I remember sitting in an old blues club in 1980 listening to a group called Mojo Filter cover this song. Their card said "sometimes the blues can make you feel so good" good times. Dwayne Almond is phenomenal!
Curious, this song is considered "garage rock" by some. The rather dirty sax is reminescent of the Dorsey bros'' big band hit "So Rare" which, I believe, came out 2 years earlier. In any case, a superb jazz rendition.😢
Hendtix on guitar - Hendrix left the band becuase little Richard kept on stringing them on for their pay. Tht's why Hendrix in the "Jimi Hendrix" wouldn't let him back stage.
If anyone from the NY Tri-State area that was a regular attendee of the live music scene may have seen/heard Rat Race Choir do this song. There was a time it was pretty regularly in their rotation. As with most songs they covered, they did an incredibly high-energy version of this song (not that the original wasn't high energy, but Rat Race was almost always more high energy than any studio version of a song). Always loved it. Great song, even Lee's studio version! Love the drums & guitar work and great vocals!
So many images produced by a simple (yet complex) tune. A true masterpiece! One or two listens at a time are not enough to get the full impact. A dark street, a storm on the horizon, a black and white movie with a monster (Wolfman?) running through a cemetery on a foggy night…..
An old friend of mine got the live at the Filmore album when it first came out in 71 we listened to it all the way through and were like damn this changes everything music has suddenly taken a big step forward
