Back when Hugh Duffy hit .438 or .440, walks counted as base hits. No so anymore. Note: batting averages are expressed as, "four twenty-six," "four forty," etc.

Good baseball is far more than just hitting. In fact players perform far more in the field than they do at bat. They play every inning in the field but only about half the innings of a game on offense. Fielding is also more strenuous & athletically challenging than hitting. Players who are great 2-way (off & def) players at key defensive positions (2B, SS & C) are more valuable than those who are just great at offense. That's the reason why the incomparable Charlie Gehringer finished in the top 10 in MVP voting for 10 consecutive qualified seasons which was only matched by 4 other players in MLB history. Those 4 others all played either 1B or OF while Gehringer played 2B as well as any other player ever has & of course, was also a great offensive player. Another thing that Gehringer was all-time top level at was bare minimum negative play (SO, GiDP, Errors, missing games). I favor 2-way playing in MLB over just offense or just defense & especially not ignoring negative play which is done all the time now.

Aaron Judge will win a Triple Crown in his career
@HummaKavula-DontVoteForStupid
@HummaKavula-DontVoteForStupid 2 дня назад
I think it’s going to be difficult because batting average is probably the hardest one to get for the Triple Crown. Now, he’s doing great this year and hit over .300 in 2022, but there are other players that are better built for leading the league in batting average. This is one of the reason why more than 90% of Triple Crown contenders get the Homerun lead, get the RBI lead, but can’t get the batting average lead

From 1902 to 1916 is not 17 years. In 1911 the ridiculously ridiculous stat of “WAR” did not exist, so mentioning the Mathewson lead in a stat that didn’t exist but didn’t win mvp is moot. Also, WAR is ridiculous because it means “wins above replacement”- how many more wins a player contributes to his team than a player who would replace him. In 2022 Bryce Harper had a high WAR- yet the Phillies had a better record without him in the lineup. Meaning his high war score was wrong. The only way to judge WAR is to look at a team’s record when a player plays and the same team’s record when they don’t play. Ergo, the current “WAR” stat is ridiculously ridiculous

Sadly, most people only know of him because of the value of his baseball card. I know Wayne Gretzky bought one. My favorite story was the kid in Boston who was helping his dad gut a house and when he smashed through one of the walls he found an old coffee can with a Honus Wagner card inside. Years ago, when the Commodore 64 was cutting edge, I had the old Micro League General Manager's disk and you could enter data and set up entire leagues. I did, using players from 1900-1986. I would run seasons and Honus Wagner would always battle Ty Cobb for the batting title. Honus is definitely the greatest shortstop of all-time. I have him playing next to Charlie Gehringer in my all-time all-star team, with George Brett at third and Lou Gehrig at first (sorry Brooks). If you want to take a look at a player who gets overlooked by everyone who didn't grow up rooting for the Tigers in the 1960s, I recommend an expose on their catcher, Bill Freehan. 11 all-star appearances, including 10 in a row and five gold-gloves behind home plate. The forgotten man of the decade in my opinion. Went on to do a helluva job coaching at the University of Michigan for many years. The man who caught a leaping Mickey Lolich after he beat Bob Gibson in game 7 of the 68 Series. Anyway, that was a good video on a true legend.

Say whatever you wish about Barry Bonds. But what it comes down to is what they did ON the field not OFF the field. There is no telling what many of the Oldtimers did to enhance their performance. I don’t condone any PEDs but stats are stats. (I guess you could say Bonds benefited from steroids to boost his stats while Oldtimers benefited from racism to boost theirs)

The "Big Train" (greatest nickname in all of sports) was also a great all-around player. He hit 24 career HRs & 41 3Bs (more than both Pujols & ARod each had) despite playing the vast majority of his career in the dead ball era. He fielded 1.000% in over 300 innings TWICE. He won 25 games with an ERA under 2.00 SEVEN consecutive seasons. Johnson won 20 games for a losing team 5X & no other pitcher did that more than twice since 1900. He led the AL in wins 6X, CG 6X, IP 5X, SO 12X, SHO 7X, WHP 6X & ERA 5X. He transcends pitching in the dead ball era like no other & along with Warren Spahn is one of the 2 most complete pitchers of all time.
