Pottz surfed parts of a wave no one had ever surfed before. I watched him once climb onto the cylinder of a breaking wave from a big bottom turn and glide across it until he got to the shoulder, everyone else would have bailed out.
This was what the typical contest looked lilke back then. Was always glad to see the pros ripping it tho since this was my typical conditions. Our guys could compete in these type of waves no problem. Not that many wouldn't go on to surf Pipe, but in this domain - bring it on. I saw snips ripping 2 foot smyrna back in the early 90s. Throwing big spray. They knew they couldn't ignore the small waves. Florida guys can make most pros look like fools in these waves tho. They call it the florida hop, and you either got it, or you DONT!
