Saw the movie with Mom when I was a little boy. Never forgot the song. Over 70 years have passed and still recall every word of the song. Brings back memories of Mom and my wife. Both now gone.
Thanks for your messages. It's here in part. I will find the other part and post for you to see. Had Gloria's career taken flight, the film would be better known. I love the film as well. I have only one issue with it is they used the title song too many times. Over and over. I think it would have been nice to sing another song in the film as well. Just a thought. yes Gloria was a talent. too bad Gloria did not go futher. I think Warners wanted to make more war films. The war had recently begun. Thanks. so much
Sorry they removed it as well. Loved it. Cried once seeing Titanic, cried twice watching this. Just saw recently and she had a supreme voice as did Kathryn Grayson.
Another one of those socially conscious films that Warner Bros. excelled in making to pay tribute to all who served during WW2. -- The Merchant Marine. God Bless Em all!
Thank You ,Thank you so much. You summed it right up. They were writing history as it wa s happening. Brilliant. The film was released 9 months ater the bombing of Pear Harbor, Since there was n io tv, The studios recreated the Incedent rigt after if happend. They also tempeted to do that with many over war films, ie GOD IS MY COPILOT, EDGE OF DARNESS.
The USAAF provided the 'extras' for the exciting ground/air combat scenes as well as all of the other aircraft in the film. The climactic scenes representing the Battle of the Coral Sea was filmed in the Santa Barbara Channel utilizing a flotilla of 'large' miniature warships built by Warner Bros. Special Effects Dept. That sequence alone cost over $500,000 in 1942 dollars. Filming ended in October, 1942 and was first released in February, 1943. It got good reviews.
One of the finest Hollywood aviation movies produced during the war. Warner Bros. and director Howard Hawks promised historical fact as the basis for its story in exchange for full co-operation from the USAAF. Production began in May, 1942. Drew Army Airfield, Tampa, FL stood in for shots of Hickham Field, Hawaii, Wake Island and Clark Field in the Phillippines. The the 'star' of the film, the B-17C 'Mary Ann' was loaned from the Combat Crew Training Center, Hendrick Field, Sebring FL.
