Resistant to pesticides, but not oxygen deprivation. So, they float. My late father in law poured gasoline on their nest, and it worked. The heavy vapors displaced oxygen fast with poisonous gases. I don't recommend this method. Idea that will also snuff out their oxygen, but it's not as toxic. A means similar to the containment used with nuclear waste materials be used. Pour a blob of concrete to cover 2x to 3x the diameter of the nest. While it is curing, stick a couple of steel grabber loops in for when you come get the dead nest next year. As for what to do with the concrete... um... it's a bit easier to deal with than fire ants? It's also not a fire hazard.

If they could be stopped, then they would've been stopped already. All you can do is mitigate the impact, but once they're there then that's where they'll remain while they also continue to expand as best they can.

I was wondering if you’ve heard of tawny ants, also called crazy ants by a lot of us in Georgia ? I’ve lived in Georgia for a majority of my life and I think they are worse than fire ants. They don’t sting you but they are attracted to electronics and they will destroy a vehicle and have even been blamed for house fires. I bought a new truck and three days later I saw a few running around on the dashboard. I looked under the small rubber mat in the back and there was a nest with thousands of ants and eggs. From the research I did, they don’t make a mound. They travel constantly so it’s really hard to get control of them. There is too much to post about them but I would recommend looking them up on the internet and finding their area of operations lol. Just a small example of what they do, it had just finished raining and I noticed something dark hanging off a limb of a tree branch above my truck. When I looked closer, it was these ants. They had climbed up a tree to get away from the water and were streaming down onto my vehicle, and going under the hood of my truck. I spent the next two days treating my truck to get rid of them. I call the gypsie ants because they’re always on the move.

Weird that nobody seems to know why they chew on wires. It seems pretty obvious they're attracted to the same chemicals that mice, rats, and other rodents are. It's the plastic wire insulation and anywhere else that plastic residue might be.

Wakooshi nests shouldn't be under the 3d printed section, they are effectively gypsum nests in a 3d printed shell. The ants only interact with the gypsum material when in the nest portion. And gypsum/plaster nests are by FAR the best nest type, objectively. Acrylic and ytong are both pretty terrible. Acrylic has horrible moisture properties and grip for the ants, making it entirely unusable for majority of species that require anything past mediocre care. Ytong has bad moisture retention and is really brittle and easy for ants to dig through, given long enough Wood nests are decent for some arboreal or dry-loving species, but still kinda has the same problem as acrylic. Because the material itself can't absorb water well, it has bad moisture gradients and some species can still dig through. 'True' 3d printed nests are effectively just acrylic, so still bad. Gypsum or plaster are by far the best for practically any species. Its ability to soak in water while also retaining its strength makes it like ytong but better in every way. I'd say the only drawback of it compared to ytong is its difficulty to drill or carve into, but that can easily be solved by just pouring molds rather than carving. It looks way better, you can do sand coating for more grip and aesthetics, you can dye it, there are more methods of hydration (water tower, direct hydration) allowing you to more easily change the nest depending on species. If you have a dryer species, like one that would usually nest in dry wood, you don't even have to hydrate it and you basically have an acrylic or wood nest. By far the best looking, most functional nest type available. For international nests, wakooshi and other gypsum based nests should be the gold standard. I'm honestly not sure why so many countries still use ytong and acrylic, they're blatantly inferior when compared. In the US, ytong and acrylic has pretty much gone extinct for this reason; everyone uses gypsum/plaster.
@pissantsforlife
@pissantsforlife Месяц назад
True the gypsum nests from wakooshi aren’t actually 3D printed on the inside now that I think of it. Thanks for all your valuable insights on the range of nest type. This video was put out to inform people of all the nest types and some of their properties to hopefully find the best nests for their ants. And yes I agree with your preferred nest types especially the wakooshi ones. Thanks

one tip I find beginners don't realise is that you have to put the cotton far enough in till it is fully wet for the ants to actually drink from it. also the reason why ur dracula died was because they need naturalist setups.
