And doo to lak of test equipment's is just the voltages are aligned correctly ( according to the service manual ) i managed to get all the filters and the 2 meter band converter . hi Rob pretty nice receiver, I like mine a lot, too. 😇 Is your mentioned 4kHz IF filter in your rig the one from INRAD? What is your cascaded filter chain: the old simple broad 6kHz leaved in >>> next the 4kHz x-tal INRAD >>> next the 2,4kHz ? Or have you swapped one-to-one the simple broad filter with the x-tal 4kHz one? (there is no picture with the new AM Filter inside) 73
@SSN515
@SSN515 Месяц назад
He did a 4 or 5 part series on youtube when he reconditioned his rig a few years back. He swapped out the original plug in 6kHz with a 4 kHz plug in from Inrad. When I did mine, I put in the better 6kHz plug in from Kenwood, removed the SSB filter from it's position and relocated it to the "Narrow" SSB pad, and put the 4 kHz Inrad solder- in filter on the now empty SSB pad, and installed a Kenwood CW filter on it's dedicated pad.
@RobVK3BVW
@RobVK3BVW Месяц назад
As @SSN515, I took out the old 6kHz plug-in and put the 4kHz in its place. Simple job. There are multiple combinations that can be used here. Thanks for checking out the video.

@@SSN515 Thank you for your comprehensive answere. 😎 My Kenny was cannibalized and the filter robbed by the preowner. There was only the bad AM Filter left. I found one and put in the better YK-88A1 (6 kHz) AM filter, followed by an 4kHz, followed by an wide SSB filter (which I had as a spare part for my Kenny R820), followed by a narrow SSB filter which I found o eBay. It's a pretty good DX rig. Fantastic audio with the cascaded 6 + 4 kHz filters in AM.
@RobVK3BVW
@RobVK3BVW Месяц назад
@@nixraff7802 OK. I threw away the original 6 kHz filter when I found the 4 kHz plug-in filter worked so well. Some guys will prefer the better 6 kHz filter for listening, I found the 4 kHz filter worked for for me. It's personal preference. Good luck with your receiver.

As a kid growing up I always listened to R.Australia in the UK. I was so happy to get a radio station from so far away. It’s such a shame SW is now dominated by certain countries and certain types of broadcasters with an ‘agenda’. I’ve been looking into privately run SW and MW stations here to see what I could create.

G'day Brendan! Great to hear from you! Thanks for the comment. I've never had a Barlow Wadley, so I can't comment on that. You don't see too many of them around here these days, do you? Re. the TS-440 and R-5000, I had an article on the 5000 published in Feb issue of The Spectrum Monitor magazine, and part of the article covered the differences between the 440 and the 5000. Hi Rob .. I noticed where you had the antenna mounted seemed reasonably close to metal roofing and gutters .. how far is the antenna from these ? I am looking at roof mounting mine and would use a 3 meter mast so I am hoping that would be far enough away from the roof sheeting.
@RobVK3BVW
@RobVK3BVW 4 месяца назад
Hi Richard. The base of the antenna (below the red choke winding) is just under 1 meter away from the steel roofline. I have noticed no effect of the roof on the antenna. In fact, before it went up to its current location, I tested the antenna for about three weeks on a large tripod (old PA speaker stand) at about 2.5 m off the ground. I got the same SWR readings at ground level as I did when placed above the roof - which I was very pleased about. I suspect that because the antenna is center-fed, it acts independently of objects below it. Thanks for checking out the video.

Thanks for this video Rob! I'm running a Yaesu FT-991a and was trying to use all the 'online' advice about keeping the ALC as low as possible and couldn't seem to get much power output. After talking with Yaesu technical support they mentioned as you did that on their radios you do need some ALC present on the meter. I'm going to try some of the other tips you mentioned as well...Thanks again for the great vid! 73, Corey KD0SAS

Hi Corey. Thanks for your feedback and comments. Much appreciated. FT8 is such a great mode for those of us without "super stations" running multi-band beams on towers at 100 feet, etc. Although the video is more than four years old now, I think I'm pretty happy with the advice there. Although I don't seem to need the notch filter tip - I suspect that may be of more help to those with many other hams living in close proximity. Down here in the lower southeastern part of Australia, there are not many local hams and the population is more spread out. If you hear/see me on the air, please give me a call! I believe the service that followed English in your recording is actually Mongolian 🤨 Nevertheless, good catch! VOM is very difficult to catch in Europe, even in Asia in fact. Their afternoon broadcasts on 12015 kHz always collide with Voice of Korea, including 1430z English, announced as beaming Europe, I'm sure it's not! 😆 At least their off-frequenciness helps spot them if you look closer to 12015 kHz on an SDR... but that's all I can do with them 🙁
@RobVK3BVW
@RobVK3BVW 6 месяцев назад
Whoops! You are absolutely correct! Thank you. I knew that! I have no idea why I wrote Mandarin! Yes, VoM is difficult here for much of the time. It seems that propagation needs to be just right between Ulaanbaatar and Mount Evelyn to really achieve good reception. Coupled with the hummy transmitter and the somewhat muffled audio at times, it's a challenge. Cheers, Arnie - Rob VK3BVW

Why do some broadcast stations use odd frequencies like that?
@RobVK3BVW
@RobVK3BVW 6 месяцев назад
Good question! This station is registered to operate on 12085 kHz. But for years, it has been on the low side of this frequency. It could possibly be a fault in the transmitter that cannot be fixed (spare parts can be hard to obtain for some older shortwave transmitters), or the transmitter has some other issue. The background hum we hear throughout this video is another of this transmitter's faults. Perhaps for some stations, it's a case of "near enough is good enough"! :-) As our radios have become more advanced, frequency readout is more accurate. So we see off-frequency operation more commonly these days. Thanks for the question, Nathan. - Rob VK3BVW
