This was such a sham. Welch seems to have practiced that sob story in the mirror. Fischer WAS indeed part of a communist organization, whether or not he had regrets is irrelevant. He betrayed the country, as some passionate and idealist young men do. The scar is well-deserved. Some people in their youth make mistakes that affect them for the rest of their career, and those are just the realities of life. It isn't the fact that Fischer was a lawyer--it was the fact that the lawyer Welch seems to not understand the dangers of communism when he worked for the Army. Of course Welch defended the young man because Welch's entire career should be investigated and he knows he's been caught red handed.
McCarthy was a fascist demagogue and ham-handed political thug. He never should have been allowed to go this far by taking a transparent witch hunt and show trial to deflect focus away from real issues. My father was in this Brigade and I swear he is in this video at 3.17 !!. He fought at Arnhem and I have his papers and uniform badges. He did not talk about the war much and died when I was young so I never got to talk in depth in later years about Arnhem . I know he was in a Russian concentration camp prior to joining the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade. Thank you so much for this video !

Sadly, today's radicalized Republican Party truly bears the imprint of one Joe McCarthy AND NOT of one Barry Goldwater. Unlike Goldwater, McCarthy championed a political blood-lust that was predicated on these three elements: (1) cultural resentment; (2) scapegoating; and (3) fearmongering. Evidently, Trump truly comes across as a composite of both McCarthy and Adolf Hitler.
