So sad 2024 will be Niteworks last year but their music will last forever. Celtic fusion at it's very best. Thankfully saw them at Skye Live and Eden Court Inverness.
Knowing about my great gran and my great great grandparents, Somhairle makes me proud and nauseous at the same time. The didnt emigrate far - Morayshire- but knowing about the suppression of language and traditions and culture it makes me both proud of them and horrified for them at the same time.
Only just started listening to them but what a mix this is! Wish I had stayed and seen them at Phonox in Brixton last Sat 16th Dec (after ALFOS).... Next time!
I guess that those of us who love this music and its places, but whose ancestry may have led to the clearances should apologise. I would. But some forgiveness in the modern age might help all of us move on and enjoy these places without a guilt complex.
It's interesting that Beethoven, Mendelsohn and Schuman all wrote music based on these Scottish Airs, usually for Piano, Violin, Cello, Tenor and Soprano. Even though I play Fiddle, I'd love to hear a Cello in the mix.
So interesting, the musical connections between Ireland & Scotland; the very first tune is structured a lot like the Irish reel “The Hut in the Bog” which is a G minor tune in Ireland. I am specifically thinking of the version recorded by Liz & Yvonne Kane, from Connemara, on their album “Under the Diamond”; unless it’s from “The Well Tempered Bow”, their debut album.. This Scottish tune sounds more major & not as dark, but it has the same structure & certain phrases stand out as an influence, one way or the other.
Im really interested in the 'double-drone' that she uses - does anyone know what this actually is? Is it a modified drone or two certain kind of drones...
On my piano it sounds like Bb and Eb in the bass, the interval of a 4th with Bb on the bottom, Eb on top, like the minor 7th and Minor 3rd of a Cm7th an Octave below middle C, then a C minor Pentatonic melody on Top. These Instruments are so Rich in Harmonics though, that the lower harmonics are mostly felt than heard: there are really an Octave of Eb below the Bb. That's from the Harmonic Series and what my measly ears can hear. The Major sounding tune at 19:07 is cranked up almost to a C & F in the Base like "Coming thru the Rye". So she must have a way to shorten the drones.
That's the worst intro music I've ever heard. Too hokie! Lol. And jigs and reels don't need to be techno'ized. The rest of the 90 minutes was, of course, pure gold, although watching the first act lip sync their own music was kind of a disappointment... Kind of defeats the whole reason why they have "live" in the title... Hmmmmm
