open for me, a fairly unattractive, gray-haired white woman. I said, "Thank you, sir." I respected him because he gave me that opportunity. If he hadn't held the door, there probably would have been no reason for us to interact, and therefore no opportunity to give and to get that respect. I will never forget his kindness. That's what all this starts with-- kindness.
"White people always wanting their respect like they deserve it for free" The problem is that the message would completely be interpreted differently if a white person said that about black people
I dont get these Kids, their logic is : my life is hard so im going to make it harder by ruin it and ruin my éducation and futur, people are racist so im going to prove their right and im also going to be racist ? Make no sence
I guess they forgot to mention Native Americans and how they were corralled into reservations, given numbers and were not allowed to leave a reservation without a permit. They were not allowed to vote or do anything else. They are the forgotten people in their own land. They were shot if they were outside their reservation or hung. Then came the residential schools and the horrific atrocities that went on in these schools to innocent little kids that were raped and killed. I tell you there's a lot of similarities to what Hitler did to the Jewish people and those are facts that can not be denied. Some even say "Get over it" Good movie though, makes one think.

I honestly couldn't see a way for her to connect with them and actually get their attention, she did it so well. I was more on the rolling my eyes side at that girl being racist to the teacher and saying she hated her just for being white. When I first saw that scene (before the teacher gave them the food for thought), my thoughts were "well your excuse for hating white people is bullshit, you've seen some white cops act racist, treat people too roughly and shoot them, so magically you decided that being racist against ALL white people is the solution? You want respect, but I would NEVER respect a racist like you for deciding that any random white person is just like those cops who beat on your family and friends those times in the past. The teacher has never been a cop in her life and could never do something like that to someone and you know damn well she never has or would, but you're using your own racism to justify hating all white people and pretending they could all just become cops and start beating on people of other races. "You hate me?" "Yes." "You don't know me." "I know what you can do!" No, you don't know shit about her. She's here to teach, and you're acting like she's already a cop threatening to smack you around and drag you out of your house just because OTHER white people have done that, people who were not this person who you don't know anything about." Yeah, if it were me I wouldn't have been able to get along with those kids, but the teacher had the right way to go about it. The shit they went through sucks, but using your own developed racial discrimination as an excuse to hate other people who haven't been a part of the problem isn't going to help. If I had to give it a name, I'd call what she has "traumatic racism". She has a valid explanation for feeling the way she does, but no valid excuse for the way she acts to other people, in my opinion. That being said, I wish the cops who had gone after her family and friends would suffer beatings of their own, and then see how they like it. Maybe they'd like to get dragged out of their houses and thrown in a jail cell for no reason. And as for those gang members who threatened her and said "today you live, but someday we're gonna get you" those bitches can get hit by a car for all I care, threatening the life of a high school girl. They have the guns and the power, why not, but they make themselves look like the biggest wussies on the planet right there. But when someone asks you to explain what you're feeling and going through, and your response is "I ain't explaining shit to you!" then from my perspective, you can change the attitude then, because you've told me that you don't want to be understood at all, and that you have no message to give. Again, I'm grateful she became their friend and did this all the right way, but I personally would have just sucked at it. I can't help thinking the kids themselves are approaching her the wrong way and saying all the wrong things.
