I worry about them restarting the mine, and especially forestry. It would be like the repeating without any lessons learned. But money talks. And the minerals they have on Bougainville are now worth more than ever. I would hate to see what happened in West Papua (especially the Grasberg mine which is right on the side of the Cartensz Pyramid, the highest mountain between the Himalayas and the Andes) happen to Bougainville. Thankfully though the Bougainvillians don't have to worry about Indonesian transmigration programmes.
Thanks for this summary. Why did you leave? I would like to visit to learn about the culture etc. I come from a very Catholic influenced place in India, so am sure I would recognise a lot of the similarities. I am guessing most of the job opportunities would be in retail(cities), education and hospitality? Is there an IT job market?
You're welcome. I lived in Timor-Leste for 6 years, so I was ready for a change. There is a market for IT and project management within the NGO organizations.
Bit disappointed with your Buin documentation.. all I saw was someone fishing!!? My husband was a Patrol Officer n we lived at Boku in 1972 than to Buka..73/74. I would have liked to seen more of the town n what happened since..bit sad n disappointed. Thanks anyway for sharing..nice fish!!!
You said a can of soda is $1/= but your video showed cans of sprite and coke priced between 50 and 60 cents. It would far better to just show the prices given in the supermarket instead of just rattling away the prices quite inaccurately.
Glad you're enjoying my videos 😅 I said a can of soda water was $1-$2 (it varies alot with levels of supply incountry) and showed coke, fanta etc for $0.50-$0.60.
great video man, I truly enjoyed it so much so I'm already planning to go. the thing is its hard to know how to book the flight from bali. how do you do it and how much was it? thanx in advance
Saw my old single accom there C Block 215 and G Block G2. Oh such a sad scene. I can still se Peter "Pockets" Leonard and his charges in the Pool, where he coached the kids in their competition swimming. The Panguna / BCL kids did really well nationally under his guidance. Oh and my B16 truck workshop and the PM Bay which John Brown and I establische the system along with Baden Stewart and etc. That system stayed in place until mine closure. So many happy memories of Bougainville and its people.
I lived and worked there for 6 years until 1988. The first violent act (a power pylon destroyed) took place It still amazes me how no-one within BCL management saw this coming. Asleep at the wheel!!!! Or too busy enjoying the many benefits and too complacent.
That definitely looks like crocodile (and mosquito) territory. When living on Bougainville we were advised to always stay away from river estuaries or swampy areas like that. You never know where they are stalking. The rule is that you have 20 mins if a crocodile has spotted you in the area. The guide seems very much at ease though!
Just like , north davao mining corporation, in philippines. 30 decades since it close, pretty life in there before, just like city, but now ghost town. If someone come back there ,it will cry.😢
What time of the day did you start hiking? I am thinking doing the the backdoor hiking around 3-4pm from visitor center. Is there a shuttle from visitor center and 4*4 jeep from little Petra at late afternoon?
We drove to the main entrance in the morning, parked the car and caught a shuttle back to Little Petra. We started hiking around 9 o clock before it got too hot and spent the day walking though the city to the main entrance, where we had left the car. I'm not 100% sure about the shuttle from Little Petra in late afternoon though.
