You can watch us explore new places, discover the highs and lows of living aboard in your retirement, tips for places to visit and take part in a culinary adventure. We will be showing you places we visit, talk incessantly about food and give you a feel for life on board when time is no issue. As we are both engineers we try to carry out all maintenance and installation work ourselves so expect quite a bit of this too. We hope you enjoy following our retirement and that it gives you ideas for where to go, what to see and food that can be enjoyed on the way!

Oh what a lovely surprise. Although, as always, your post coincides with my diet :-). Yes kippers and poached eggs are made for each other with a good dollop of marmalade and, perhaps, some granary bread. Another great post, thank you both. Looking forward to the next one.
Hello Both, Just come back from camping & playing music all weekend. It was nice to go out with you for a little sail and a trip around Scarborough, just what was needed. Thank you so much for taking us along. How you fit us all in I just do not know. Oh I remember Scarborough well. 49 years ago my dear wife and I went there on a day trip from York during our honeymoon. It was foggy that day too. Do you think the fog has ever cleared? Spern Point was also vistited several years later. We were so pleased that we had a tiny ridge tent. There were huge winds and little tent just hunkered down. We slept well.
Another delightful episode. You are inspiring me to make a video when we finally set sail... An experiment from last season ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-77A1PXgJ9xg.htmlfeature=shared Sailing across the strait of Georgia, bc Canada in 20 kn gusting to 25 winds..
So good to meet you on youttube. We are David and Darrell on SV Endless Song. a 1985 passport 40. which we are refitting for our retirement attempt at world cruising starting from Vancouver Canada. ... Nice to see folk of similar ages who are off following their dreams and sailing.
We are loving our time on board SV Seagull. We enjoy each day as it comes, we walk lots, explore, relax and love spending time together. Most importantly we only sail when the weather is right. We have learnt to let go of the stresses of normal life. We wish you well.
Very good info! Thank you for sharing… I have the same problem on my sail drive. Can’t haul out now. Do you think o could replace in the water with a compressor?
Glad you found it helpful. There is more on this repair in Ep 37 as well. If your question is about completing this repair underwater then we think this would be extremely difficult. It would be very difficult to ensure you have removed all the oil/seawater from the sail drive. We drain ours from underneath, then flush the remaining oil/seawater mix through with a bit of fresh oil before putting the final oil in. Any seawater remaining in the system could cause a lot of damage. Also the seals can be tricky to get off, using a puller is the best way. We should also say we have no experience of diving. In the end the decision is yours. Let us know how you get on. Good luck with the repair.
We both love cooking. Alan cooks at sea and I cook when we are not on the move. I get sea sick if I spend touch time below. I think the love of cooking comes from our love of food. 🤣
Well that went down nicely with my haggis and sprouts (I understand, weird). Whenever I see a boat for sale on the East coast this is one of the places I think about the others are Lands End and the Bristol Chanel. Thank you both, see you next week.
Also meant to say if you want more up to date information on what we are up to, a taster of things to come. You can follow us on Instagram or Facebook under Sailing Seagull South. 😄
Ah Roscoff, The start and finish of my dear wife and I's cycling adventure. Fruit du mer for tea where much of the food was wandering around our plates. The Roscoff Hotel where we stayed on our first night. Disappointed to find that the French do not heat their croissants. Wonderful coffee. Sat next to a policeman dunking his croissant into his mug of chocolate and off we went out on our World tour of Brittany. For young, poor, working class kids it would be our grand adventure. Stephanie was diagnosed with MS soon afterwards and would never do anything like this again. However, the memory sustained her throughout her life. Thank you xx
So pleased you are enjoying the footage and reliving precious memories. It's been heart warming to read your story and so very special of you to share these memories with us. We too now have fantastic memories of the region. As ever thank you for your comments.
That's great! -- QUESTION -- I've noticed several teachers going around the world on yachts and I want to do this too! Such a perfect job since you get lots of hollidays during the school year, and super high salaries (now over $100k per year in Canada and US - ignore the low start stats - most teachers blow past the start salary very fast) and best thing is the full life-time pension that the public must pay and is guaranteed. I really want to go this road as the public doesn't get that but must pay it. Any tips to max out that pension and get out of teaching as fast as possible. I notice that Jan Socraties was also an "engineer" teacher as was her husband. She too is doing the sailing yacht thing and best part is she gets two pensions now that her husband died (sadly), But you guys can double up, right, once the other passes away? Best thing going as long as the public doesn't wise up to it all.
