I got my first 5dm3 in Feb 2013. I had been obsessed with the FF look since 2007, when we were traveling Europe with an XT and XTi. I I’m not a professional so it was hard to justify. In 2013, my employer asked me to photograph the events they sponsor for next years calendar. My price was the 5dm3 kit with the 24-105 is l. My next trip to Europe was in 2015, London and Paris. Many trips around the US a two trips to Ireland, two weeks each. Loved the camera. We snuck in a Christmas market trip in December 2021, Paris, Strasberg, Prague and Munich. Camera worked great, but I was worried about the cover coming off and the 165k shutter count. In preparation for a September Paris and Ireland trip, I picked up a used one in perfect shape, 22k shot count and $500 dollars. I walked around Monet’s garden balancing the two cameras. Picked up a comfortable dual camera strap by Blackrapid and never looked back. Switzerland in August 2023 was excellent. I picked up the R6m2 this July and a few cheep R mount lenses. I see myself traveling with the newer 5dm3, the adapter and an assortment of my better EF lenses. I may take one R mount, but it will be location specific. I don’t know what is next, but am researching. I have greatly enjoyed editing my old RAW files with the latest LR Classic.

Great review! Two questions: 1. Your thoughts vs XF 23 ? 2. It would be interesting if you can compare Thypoch Simera 35 vs 28 for Fuji.
@rudermanphoto
@rudermanphoto 2 дня назад
Which XF 23? The f2? This is a much better lens then the F2, as for the 1.4 - it’s much better then the first one but I’ve never used the 23 1.4 WR so I cannot compare sorry. No plans to get the 35 in anytime soon but if anything changes I’ll let you know, as far as I can tell they should render almost identically from comparisons I’ve seen so it’ll be the same great lens just in your preferred focal length!

Gotta be a joke to offer such an expensive MF lens without electronical contacs for exif data. Voigtländer does it and their lenses are very good and made in Japan. This pricing doesnt really work with apsc. Makes sense on Leica, but not with other brands.
@rudermanphoto
@rudermanphoto 3 дня назад
Yeah the lens definitely was first developed for M mount and then ported across to full frame options + Fuji, rather then being developed first for Fuji; it’s why I opted to keep the M version over this Fuji one since I can always adapt the M one on Fuji and have the same experience, just with a worse focus tab and focus lock, but regardless it would be great to see a future iteration with electronic contacts like the voigtlander lenses!
@venom2k2
@venom2k2 3 дня назад
@@rudermanphoto yeah, a version with exif data support would be amazing. I hope Fuji puts out the x pro4 next year. I understand the price point of the Thypoch, but Voigtländer got the Made in Japan price tag and is still cheaper than this. This would be an Instant buy for 200-300$ less and the resell value is probably as well for X mount versions.

I am an admitted tripod snob, for ultra long lenses it just doesn't pay to mess around.... having said that I needed a small portable tripod for a bike trip and did not want to spend much thinking it very well could get lost or need to be dumped so I bought a Suri AM-284 without a center column. less than 100 USD and far exceeded my expectations, not going to be something you want to put an RB/RZ on but seems steadier than the one demoed in this vid. Its plenty strong and stiff for a Mamiya 645 and 110mm or something like a Nikon Z8 up to 300mm. Really a nice portable set of sticks, strong, light, packs well but fairly short... shortish is the price you pay for steady and portable. center columns are never a good idea EVER in my opinion
@rudermanphoto
@rudermanphoto 4 дня назад
As I replied to another comment - the center column being raised to the top was merely a demonstration at full extension, considering it’s indoors there’s no risk of wind knocking it over, when outside I’d never extend it fully unless the camera was really light.

I'm actually waiting for Voigtlander 27mm f/2 X-mount to be available again in my country. Seeing this makes me thinking to get this one instead since it's ready on stock. What do you think? Thypoch is 50% more expensive though and both lenses likely will suffer on slight parallax issue on OVF since I'm using X-Pro 2 now.
@rudermanphoto
@rudermanphoto 4 дня назад
The Voigtlander has electronic contacts and is smaller but doesn’t look as nice nor does it have the 1.4 aperture so depends on your use case - if you have the means to get the Thypoch you won’t be disappointed but the Voigtlander is probably a more thought through option for Fuji.

Thanks again for your info, and keep up the great work...

It does look nice, but annoyingly it has a common problem of manual lenses: the aperture spacing is not equal. f/1.4 and f/2 are really far apart, while f/8 and f/11 are bunched up really tight. It makes it very difficult to build muscle memory when changing apertures.

I have spent years in search of the "perfect" camera bag (I mean, like 20+ years) and finally have come to understand that there is no "perfect" bag. There are bags that meet your needs better than others and bags that are made better than others, but perfect (or really good) is certainly in the eye of the beholder. I have quite a few bags, and when they get used really depends on what I am doing, but I mainly (like 85% of the time) use two bags. My go to travel bag (when I need everything and I am going to be packing it all around with me because I live in continual fear that the one piece of gear I am going to need got left behind) is the Shimoda Designs Explore V2 (35L w/large cube). I initially ordered the 30L, but I typically tote at least 3 lenses (including a 100-500), 2 bodies, a drone and GoPro (filters, batteries, tripod . . .), so back went the 30 and I got the 35L. I also started with a medium cube, but immediately ordered the large. I have been working with this setup for almost 2 years now and this meets my needs perfectly. The Shimoda is also a super comfortable carry. Word of caution - this turns out to be carry-on size, NOT personal item. It will fit under a seat on some planes, but not most. My second bag (for every day walking around or even when travelling but leaving the big bag at base) is a Peak Design 10L Everyday Sling. It is what it says it is, an every day sling. I have and use a Peak Design Slide Strap, and it is good when you need that sort of thing, but I typically use a bunch of Peak Design Capture Clips - I have two on the Shimoda, one on the sling and another on my regular hiking day pack. That, in combination with the SpiderHolster SpiderPro Hand Strap (on each camera body), makes it so easy to have a camera (or two) on hand and ready to go while keeping your hands free. It took a long time to figure it all out, but this is what works for me. Your results may vary!

Thanks for the video. 1. I am not a big fan of normal lenses on small format cameras. However, the 28mm f/1.4 in your video looks like a great normal lens for a reasonable price. 2. I used an adapted Zeiss 28mm f/2 on my Fuji X-Pro1. 3. Eventually, I replaced all my adapted manual focus lenses with autofocus lenses because I had too much trouble accurately and quickly focusing my adapted manual focus 14, 24, 28, 35, 50, 55, and 135mm prime lenses.
@rudermanphoto
@rudermanphoto 5 дней назад
@@Narsuitus Yeah, its why I am keeping the M Mount version despite much preferring the design of the XF one, (although I much prefer the lens in silver) as I can adapt the M one to my Fuji AND still use it on my Leica and Lumix cameras too in full frame goodness. It would be great if seeing the lens has no contacts you could buy a kit to change the mount should you change systems or have a service that allows it but I'm unsure how feasible that would be given I don't design lenses haha

It works great just putting the remote on the hot shoe and you’re good to go. I shoot mine that way in the studio every time. If it’s not working you might need a new hotshoe mount.
