The tread pattern, cushion, and upper of the shoe are all designed with trails in mind. Is there a problem with using them to run on roads? No. Would they perform as well as shoes designed for use on roads? Also, definitely no.

Hi, and thanks for your beautiful post. I ordered the Lone Peak 8 last week (you cannot buy them in a shop in the Netherlands) and today did my first run in them They are too wide in the forefoot, but maybe thicker socks will manage. Don''t however know how running downhill will be... No real hills here in Holland. But I got a bit scared and insecure because these are my first trailrunning shoes and I want to take them with me next week for hiking and running in the Czech mountains. And now i learn from several reviews on YT that they are slippery in wet conditions? How did you expereience that the last months? And did you find out something about the durabilty?
@KentMearig
@KentMearig 17 дней назад
Hello. First of all, I'm really sorry to hear you had to go to the trouble of ordering shoes only to find that they don't feel like a good fit for your foot shape. That's hard. I end up having to order most of my shoes too. The outsole on the Lone Peak line is far from the most grippy, but all I can honestly say is that I've run hundreds of miles in my LP 6s and 8s in wet and technical conditions, so it must be possible to build up a level of comfort and confidence in the shoes. For durability, I'm not convinced that the welded overlays won't delaminate on any given pair (though they haven't much on mine), but the actual upper material has held up well to a few hundred miles of running, and I'm not disappointed with the midsole either. Best of luck to you.

These can be resoled with Vibram Zegama soles...I resoled my Superior 3.5...And I pretty much like them better than any lone peak or Olympus Ive tried on...
@KentMearig
@KentMearig Месяц назад
Running a vibram outsole on a lot of different shoes would be a cool experience, for sure. I just don't think I could justify the cost for a pair of shoes I'll need to replace completely after a few hundred miles anyway.

I got the LP7 about a month ago and have gone probably 100 km with them. It was all well until I was on wet and hard surfaces, rocks, pavements etc. I slipped many times if I don't step squarely down. I feel the edges of the outsoles are not grippy on these surfaces. Am not sure if anyone else has such experiences. Please comment. Tq.
@KentMearig
@KentMearig Месяц назад
Having spent more time running on wet, hard surfaces than any other kind, I can say that the outsole on the LP7 is pretty mid-pack compared to other shoes. They are usable on any occasion but certainly far from top-tier (not at all as good as vibram).

@KentMearig
@KentMearig 3 месяца назад
Until somebody I really trust tells me that the Timp upper is getting hundreds of miles without ripping, I won't trust any Timps to have durability. Also, the flexibility isn't for everyone, but the toe box in the Mont Blanc is way more comfortable, and there's a little more cushion in the midsole of the Mont Blancs at essentially the same weight. Truthfully though, it's that I know I love what I'm getting in the Mont Blanc, and I don't trust Altra to match it in the Timp 5. I'll be happy if I ever find out I'm wrong.

That changed obviously smh. I'd still enjoy hiking etc but the instability I feel in my knee from boots with a higher heel and narrow toe box just doesn't work any longer. I believe Altra has a few untapped areas .. a true hiking boot ( love to see an Asolo collab or Scarpa ) and work wear.. zero-drop is amazing .

Not sure if this is a serious or rhetorical question, but one answer is that the trails I run, even though they are quite technical, rely on the grip of the rubber compound in the outsole 10 times more than the traction from the lugs.

The Lone Peaks are definitely still in my rotation, but I basically only prefer them over the Mont Blancs when I know it's going to get really wet and I have less than 8mi on the run. @@DevelopingNL That's a tricky question to answer. The Mont Blancs are definitely a light shoe, that helps them feel fast to me. I would say that the midsole falls short of the energy return in elite racing shoes, but I still think it feels bouncy and fun compared to most alternatives once they're broken in. Zero drop shoes don't have the mechanics for speed, but the Mont Blancs have enough of a toe rocker to keep you moving forward.

I only ever fly drones that are under 250g, so there is some wiggle room around rules for "full size" drones. Additionally, I mainly fly during off season, off times, and from locations that are less visited. I know that there is a remote plane association that tells people they can't fly drones in the Mendenhall Visitor's Center area, but I haven't actually ever been told the same by forrest service employees.

I just picked up the Lone Peak 8. My first pair of Altras, my first zero-drop shoes. They fit my feet so well, probably the first time ever that a pair of running shoes are not squashing my wide feet. Now I need to find an Altra shoe for the road that will fit my foot just as well.
@KentMearig
@KentMearig 4 месяца назад
I think the durability with the Lone Peak 8s is going to be sufficient to make them a legitimate recommendation for anyone prioritizing fit. Mine are well over 200 mi now with minimal signs of wear. If fit is the first goal for a road shoe, I think the Escalante might be the safest choice, but it's not the most feature rich compared to modern shoes from other brands or even Altra's pricier options.

Hello Kent! Thanks for keeping us informed about Lone Peaks. I bought 6 and 7 in reserve, so I’ll probably skip 8th, but it’s still very interesting. As far as I understand, they removed the internal mesh from the top (as it was in 7), while the upper material became again like in 6. And in 6 it was not particularly durable (for example, I had tears at 400 km). I hope I'm wrong. Thanks again for the review!
