In October of 2019 I found another raptor wandering around the Metroparks here in Cleveland. His name is Joe. Joe is much more of a rural and somewhat more wild raptor than I am. Eventually Joe became my co-host and friend.

I did the tour the day before, waited till the last weekend to see the finished paint, glad the weather was great for the last 2 tour dates. I also went over to take pictures of the JFK before it's gone forever, funny how it didn't seem so big after walking under the New Jersey.
Hmmm. Any reason why the AN/SPY-1 emitter/receiver "plate" is removed from the forward superstructure on the Hue but retained on on the stern superstrucures of the other three?
It's a good question... I would assume it could be used for spare parts for the units still in commission but not many Ticos left and even earlier Burkes have different panels

At 4:40, those are called "Sacrificial anodes". They are made of zinc alloy. Their purpose is to sacrifice themselves and save the metal the ship is made from. They are all bonded with copper (or similar) wires, and sluff off metal at a rate to keep the metal molecules of the ship itself from departing the hull.
The original anodes were made of zinc, because zinc is best for saltwater (the battleship was spending most of its time at sea, of course). The anodes being installed now are made of aluminum, which is better for freshwater. They're bolted directly to small metal posts welded to the outside of the hull. @@JustSomeCanuck Excellent info. Thank you! This conservative in California mammal is an professional engineer with minor in physics. Zinc is preferable in any water. Aluminum is not as preferable because the aluminum oxide is an insulator (a very good one), and greatly reduces the effectiveness of the anodes. Unfortunate they chose to go that route, as it will lead to more metal migration away from the hull. It is certainly less expensive than zinc, but also foolish for a ship of historic significance. There is a reason aluminum anodes last longer...
@@ModelA If that's true, you might want to give the Ryan mammal a phone call before NJ leaves the dry dock! Although it would also mean that the experts the museum consulted recommended the wrong kind of anodes, so...
@@ModelA Zinc is cheaper than aluminum per pound, so not sure why you are saying they went cheaper. I bought one of the zinc anodes they took off, after 30+ years they all look almost new, they had crates of them in the gift shop area. You can still read the stamped writing on them, surface only slightly pitted. They could have bolted those back on if they wanted to go the cheap route. The zinc didn't seem to be doing it's job in the river water, that's why they went with aluminum.
