Lots of valid points and reminder of plenty of my mistakes. $40k in CC debt, living paycheck to paycheck with 2 car payments and mortgage. Turned it around even after selling a house owned and upgraded over 17 years during the 2008 economic crisis for the same price we bought it for. Retired at 46 and now 100% debt free by thinking and acting better not winning the lottery.

That’s a great mix and very similar to mine. SCHG has been a real diamond over the last 15 yrs for me and I predict no changes. SCHX very similar with a little more dividends. Good luck spending all that money!
@AnkurYo
@AnkurYo 8 дней назад
The first day SCHD is positive in your IRA, sell it and focus on growth stocks. SCHD is a great retirement fund once you have a lot of cash. It's what an annuity should be. Pay you consistently yet doesn't F you in so many ways like the annuity... 50 SCHD, 25 JEPI (less year over year growth but pays out much more to increase your income), 25% rock solid single companies paying consistently monthly or quarterly. Earns you income, and you don't touch much. Dividends don't get you to the finish line fast enough, they ARE the finish line.

Just like most people keeping their finances private, the same goes with planning inheritances. No one wants to be perceived as a greedy vulture, especially when a loved one is ailing in health. It is so important to plan for this possibility to minimize lifetime taxes. While it is uncomfortable, you should discuss and plan for these possibilities so you make other long term decisions. I inherited a large IRA but had already locked in deferred compensation payments over the same 10 year period. This locked me out of tax favorable Roth Conversions. I had to drastically change the plan to adjust.

While I appreciate the company 401k and limiting starting matching to get the employee to save more to get the match helps the employee in the long term, it is also a scheme for them to reduce their contributions for the employee. They use to match $ for $ on the first 6%of the Salary contributed, they are hard pressed to contribute 3% of the employee’s salary. Benefits keep shrinking and the amount of benefits being taken out of the employees pay check is increasing at a higher rate than inflation (healthcare insurance). Not good. Hopefully employees chose their employer wisely. 😢

The Mega Backdoor Roth strategy allows high-income individuals to contribute significant funds to a Roth IRA, bypassing income limits, by utilizing after-tax 401(k) or 403(b) contributions and subsequently converting them to Roth IRA assets, providing tax-free growth and withdrawals in retirement.
@Tylerjames-v7m
@Tylerjames-v7m 25 дней назад
That’s a great point. The Mega Backdoor Roth strategy is a game-changer for high-income earners. By leveraging after-tax 401(k) or 403(b) contributions and converting them to Roth IRA assets, individuals can bypass income limits and accumulate significant tax-free retirement savings.
@Martin-cb7gk

It’s amazing how much you can contribute to a Roth IRA without being phased out. Typically, Roth IRA contributions are limited to $6,000 annually and phase out limits apply for high-income earners.

@dhammer6715
@dhammer6715 26 дней назад
As for the mega back door Roth, if you contribute more than allowed to your Roth401k, do the excess after tax contributions become eligible to be rolled over into a Roth IRA? Even if the plan doesn’t allow for separate after tax contributions? Of course the plan allows for in service withdrawals and rollovers.
@dhammer6715
@dhammer6715 26 дней назад
As for the back door Roth, if you have a traditional IRA with say $500k, your income is over the limit, still employed with a 401k growing, can you rollover all 500k to the 401k? If yes, can you then fully fund the full after tax contributions to the empty IRA and the instantly roll it over to your Roth IRA?

Yes you might say that but More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire without any investment. Retirement becomes truly fulfilling when you possess two essential elements: financial resources and a meaningful purpose in life. Make prudent investment choices to secure good returns and ensure a comfortable retirement. .

I have been critical of advisors and others on you tube, including Ed, who take a strategy that would be good for a minority (for example Roth conversions which require a seven figure IRA for RMDs to get above the standard deduction) and make blanket statements saying they are good for everyone. With that said, I just read Ed’s new book cover to cover in one sitting. It is an excellent book and much more balanced than I expected, very logical with none of the corny catch phrases. As a knowledgeable investor I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of real nuggets, particularly as it relates to life insurance, beneficiaries, and estate tax. Even the Roth conversion section, although basic, was well done. I highly recommend the book.

A problem with conversions I ran across I ran I've never seen mentioned in these presentations to WAIT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE IN THE YEAR to convert. In 2019 i started converting my IRA account with the goal of holding my tax rate @ 12% making the contribution in October. Unfortunately, i had 2 December income "windfalls" pushing my rates close to the 24% bracket increasing my total tax liability over $8000 . Having learned that lesson, in 2023 I benefited from an inverse situation. Costs from a Christmas plumbing surprise at a rental property reduced my income to a point where even with my SS, which i only began taking in the last 3 months of the year, left me with a Zero fed income tax rate, since i had no conversions left to make. The net result, over the 4 yrs 2019-2023, was a average tax rate of 11.5%. Had i not missed on the first year, it likely could have been between 8 & 10%.

Problem is that for each year in the future you run numbers the less correct those numbers will be. Adding the fact that half the inputs are pure guesses (even by a CPA), you may be as accurate just running a spreadsheet on your own. How long will i live, what will the market rate be year over year, what will tax rates be, what if i invest the cash from the taxes i would pay. Almost every inout past next year is a guess. I can be wrong for free no matter how complicated we make the process seem. Been running my own numbers for the past 30 years and looking back i have been pretty spot on. Giving someone 30,000 a year to make guesses, I can make myself just doesn't make sense.

Retired since 2018. I'm spending more money now, while my dollars are actually worth something.
