My name is Rob. I am the Creative Director of Button Press Graphics. A business dedicated to providing clients with custom, bespoke graphics, teaching Inkscape & doing it all for the love of art and creativity.
I am a family man from Oldham, UK and I love to create. This channel is dedicated to teaching you wonderful, creative people how to use the most powerful open-source vector-based graphics program...Inkscape. I have been using this app for a long time and believe it is my responsibility to share the knowledge with new artists. At the end of the day... #ArtistsAreBetterTogether

Thanks John, I really appreciate that. I am also glad that you found it enlightening. I know I have used the Layers & Objects menu in previous videos but I thought it needed a video to itself because it really is used a lot by experienced users & definitely helps. #StayCreative my friend 😁
I often equated the Layers to be the chapters in a book. The objects and shapes to be the pages within the chapters. Coming from a strong CAD background you learn to embrace layers and objects to be a powerful tool which strengthens your design and a VERY NECESSARY step when you need to edit. ---- I also add a layer called, "Color Swatches." This sometimes complicates a drawing, but Parametric Modeling lets you edit upstream and applies changes downstream.
That, my friend, is a very cool analogy. I like that a lot. I know of the method you refer to with the swatches but I do not use it too often & when I do, I tend to use the Template layer to do so. As you clearly know, your skill grows & as it does, the designs become more complex...& more chaotic lol so that is the reason I wanted to do thiss video. Streamlining design processes. It helps massively as I am sure you know. #StayCreative my friend
@@CelticOneDesign I am pretty sure you can. The little arrow next to the snapping button is a drop down menu. I am not certain (without checking) but I think there is. The drop down allows you to individually select what the snapping, snaps to.
@@ButtonPressGraphics nope not yet. I requested it though a month ago if I remember. Snapping features are better in 1.4rc1 compared to 1.3.2 . I use grids for most of my designs and 1.3.2 allowed snapping to "dead zones" if I was not paying attention. Fixed in 1.4rc1.
@@alexsax3759 The offset allows you to increase/decrease the diameter of your selected shape. You can also use the Offset Path Effect which will give you more control over the changes you make. #StayCreative
@@ButtonPressGraphics Not that! In the measurement tool in the tool bar at the end of the row. I realized that when the arrow is pressed, the dimension line appears and the number and offset is how far it is from the line being measured.
@@alexsax3759 Ahhh, yes! I misunderstood. My apologies. The Offset, regardless of the tool, simply offsets the default parameters for your line/shape. If used in conjunction with other modes, you can accurately offset the nodes by specific amounts.
@@154Colin Great question. Typically, features like the measure tool are used by people like architects. Where plans are being created for things that require extreme precision. It is a very handy tool but is underused because for the average user, it isn't needed. #TheMoreYouKnow #StayCreative & #StayCurious my friend 😁
@@ButtonPressGraphics You got more of my attention when you mention architect. I'd like to know more because of the usability for laser cutting. --- This is not necessarily in the wheelhouse of the channel or you professional pursuits, but I feel their are others' that would benefit by you doing more on it.
@@154Colin I completely understand what you are saying & I may well have a look into it. That is a great idea, thank you. Learning is how we improve, after all. In time, if it is something that I can confidently talk about, I can definitely give it a shot. Right now, I am concentrating on another idea but watch this space ;)
@@baggy-nu8uc You are very welcome. I once had the same thought lol. The Align & Distribute menu will do most things but for more precise measurements, the Measure Tool is there for everything else.
@@PortugalCarp Thank you my friend. I love that you tried it yourself with your own little twist. That is truly fantastic 👏 Art is all about looking at other artist's work and trying it for yourself. I started with Marvel & DC personally and learned how to cross-hatch as a result. Keep evolving my friend but most importantly, #StayCreative
It is on my list my friend. My memory is shocking, so I have to write things down. However, doing a video on the measure tool is in the works, sort of lol. Watch this space my friend & #StayCreative
I would be lying if I said I never make mistakes like that because I do...more than I would like to admit lol Regardless, you are learning! That is the main thing. #StayCreative my friend 😁
Hello. I need help. I chose the shape of a square and when I hovered over the canvas, a dot appeared on it indicating the center of the canvas. Also, when I moved an object across the canvas and brought it to the horizontal or vertical center, horizontal or vertical lines appeared on the canvas, also meaning the center. But after the program crashed, this feature disappeared. How do I turn it back on?
Hi Rob Thankyou for your lovely and well structured videos. I have one question on isometric strokes, they seem a bit jaggy, l am sure I watched one of your videos where you showed how to fix it. When you can, can you point me to that video please? Thankyou John
@@johnkaradimas8403 Thank you so much John, I really appreciate the compliment 😊 As for the strokes being "a bit jaggy" lol I think I know exactly what you are referring to. If I am assuming correctly. When the strokes of objects don't line up, although the objects/paths do, this is to do with the stroke style. Within the Fill & Stroke menu, select the Style tab. From there, you will see headings like Width, Dashes, Marker etc. Next to Join, there are 3 types of joining - Bevel, Round & Mitre. Select Round. Depending on the version of Inkscape, you may have a value next to it, this relates to the size of the join. Finally the Cap heading should also set to Round to make it cohesive but the cap only relates to the end of an open stroke path. Hope that all made sense to you but if not, do not hesitate to ask. Alternatively, you can always reach out via email. Remember, keep learning & #StayCreative
Every time you say that the icons appear on the right hand side because it is a newer version. This is not true, it is because you have "wide screen" enabled. You would get exactly the same view in any version that has wide screen mode.
I was unaware that was the case. I use the default settings so it wiill look the same to new users that are following my tutorials. When I moved from version 1.3 to the 1.4beta, keeping the default settings, it changed to the toolbar being on the right. Thus, being the reason I mention it. I have never used the Wide Screen Mode so I was unaware that it would make that change. However, with that said, I upgraded my monitor just before I installed the 1.4beta so I can only assume that was the cause ie when booting the 1.4beta for the first time, it registered my hardware for use with the app & automaticallt set it to Wide Screen...maybe! Regardless, thank you for the heads up, my friend. I appreciate you. #StayCreative
Your #PunGame is on point my friend LOL. You are very welcome for the content, I love to create & I love to help people so this is a mixture of the two #StayCreative
