What a seriously Ugly-ass City. There is literally nothing aspirational looking about this video. They buildings are blocky, utilitarian hell-scapes, the likes of which have been tried (and failed) the world over. Auckland doesn't need a Thamesmead. It needs a New Alamein. With parks. Recreation. Access to the the Sea. Attractions. Activities. Getting people closer to the harbour. Engaging with a lifestyle. (ie: Actual reasons people would *want* to live there, over & above 'its close to work / transport links) Otherwise, you've simply vandalised a pristine piece of coastline & countryside. Replacing it with a quickly impoverished Ghetto, built my committee.
A lot of unproductive political waffle from Megan Woods. It has been clear for a very long time that there is the shortage of available houses. AND still, there is no government effort to create a supply-line of new houses. The Government very quickly rid themselves of Kiwi-build.
I'm honestly not on board with the idea of building a satellite city on some of New Zealand's best soil and horticultural land (IMO Pukekohe is already eating up valuable fields with its sprawl of big suburban houses). Greater Auckland also points out the risk of a project like this turning into one of China's "ghost cities". If you ask me, NZ should focus on intensifying in existing suburbs in the European style - subdivide empty lots, replace some of the detached single houses with good quality terraces and apartments a la Hobsonville Point - not building more houses out on the edges of the city where car dependancy is enforced. Residential development out of city should take place in the towns along the Waikato River and the railway to Hamilton. There could be a network of English-style villages at Te Kauwhata, Huntly, Meremere; around railway stations with quick commute times by high speed trains to both Auckland and Hamilton.
The soils between Paerata and Karaka North are not highly productive soils. In fact this proposal is designed to avoid Pukekohe's quality soil that the current development plan is steadily consuming.
It wont cost anything when it’s able to increase gdp effeciency by 2bil pa and takes taxes. It will actually fund further urban areas and reclaim previous poor zoning choices
This is idiotic, and thank god this idea never really saw the light of day. Who on earth thinks it's a good idea to simply build a city next to a city? Further to this, Auckland is only a city of 1.7m people, they simply need to fix the existing network of which is happening
