I'm Joel, and I compose music for video games from the studio in my attic. I've composed for Halo, Mortal Kombat, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gorogoa, The Unfinished Swan, Eastward and a lot more. I'm going to be sharing my knowledge about every aspect of being a composer!
LOL. I was thinking about composer's role in a game project. This video became the last and... everything-connecting missing piece of puzzle! Thank you. Edit: haha you changed music in a right way when you started talking about course :DD
Powerful like the crash of the tide, enlightening like the cloud-breaking sun's rays, it's no disillusion - it's the reality of Joel's tunes ( *thank you* )
I've never heard the original track. Let it remain this way, because the original song will not be able to convey the emotions that Joel conveys in his track
Nice! I got almost identical readings at the Morton Arboretum today in Lisle, IL. 1.25 and 1.6 peaks. I'm interested to understand the 1.25. I'm not convinced they are from the 13 vs. 17, as everywhere I traveled in the Arb, it seemed that the 1.6 was nearby and 1.25 was distant. I could be wrong. The 1.25 reminds me of distant expressway traffic you sometimes hear in the mornings especially during temperature inversions. It sounds low pitched from a relatively great distance, but higher pitched when you're next to the expressway.
I love the Morton Arboretum! These are from just off the North Branch Trail. I found the same thing - it was really tough to get close to the 1.25k sound. This was as close as I could get. I'd try to follow the sound and at some point it sort of just felt like I was moving away from it.
Hi! Could you please release the full version of your song Constellations either here or on platforms like Apple Music? I really, really like it! (^•^)
I care about it, I’m a stranger on the other end of the planet on a subway using RU-vid illegally and English isn’t even my mother tongue, but I look forward to this album. You never know what kind of ripple you are creating in this world.
I hope you are well. Visiting your channel I have seen your all videos and content are very good but your video SEO optimization is not professional. Perhaps you are busy for managing the channel.
Thank you so much for doing these, Joel. Gorogoa was so beautiful, and of course I'm a huuuuge DS fan, the atmosphere in that game is so specific and of course the sound design plays a HUGE part in that.
thank you - that's super nice & meaningful to hear! it's ok with me though. the circle is small but people are already more engaged and positive than i expected! it's super heartwarming
I was one of the lucky few who participated in the first class Joel did, and wow, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Definitely worth your time and money! I learned so much valuable stuff about creating video game music, and Joel is just an insanely talented teacher. 10/10 🙌
This was SO cool to watch!!! If there’s any way you could do a track breakdown of Iron Carbine, that would be amazing. It’s my favorite song on the OST and I probably listen to it AT LEAST once a day. Would love to see more of these videos!!!!!
Seeing/hearing how excited Joel gets to speak about his work now and noticing the fan base growing is undoubtedly awesome. That piece about ping filters!!! Magic Meister Joel went over that in a previous lesson. More deep dive videos like this to breakdown soundtracks would be fantastic. Could a deep dive into The Unfinished Swan 🦢 be possible ? Its score struck so many souls
This is such an amazing track in the game. I love that combination of music and what feels like a soundscape. Makes me feel like I'm in a mine, and brings me back to the wonderful tracks featured in Donkey Kong Country. Thank you for keeping up on these track deep dives! Question: Do you build your palette per track as needed or do you begin composing for a game with a general palette? Question 2: I'd love a deep dive into "To My Knight". It's an incredibly emotional track that gets me every time I hear it, especially after how it plays out in the story of Eastward. Did the story and characters play into the composition of track?
Thank you so much!! I'll take any comparison to DKC haha. My template is a blank slate with a bunch of blank instruments, 2 reverbs and 2 delays. I usually build as I go but if I know of a sound that'll fit, I'll use it!
Re "To My Knight" - yes. I can share more in another video but that track is actually Is Isabel's theme, and is connected both in terms of melody and palette to Alva's theme.
So excited to hear the album Joel! I love the concept of the album, also I think it’s really cool how you managed to make a compilation of music you already made at different times and contexts and turned that into a cool cohesive concept. It’s inspiring!
Thanks so much for leeting us take part on your work process. Very inspiring and interesting. And although we don't know each other personally, it feels like a good friend is showing me something special that he is proud of and appreciates my opinion. Great job Joel, looking forward to hearing your albums!
A double album treat 🎶 *The Darkside* Potential Album Name: Desolation (potential components of joy/hope?) 20 songs, 1 hr. 9 mins. Comments/Notes: With a name like Desolation, there might be those who resonate with the idea of isolation or desperation. But to others, a state of being alone isn't inherently bad. In fact, it's a welcoming prospect to a "clear-mind". This is one of many ways to look at it, but the album name is great. *The Lightside* Delight (could also have a hint of longing or yearning) 21 songs, 1 hr. 24 mins. Comments/Notes: Now this title is going to be interesting to play with. Perhaps the soundtracks that posses a "heavy-tone" and eventually become "lighter" towards the end (sort of like a sad-to-not-so-sad)? Or rather, songs that have small blips of a rising bit every now and again. HotShark (Oh the throwback - IF this doesn't take someone back to the days of "Bangarang", then they probably won't get it). Drum Machine Classic Dance Tracks: 10 808 -----Nice. The 6:29 sound track isn't bad at all - some may find it a little jolting, given the mix and the frequency potency but that uniqueness/quirkiness is what makes it cool! *Do keep posting these Joel! Seeing the process & progress with your work(s) is awesome. I think the building of these albums is as much you sharing about yourself through your music - like you said, it's autobiographical. And it's going to be a fantastic piece.
You are not helping get over my craving of a Super 6 desktop 😭 I love your setup by the way. I wish I had this space for music that I cannot immerse myself into, and also leave completely when I want to get back to other human things. I tend to get too drawn to my computer in my one-room apartment 😰
