Hi friends! We are Alex and Katie! Welcome aboard our sailboat, ZIGZAG, a 9-meter Polynesian-inspired double canoe designed by James Wharram. Join us as we share the incredible journey that began four years ago in my parent’s driveway-a dream to build a seaworthy vessel for global exploration.
ZIGZAG, a beautifully crafted wood and fiberglass double canoe, embodies simplicity and adventure, offering a unique sailing experience.

You guys are awesome and what a beautiful boat its is exceptional. Its so nice to see a young couple like you work together with such charming personalities, its very entertaining.
Honestly we prefer the wide open cockpit. And we have good ideas for integrating the live edge slabs as shelves inside the hull. Nothing with be wasted.
Thats a really good how to, for tensioning the beam lashings on a wharram. Dogs be like mom why you remove all our added fur and fug it takes ages to get it that good 😂 Hope Mark Wildings watching he also needs to tension his dynema Rigging beam and deck lashings 👍🏼 Do you think you would ever go for a larger Wharram.. as a repair or build 🧙🏼♂️🇬🇧 If you use a wax like candle wax of beeswax in and on those squeeky points it will reduce the noise through rubbing..as well as keep the water and termites out. In the UK The RN used to grow Hornbeam for high load blocks and structural parts . Epping forest is famous for its Hornbeam stands.. Elm was used for water immersed parts.
We actually saw the video of him doing the lashing. I thought it was loose when I saw that. We would certainly want a bigger wharram but that takes time. I have this crazy idea of building a 63!
It is a 9.9 Tohastu! Which comes stock with a propeller for a dinghy. We’ve had this for more than six months and now have decided to get the biggest propeller we can fit on there. Which is a 10x7 four blade and we will see how that goes
@@ZigZagSailing_113 I mean that a capital lump sum of 150k at an interest rate of 5% per annum produces half the annual income (IE per person) to meet your expenses, but then you also need to buy the boat, so how much do you need in capital to buy the boat? (GBP not USD)
@@paulsteventon8315 we built our boat, we are only factoring in what came out of our saving account for the month of August not the start up. But we do not have insurance or mooring fees or marina fees, what we spend on boat maintenance isn’t ALWAYS in the $400 range but it was in August
@@ZigZagSailing_113 wow, that it skilful. I also watch sv Delos, who are building an aluminium catamaran in Australia. I was trying to work out the overall costs. Thanks for sharing your adventures with me xxx
Grocery costs depend on location. Can be double or triple the cost sometimes. It's annoying, but it's the reality, and if their transportation cost is $0, they're limited to areas fairly close to where they're moored. Ports of call tend to inflate groceries also.
"Hi! I'm from Argentina, and this year we finally have Starlink. However, the Starlink Mini isn't available in the market yet. I was thinking of buying it anyway in the States. Since it works in Martinique, I thought it should work in Argentina too. Do I need to use a USA credit card to buy the mobile regional plan? I'm asking because maybe it wouldn't work at home just because my bank account isn't from the USA. I don't know what would stop it from working. Cheers.
If you are in the states buying they can’t stop you what so ever, it’s a good idea! Definitely be cautious because once you connect, the Starlink router does use your location. What we did to avoid being cancelled by Starlink (in Grenada where we currently are) we are using a VPN which is a way to change your location when using the internet 🛜
hello y'all! I really love your videos. You continue to inspire me as I tackle other challenges before I rebuild my own Tiki 30. 1. I noticed that going up wind hobby horsing is an issue that you mention. I'm wondering what gear/ballast you keep under the bunks, midships. Others have noted our T30's are weight/balance sensitive. 2. How do you view the power of your 9.9hp 4 stroke? I'm going to repower my boat (it has a 20hp that's a real pig). Do you feel a 6hp would be too underpowered for the type of motor sailing you do? I'm looking to shave some pounds if I can. Thanks and safe passages, Ben
Six horse would be under power. If you want to save weight try to find a 9.9 two stroke. That’s significantly lighter than the four stroke fuel injected that we have. We also just purchased a 10x7 four blade prop made for pushing heavy load. We will see how much that helps.
For the pitching we decided it would be a better balance to construct a fore deck instead of trampoline. Adding more weight up front to hopefully cut down on the pitching moment
We want to wait until we go to the Bahamas this winter to beach her, as we don’t know the Grenada area well enough, also I think it’s frowned upon to intentional beach your boat long term in most islands. (if there is sea turtle grass/coral reefs ect… that we could be disturbing if we were to beach here) I am excited to beach, hopefully we can get a drone by then to take some epic shots!
Back in March I dropped anchor in Fish Bay to visit a friend, Dylan, he pointed out your boat to me. I saw Zig Zag in Woburn Bay last week. I knew I had seen her before but I stumbled on your video yesterday and remembered Dylan called your boat Zig Zag
@@ZigZagSailing_113 I had a new to me sail sent to Dylans place in the USVI, I am on a mooring in Saga Cove now till the end of the month. My boats name is Venture, my name is Jay, I’m from Canada. Would love to hear more of your story. I know Dylan had a bower boat thar was moored close to yours in Fish Bay, his house was up the hill where you were moored.
I don't think he's taken a step back to that engine well. I've seen those...with like wood board reinforced on the sides, but it'll rip right thru that thin layer.
Great video! We are presently in Curacao, arguably the best hurricane hole in the Caribbean if you change your mind. By the way, Donald Trump is running political ads, seeking donations on your channel.
Right on! That’s quite the passage ! Not sure we are ready for the passage to curaçao. Maybe after another year of sailing and getting used to our boat
Great video. I love how you've painted your Tiki under every hatch cover theres a piece of art. Umm standing in dog shit is never good, standing in dog shit bare foot is at a whole different level I feel your pain. But as you pointed out dogs can be a chore at times but they make up for it with the Joy they bring that far outweighs the chores. ❤
There’s pitching while going up wind and if the waves are tall we definitely get sprayed but in the Caribbean it’s not a huge deal- the cold Atlantic would be a different story!
I really like your channel... It's quite a change to see people sailing on a budget and doing well without the luxuries of million dollar boats... The Wharram Tiki design is so robust, I miss mine...
For us it’s kind of like an experiment about how little we actually need. Water for example, we use 25 gallons in like three weeks! Whereas someone else might use that much per day.
Hey there neighbours! Great video. The real life. And yeah, rounding the FDF to Le Marin can sometimes have quite the current!!! I’m happy to see it wasn’t only us that turned a Three Hour Tour into a full day sail! 😂
