Great review. Just finished reading it after sitting on my shelf for a long time. Was a big fan of Straub, especially his early horror straight up horror novels.
A friend of mine told me that it was a quintessential 'haunted house' novel and that the house itself was very disturbing. Is it? I'm thinking of giving this novel a try. I enjoyed some of Peter Straub's previous works.
Hey, thanks for the video! As a matter of fact, Esslemont's books do not supplement Erikson's, they sat down before deciding to write, what part each of them will cover. Erikson wrote Gardens and Esslemont wrote Return of the Crimson Guard. Then they both kept the novels until they ended up being published, each in its time. The Malazan Book of the Fallen is in fact not the main one, it just happened to be the first one published. OMG, I just saw it! This video was published 8 years ago! Yeah, there's no way you could have known all this info, I learned it from Erikson's interviews that happened mostly in the past 3-4 years. It's sad RU-vid hasn't suggested this video to me before!
Tom Hanks tried to put a film adaptation together of 2061 and 3001 back around the turn of the century with MGM, but obviously it fell through. It would be interesting to see a third (and fourth) film in the series, but the closer we get to 2061, the more it ages like Terminator or Blade Runner. But I wouldn't care. It would still be interesting. The problem is, studios/corporations don't want "interesting", they want big, bombastic, don't-need-to-speak-English to enjoy the eye candy. That's probably why they never got made.
I love the way it’s written and the imagery evoked. Hits different to a lot of his other stuff. I read this years ago and found it captivating. Rereading it now and am really enjoying it.
I just recently read the whole four book series. The first book was actually released after the movie. It's nearly identical to the movie, with the only true difference being the planetary system setting. The second book retconed the first book and followed the events of the movie. Both the movies are good adaptations of the books. The series falls apart with the third book, 2061. This book sucked as well. It was just basically a rescue mission to Europa. This was a shame. The concept of Halley's comet coming around and landing on it is an interesting concept. I find that interesting because I might be one of few to see the comet twice in a lifetime (I'll be 81 years old in July of 2061). The book had promise, only to be abandoned for Floyd's rescue mission. The book should have explored the possibility of a monolith on the comet. But it failed to. 3001 follows this same bad recipe. I felt that the first ⅔ of the book was just Frank adapting to the future. Then, the rest of the book just seemed rushed. And it didn't answer any of the mysteries of the monoliths... at least not really. They are like Gods, but at the same time they're computers is my best guess. All the previous books hinted that the monoliths are drivers of evolution. This book made them evil all of a sudden. What is strange is I think 2061 and 3001 could be made into good movies if the right person was willing to kind of retrofit the storylines a little. I mean, the book of 2010 was written in the hart of the Cold War. The book and movie reflects this. 2061 followed this same timeline with minor changes in the balance of powers globally. If someone would be willing to write the scripts to a more up-to-date geopolitical setting, it would make for good movies. As for 3001, I think a few tweaks could make that story a good movie as well. It would kind of have a cross over into the Matrix feel to it at the end if it followed the source material. Maybe someone like Elon Musk could do the movies. He'd at least have the funding to do it right.
Asking questions and not answering them is bad writing. You NEVER leave the reader guessing. People want a nice tidy ending, not somethign they have to wonder about for the rest of their life.
I just finished the audiobook, gotta say it didn’t hit me nearly as hard as Hyperion. It really trudged on and didn’t get into it until more than halfway through. For me it seemed like Simmons created this outlandish piece out of a dare. But in the end I enjoyed it overall and am going on to olympos. After finishing it I’ve listened to numerous reviews and breakdowns like yours and they helped me appreciate it. Thank you!
This is great, Ben. Thanks. This has been on the shelf for years and I finally started it last week and I'm absolutely loving it. I'm excited to see if it passes my love for Hyperion, The Terror and Drood.
