Watching American films about Scotland can be misleading, you're seeing things through an American lens which is typically them extrapolating their own independence struggle and glossing anything else out. Scotland is very much a divided country with it's Catholic and Protestant demographics, from politics to football. Celtic is historically a Catholic football club created by Irish immigrants who found they couldn't play for any of the Protestant clubs. Rangers is historically a Protestant club. That was then, but times change slowly. Rangers are Unionist and Celtic are more Nationalistic (maybe). When I was a lad I went to a Scottish school and it amazed me all the boys supported two football clubs, their local club such as Dundee United and then Rangers or Celtic. When Rangers won the title you'd hear drunks in my town marching around shouting 'Champions' and this was on the East coast, Glasgow is on the West coast. William Wallace was handed over to the English by a Scottish Knight during or after the independence wars. I'm not a historian nor am I an expert on Scottish politics. So go look it up on Wikipedia.
