Buddhists reject this thoroughly! Hindus have No authority to categorize Buddhism. Hinduism is the asura Darsana since they hated god so much they cursed each and every one - there is not one god they have not cursed! They even follow Vedas which came from Brahma who not only lied and produced a false witness to claim supremacy but lusted after his own daughter. To call Hinduism astik is an insult to Buddhism since all the gods were Buddhist.
The conclusion is unfair. Charvaka definitely goads us to socially responsible behaviour which gives us pleasure and saves us from pain from irresponsible behaviour.
Also important to remember that none of the original texts survive, and we have at best, second hand references. Look at how much hate is given to god-deniers even today. It’s easy to see how only the worst aspects of Charvaak survived through gossip but the good died out. Some of their insights were extremely close to modern understanding of the world and neurology.
When Charvaka recognised air,water,fire & earth as 4 elements. We can identify the speciality of these elements. All these 4 have mass...all these 4 have weight. None of these are expandable but Space is expanding and it has no mass!! Here we must acknowledge the importance and significance of Nalanda - Taxila university!! They might have had research in metaphysics!! The common people & even ISRO scientists in this century of AI, stuck in idol worship and believe in destiny. So these teachings of Charvaka might not have been a matter in their understanding so hadn't received much popularity. Even in Ramayana, one of the ministers of Dasharatha,Jabali, explained the practicality of life & the myth of shraddha to Rama. Rama becomes angry and he wonders, why my father kept these kinds of people as ministers. So it might be Valmiki's beliefs obviously, which comes out of the character called Rama.

യുളീസസ് പണ്ട് രണ്ടു വർഷം ലോക പര്യടനത്തിന് പോയി.രണ്ടു വർഷം തൻ്റെ കുതിരപ്പുറത്ത് .ലോക സഞ്ചാരം കഴിഞ്ഞ് തിരിച്ചു വന്നപ്പോൾ തൻ്റെ പിതാവ് യു ളീസസിനോടു ചോദിച്ചു മകനേ ലോക പര്യടനംകൊണ്ട് നീ എന്തറിഞ്ഞുവെന്ന്. അപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞ മറുപടി , ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞ അറിവാകുന്ന ആ ആർച്ചിൽ കൂടിൽ നോക്കിയപ്പോൾ ആണ് എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായത് ,ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞത് അല്പമാണെന്നും അറിയാനുള്ളത് അനന്തമാണെന്നും. വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ് കൊല്ലം SN കോളേജിൽ വച്ച് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പ്രഫസ്സറായിരുന്ന ,യശ്ശശരീരനായ രവികുമാർ സാർ യു ളീസസ് ഗ്രാൻറ് എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പോയെം പഠിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ പറഞ്ഞു തന്നത് അതേ പോലെ ഇവിടെ ഓർമ്മയിൽ നിന്നും പകർത്തിയത്.
