Thank you. That was a very enjoyable and informative video.😊 (subscribed) The producers of this video did a great service to those of us who love the lake and to those who want to learn more about Cayuga Lake.👍
😮 What a joyous song! Wonderful singing, music, photography, video, and of course Buttermilk Falls Park setting. Becca was amazing. I'm sorry I never met her. Heartfelt sympathy to all of her community.
Cottonwood, oaks, pines, hickory, sugar maple, hemlock, cherry, fruitwoods---love the trees and lumber.I lived in King Ferry (1964-1974)directly across from the King Ferry Hotel at Rte 90 and 34B.Lee Coon bought that Hotel, then Henry Parmeter, then Miller Family.
Cool how you point out a lot of the geographic interest points off the lake... the nature is cool in tjis area... too bad the town and all its trash are ruining everything... im glad i dont have to live or work there any more.. farm market is always over crowded when ive visited...
Very informative. I am from Watkins Glen originally, having grown up right near the cemetery where we could walk through to the gorge. Still fascinated by its beauty and thrilled to be learning more of its history. Thank you for sharing this information!
I had a small farm 20mi away and visited often in the early 1980's. I used to love watching the lake trout swarming in the pool 300' below. Sadly, human overpopulation has made the Ithica area far too crowded for visits today. Stress R Us
I love it up here! It is too bad that the taxes in New York state are so high! Between the taxes and the money it requires to heat buildings in the winter it is difficult to persuade industries with decent-paying jobs to move into state. Not to mention the cold and snow ..12+ feet/year, Syracuse, somewhat less in Ithaca (the lake also somewhat moderates the temperature around it )
2015 was cold enough but it was too windy. It wasn't a natural local cold it was a jet stream polar vortex dip wind driven cold which although it feels colder may makes the water less likely to freeze, but probably lowers the overall water volume temp more.
Why is this called "Frowning Cliff"? What is the origin of the word choice for the word "Frown"? Was it in regards to geographic rock formation or is there symbolism? Thank you!
We just came back from a trip to the Ithaca area. Thank you for this informative video. I learned so much about the geology and history of the lake. Wish I had watched your video before the trip.
A very nice history talk by Peter Jemison. However - at approx. 12:40 - when he talks about the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign of 1779 - he leaves out one very important fact! The reason Geo. Washigton sent an army of 5,000 men - huge at that time in the Revolutionary War - to destroy the Seneca was *IN RETALIATION* for the slaughter of innocents at the Cherry Valley (NY) Massacre. The Seneca were known as fierce warriors but at Cherry Valley they killed innocent women and children. This was just one of other similar British-Iroquois raids on American settlements. But this massacre forced Washington to protect the frontier from then Seneca savagery. And it led to the destruction of the Seneca Nation. (Just Google Cherry Valley Massacre).
New York State is absolutely stunning. We have been there several times but this time we are staying for a week to see and go to wineries ,waterfalls, organic farms, boat tours and whatever else we can explore.
Academic snobs you just had to put in your political view on atomic bomb there are a lot of people walking the earth thanks to the bomb there fathers would have never survived and had children that are now coming to the end of there lives mary's true self came thru when saying common laborer the inflection gave her away changed my mind not spending all eternity in snob land you are more than likely the people who spit on me when i came home from war
I grew up in Ithaca in the 1960s through the 1970s, graduating high school there in 1982! I remember when Stewart Park has a toy train ride for kids and there was a concession stand with snacks and a few other playground rides as well as even a merry go round. Back through the 1960s and early 1970s there was a small zoo in the park also! The zoo had monkeys, a pair of peacocks and other animals, nearest the shore though there was a large duck pond that was beside the Fall Creek Inlet next to the ground keepers building. Also the wooded area to the left of the main entrance is the bird sanctuary that was for a long time used as part of the movie studio as well. Other facts about Ithaca is now mostly forgotten but a number of movies WERE FILMED IN ITHACA on location even after the original movie studio vanished!! In fact one of these movies was The Three Stooges Meet Hercules which was filmed on location in Ithaca at the Clinton Drug Store (now CVS). And the Bird Sanctuary doubled as a "jungle" for the early Tarzan serial movies as well in the 1940s!! Further unlisted film credits also include that a few of the Our Gang/ Little Rascals episodes were even shot on location in Ithaca NY! And while that isn't the "only claim to fame" for Ithaca NY, as there are other historical facts about the town as well that is seldom known today in 2020!! For example the OLDEST KNOWN advertisement for an "ice cream sundae" is actually from Ithaca NY, and the company known as Emerson Power Transmissions was originally the home of Borg Warner which back then was the corporate headquarters for the company. While this you might find less interesting, what you fail to understand is that Borg Warner worked with Otis Elevator making chain and other products for elevators, as well as many of the chain products used by a large number of other manufacturers like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and the list of parts Borg Warner produced only goes on from there. Cayuga Lake was also one of the testing grounds for the iron clad battleship that USS Merrimack which (iron clad of the North) used to defeat the south in the Civil War....ending slavery!

WHY speak of native tribes in the past tense!? The cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora still exist, the settlers just stole their land!
Fact check These were my people. I still live on this lane . They stole our Apple orchards, Cornfields.. And livestock.. Cornell University is built on my pupils burial grounds As an insult. Still to this day Cornell University controls are Apple orchards and cornfields doing experiments.. exterminated Us because we were too dark are woman were very beautiful so they Slaughtered the men and boys And sold off the woman. That's why they skip around The massacre.
Tony, you are the man. I must not have had your channel subscription selected to "show all alerts" for getting notifications every time you upload a video so I get a notification, I now have that selected so I get to see all your videos after upload. keep hiking/ exploring/ uploading. I am still trying to forge this path in my life where I regularly get outdoors, I need to just do it, life is to short, thanks for the inspiration
Tony, your usual fine work. Everyone that knows and loves Watkins, and especially those who only get to visit occasionally, should take this home with them.
I knew a family when growing up in Trumansburg that had a wonderful tradition of a yearly family picnic on every New Year's Day. Great people, I hope the tradition still goes on, at least with their decendants. Now about Ichabod, a truly wise man, somewhat familiar though seemingly a bit backward... But Y not!
Hey, would you happen to have an unedited version of this lecture? I would love to have a copy of it for my archives. I am Mel's son, and it would mean a lot.
Ithaca Made Movies Thanks. It came out a little rough in the studio because I dealing with some technical problems right up until we recorded. Thanks for all your help!!
I often see several named varieties for sale in the local nurseries. You shouldn't plant, but nurseries can sell plenty. Nice laws in NYS. We have one or two here. Have to get back to dig out. The yellow is used for dye, but also contains berberine a natural antibiotic. Grew up landscaping in Westchester County where there were too many. Ouch.
Tony, Thought you would be interested in this paper and the implications for the County forest land in Newfield. Let's talk. There are sites in Newfield that are already being managed for old-growth features. There are more sites that are being considered for this type of management. This forest land is some of the most degraded lands in the county. Naturally, the soils were some of the worst-please read soils surveys. "Although new old-growth forests cannot be created, the opportunity exists to restore old-growth characteristics in our current forests." Restoring Old-Growth Characteristics extension.unh.edu/resources/files/Resource000429_Rep451.pdf
BTW Seventy-six percent of New York’s forests are privately owned (14.0 million acres.) An initiative of the New York Forest Owners Assoc. www.nyfoa.org/initiatives/restore-new-york-woodlands