Hail Cigars and thy robust review with good wit and truth, alas, it is dark times; Mor"mazon" has equavalently sacked the literary Osgiliath equivalent of Professor Tolkien's lore and story with season one, it is a descration of "history of the elvish speaking tongues..Shall we now sit around the fire and muse sadly on Rings of Power? Our position, "Exsurge Tolkien" (published 25 March 22, and available for review on our channel), remains the most comprehensive analysis (and foreshadowed) of the Anti-Tolkien agenda of the ROP enterprise as declared by the showrunner's own words. We now see what the corporate machine theyocracy has wrought on Professor Tolkien's legacy: heresy, catastrophe, and disaster. Even the most ardent ROP supporters have weighed the show on the scales and found it wanting, "Auta i lóme" and "Aurë entuluva."
These commentary videos are the only reason I continued watching the show. The show is heaping pile of shit but these commentaries are gold. Thank you for your service!....Long time listener of the podcast too. I don't do the uncensored feed but this may have pushed me over the edge...😂
Thanks so much, Tyler! I’m quite proud of the uncensored feed. It’s not for everyone but it’s a mix of juvenile humor and stories/material I wouldn’t put on the main feed. Our uncensored Moby Dick read through is, in my opinion, the best thing we’ve ever done on the show
We hail thy words but also to gain better understanding of why the show is heresy, Join us for our counter ROP series. Mae G'ovannen! Now the evidence is clear, and none can deny that "ROP" is not of Tolkien. Take heart for our EXSURGE TOLKIEN that makes robustly clear the heresy of Tolkien's Canon displayed out of the showrunner's mouths and hearts. They probably know nothing of Tolkien's masterpiece, as evident from their interview in the Vanity Fair Article. For "they who proclaim to loveth Tolkien, yet understandeth, not his world view can neither hope to create a new film, show, or series of his secondary world." "Auta i lóme!" and" Aurë entuluva!"
You forget the point that you have to hope that a bit of splashy water causes the most epic vulcano eruption despite no evidence, no experience or any hint that water will cause such an eruption.
Miguel Sapochnik hates the light. Lighting is only a problem with the episodes he has directed. He directed the long night episode from GOT where you couldn't see a thing. He's doing it again in HOTD
Sadsack Clubfoot's leprechaun wagon train to Hobbiton is going to be the Donner party when winter comes. "Nobody walks alone, 'coz it's time for second breakfast!"
Galadriel's Ring, Nenya, is specifically described as being wrought of mithril. Vilya, Elrond's Ring, is wrought of gold. We are not told what Gandalf's Ring, Narya, is made of. Not that any of this is likely to affect the story they end up telling.
Good review and a cigar affectionado! Bravo, "Auta i lóme!" and "Aurë entuluva!" On September 3rd, the Tolkien phandom awoke and found half of the Tolkien-verse under the dominion of the corporate machine theyocracy. Thus we bring "council in these dark times,": EXSURGE TOLKIEN, our current channel's counter series. It is now beyond a doubt that The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power" is independent of Tolkien and his world's Orthodoxy. ROP is the second of four heresies: a schism that will leave a forever rift between the phandom and wrought confusion for years to come.
There are 4 plots going on simultaneously: Elrond & the dwarves, Galadriel in Numenor, the Hobbits w/ pre-Gandalf, and the Human & Elves vs. the Orcs. None of the storylines makes sense or makes the audience cares about them. If there was better editing and show running, this show might have been worth the money, but let's face it, money cannot buy quality, especially when it comes to Amazon
Maybe I am just an old boomer but I have a nagging suspicion that this kind of disjointed, shallow narrative in the show is a result of a writing team permanently in a state of near-distraction due to their phones and social media.
Heresy eventually perishes after it's lies are made naked and clear upon the sight of those it hopes to blind! We must stop watching this even for negative publicity because it feeds the amazon rating system. Take heart and join us for our EXSURGE TOLKIEN counter rings of power heresy series on our channel. It will be a happy thought in these dark times.
It's nice to hear a person interested in putting forth an actual intellectual point of view. Your content is superior because it provides thoughtful analysis. Thanks for the video.
SirBookSage had a great playlist he made of his ROP related videos. What’s how they organically grow over time. He really understands the book very well ❤
You know I just discovered your channel and you sitting in a recliner smoking a cigar low quality video cameras pretty appropriate for this show I commend you and you got yourself a subscriber
My thought about Criston getting away was maybe he came up with some excuse to justify attacking Joffrey, but then that doesn't seem to gel with the honest-to-a-fault character he's been portrayed as in the episode.
