How do you get that lovely jazz tone out of a Strat? I have a nephew who is trying to achieve "that sound." I've advised him to turn the tone control almost all the way down on both the guitar and the amp, then bring them back up slowly until you hear what you want. Turn off any other "enhancements" on the guitar and amp, other than a "taste" of reverb. Use the neck pickup. Minimize the overdrive on the amp. I also recommended flatwound strings .012-.052. I told him to listen to players like Jim Hall. I don't know if P-90s would help or not. Myself, I'm learning to play on an acoustic Chinese "Wu" solid wood, hand-carved 17-inch sunburst archtop, that I had made for me a few years ago. Great playing. One of my favorite tunes when I want to be a stalker. :-)