Teachers do this when retired or work online as they go. No real fast way for people entering teaching now, unless you tutor online and become a digital nomad. New teaching pensions mean you are working until 67. We did it by working hard, living carefully in a small place and paying off the yacht and house early. Lots of money to save and add in to pension. It's true that your spouse gets half your pension if you pass away until they die.b
@@sailingseagullsouth ..interesting.. What government jobs have the best gig going for pensions and benefits and high salary? I heard police can get full pensions and benefits, dental, healthcare, eye care, car insurance, life insurance, and so on after only 20 years in the US. Love how they fool everyone into thinking that police is dangerous work when, in fact, it doesn't even rank in the top 40 dangerous profession - well done indeed! Right now cops cost $188,000.00 per year in California and many make over $200k. Firemen are also a great way to double up. But do you know the best one to go with? I really want to do as little working years and max guaranteed pensions for as long as possible and teaching is very attractive since they get so many months off and all sorts of benefits and the are demanding even more money - most excellent! We must thank your generation for setting all this up but my generation now wants in on this good thing so please help! Washington DC is the highest salary region in the US and in the world because of all of this - outpaces even NYC and London and you can never ever be fired for any reason! So cool! Maybe I should go there as an so-called "illegal" and then get one of those jobs? Super excellent as long as I can get in soon! Love the yacht by the way. That Socrates woman is really cashing in now and living the life and I love your Najad - Well done Jan! Totally want to be her one day but I need direction on how it all works and how to get in.
Hello you two. Ah Dourenez, having crepes on the quay and needing a little extra is something I too have experienced. They aren't like Staffordshire oatcakes. Nice though. My dear wife and I cycled around Brittany many decades ago. The people there appear to embrace life to the full. Must have just been into our early thirties (now 70). Stephanie was fearless, flying down the steep road on her bicycle into Dourenez in the pouring rain. She would have loved to have seen your vblog. Keep doing the food shots, love 'em.
So glad you enjoyed it. Episode 1 is pretty bad but we definitely started to improve after the first few. Thanks for subscribing. It makes our hobby all the more fun.
@@sailingseagullsouth Thank you for answering! I was looking at Trilux 33. Do you put anything on your prop? It’s my first time owning a boat and all new to this.
@@zero_to_sailor We do not put anything on our propellor. We just clean it carefully. Do not use anything to abrasive. A washing up scrubby and a gentle scraper for barnacles. Although we do not get many. Always happy to support other sailors.
Just found your channel. Good fun relaxed style and nice that you don't need clickbait. I did look back to your first episode but cannot find any info on Seagull - haven't binge watched the whole series yet, but could you tell us what she is, why you chose her, maybe even a bit of a tour or walkaround pls? Fair winds 👍
Have fun binge watching, to keep up to date with all our posts be sure to subscribe. We will film an episode all about the boat for you next week and post it in the near future. In the meantime she is a Hanse 411.
Visited Cameret sur mer and Brest in 2011. Our 3 boys were with us. The customs came up right behind us and eyeballed us which made us nervous. Fantastic fireworks at fort Vauban for Bastille Day celebrations
We have been boarded by customs three times now. They look scary but actually have always been efficient and friendly when onboard. We spent this year's Bastille day in Dournenez, and you are so right that the fireworks are fantastic! Thanks for watching and commenting.
The English accent you have is not familiar to me. Could you please tell your story a little slower and louder and more details? I have no idea where on Earth you are. I speak the Texas variety of English.
The skipper is from the south coast of England and I am from the Midlands. Thanks for your feedback. What sort of details would you like us to include? Have you tried watching with subtitles on? Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hi guys, just come across your channel 😊 very informative video 👍 we are planning on doing this trip next year, can I ask what form do we need for checking into France? Looking forward to your journey south 😊
You need to complete a Pre Avis Form. We did ours digitally and emailed it to Roscoff. Lots of information on RYA and Cruising Association (CA) websites. We also have membership of the CA and use to be Captains Mate App. This has links to the relevant forms and lots of useful port information. Have fun!
This episode has me reflecting on how the accidents we have affect our future lives. I think i will be much more cautious when putting a reef in the main sail in future. An instinctive impulse decision resulted in me putting my fingers near the end of the boom to release a trapped reefing line. I did release it but managed to trap my fingers tips instead. It was an extremely painful mistake and one i hope never to repeat. Have you ever had an accident while out sailjng?
So glad you are enjoying it. This particular sail has stayed with me. The dolphins stayed for a long time. This coupled with gentle sailing breezes was pure joy. Thanks for commenting.
