I believe the Toyota Seneca had this problem. To pass smog standards, Toyota decided to make the water jacket holes in the head gasket smaller to increase the temperature of the combustion chamber. The result was the oil passages next to the cylinders were overheating the oil, which caused fresh oil to sledge up. Toyota refused to warranty the engines that eventually failed, claiming that the customer didn't do the required oil changes, when then in fact had the dealer do them on a required basis. My daughter's KIA has this same issue and when it happens the connecting rod bearings wear out. The engine in hers has a lifetime warranty so when the connecting rod knock sensor signals you get a new engine as long as there is no sledge. Solution to make sure there's not a sludge issue by replacing the oil with diesel and then drive the car for 30 to 40 minutes. Pennzoil used to do that to engines in the 1960's and 1970's. It was a waxed base oil back then and even if you maintained proper oil changes the oil would sludge up. Bottom line is they car manufacturers instead of engineering a better engine to meet smog requirements today find solutions like smaller water passages in the head gasket, then claim when the engine fails that you didn't maintain the engine correctly, e.g. didn't change the oil as required. Then refuse to warranty the badly designed engine.

Watched both videos. Very informative and satisfying. Subscribed. Tip: I never replace crush washers. I use wheel bearing grease on the plug threads. Haven't had a leak on many many vehicles in 40 years.
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage День назад
Thanks for the kind words Tom, glad you enjoyed the videos. Since the crush washers are super cheap, we just like to replace them. What sometimes happens when they are reused, it can take more torque to get a good seal and people end up overtightening the drain plug. Appreciate the tip though, we like the grease idea, which may helping to seal as well. I’m having trouble compressing the piston. I bought the specific tool and tried to. The piston looked to just be spinning in place and not compressing in. Any tips?
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 4 дня назад
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your VW Dustin. The rear calipers on the B7 Passat are the twist back style which need to be pressed in while rotating. It is important that the two teeth are engaged in the piston and there is pressure being applied while turning. If you are rotating without pressing, the piston will not be pushed in and it could actually damage the piston seal. Good luck on your VW project, let us know how it goes. Cheers!

Why wouldn't you take the oil pan off in the first place and clean it up 😂
@BradleysGarage
@BradleysGarage 4 дня назад
Thanks for the comments Brian, looking back we probably should have just removed the oil pan when we first took off the valve cover. After seeing that much sludge on the top, it was inevitable the pan was just as bad. We were hoping the Liqui-Moly flush would break that down some but I think it's just too much to ask of any product. We did a little diesel flush (off camera) with the oil pan off to wash out any debris in the tight areas of the engine and holes. That produced quite a bit of particles so we feel pretty good that the internals are clean at this point. I’ve never had an issue with quick lube places, ever. I don’t have time or knowledge or the stupid special tool you need to change oil on my car. I do check the dipstick and have a trusted mechanic that sees the car for other things. I Even like the well named “discount tire” place that does it cheaper than anyone else. Like. It’s smooth. Never had an issue. But I’m not an idiot, I ask questions and act like I know what them mfs are telling me. You always change oil every 5k even if your manufacturer claims 10k. If I have the money I like to do my oil right when my car first dings at me which is I believe 4,500k. I have a 2010 Camry , lots of these cars burn hella oil but my car only burns 1 quart every5k miles with it’s nothing added in between.

@BradleysGarage 4 дня назад
We did a little diesel flush (off camera) with the oil pan off to wash out any debris in the tight areas of the engine and holes. That produced quite a bit of particles so we feel pretty good that the internals are clean at this point. There are some people that are comfortable replacing the oil with diesel fuel but we decided not to experiment with that. Everybody has there own way of doing things. Right or wrong, I would just change the oil and never, ever flush. In my experience, once the stuff starts to break loose, it will eventually plug the sump, it will lose oil pressure and lock up the engine. Even with removing the pan, you can't get to it all.

Well, it's probably his first car and I guess no one told him about car maintenance. Can't really blame the guy if he didn't know better. At least he took it to you when told to at Jiffy Lube and I'm sure he'll maintain it properly from now on. When I took my driving classes decades ago, the instructor actually taught me all about car maintenance while I drove slowly through the course. I think we had about 10 hours of one-on-one classes in the car so there was a lot of time to chat. On the other hand, my motorcycle driving instructor didn't tell me anything. Because he doesn't sit pillion while you ride so there's no opportunity to chat 😂. So I ended up riding a 2-stroke bike without putting in 2T oil for a year before a friend noticed and taught me about it.

I don't keep a log of oil changes. When it ticks over to the next 10,000 km I send it for an oil change, and a cvtf change on every multiple of 30,000 km. Right now it's showing 392,000 km so the next change at 400k will include aircond compressor (every 50k), spark plugs+radiator+brake fluid (every 100k). It's just easier to remember multiples of 10k distance than being so exact that you lost track. At most you go over or under 1k.

Thanks for the comments, it sounds like you have been diligent on the maintenance and it shows in your mileage. What type of vehicle are you referring to? We posted the 3k mile update video if you haven’t checked it out yet - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QrJ0B-KXTw0.html Cheers!

@@BradleysGarage Mine is a 2014 Honda City 1.5 CVT. I just tell myself frequent service is a lot cheaper than a new engine. So far no issues besides wear and tear stuff like absorbers, battery, tires. I've checked a few times just before service and the engine doesn't even burn oil. Dip stick level remains at the full mark. And I suddenly realized 10k intervals works for me because we use metric units. Having to remember multiples of 8k miles would be a pretty tough.

I don’t trust those old school torque wrench

Thanks for the comments, those have been around for a hundred years now. The issue is the new digital styles don't typically go down to those low values. We only use the beam-style for very low torque settings. Cheers!

We like the fact that he got out here and tried to learn some basic automotive skills. Hopefully some of that knowledge will hang out in his Twitch brain. Cheers!

Had he been using the recommended DEXOS oil?

Not sure what type of oil Jiffy Lube uses, since we would never visit there. He has been going there since he purchased the car 30k miles ago. I'm sure the cheap oil changes at Jiffy Lube did not help the situation. Hopefully we have done enough to salvage the motor. Thanks for the comments, appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
