Beautiful. Brutally beautiful. Silent tears run down my daddy's eyes every time he hears this music. He watched the anime when he was 11-12 years old. He told me he so felt this scene, the anguish of it, the loss in it, the loneliness and forlornness Oscar felt and the heart-rending blossoming of a true love that sailed with that setting sun. Concepts, feelings and emotions far too harsh for a child of his age to not just realise but to genuinely feel.
La Rose de Versailles 1979-1980 is a masterpiece of masterpieces in animation. The theme of this animation is love which happened during the French Revolution. This work accurately portrays how the French Revolution escalated in a very detailed manner from the beginning to the end and uses real historical figures as its characters including Marie Antoinette of Austria, Louie XVI, Fersen from Sweden who was in love with the queen, Robespierre, revengeful revolutionaries burning with anger such as Saint-Just, the clergies who were depraved to the utmost, and also the suffering peasants who once loved their king but turned their back on him and eventually put him to death. The main characters are Oscar François de Jarjayes, the daughter of an aristocrat, a friend of a queen who eventually falls in love with André Grandier who was raised as a servant in her house, but who was more like her brother and a true friend. They get married just 1 day before they die. The irony is that they could get to know each other's true feelings and be honest about it because the Revolution happened, but they are tragically put to death because of the same Revolution. As you all can predict, this animation's general vibe is very dark. It makes watchers' hearts heavy but also, it makes watchers very thoughtful and solemn. I cried so much. It's so historically accurate and detailed, that once you see the series in a row, you will feel like you are experiencing the real revolution. The soundtrack is superb. The songs make watchers extremely focused on the show and empathize with each character's emotions and feelings. I watched this work when I was 7, and when I was in my late teens, in my twenties, and also in my thirties. When I watched this work as a 7-year-old, I was fascinated with Marie Antoinette's beautiful dresses. I didn't understand what this work was about yet. When I watched this work as an 18-year-old, I was extremely interested in the love triangle of Oscar, Marie Antoinette, Fersen and their passion, jealousy, and sorrow that come because of love. I thought it was a tragic love story. When I watched this work again as a 26-year-old, I truly began to understand this work is about history and the French Revolution. The author gives a very detailed narrative about how the conflict started, escalated, and exploded instead of being resolved, throughout the flow of the work and plots mentioning important key dates and depicting critical historical events. Now I am watching this work again in my thirties, I am crying a river because of Andre Grandier and Louie XVI. It seems like the author tried hard to show that Louie XVI loved Marie Antoinette in his own way, even though she was having an open affair with Fersen. He still cared about her until the end. Even though the queen was not loyal, he was. The sorrow of his love makes me feel truly compassionate toward him. And lastly, I cried a river because of Andre's love for Lady Oscar. He loved her from the very start, even when Oscar's heart was toward Fersen. He even got blinded because of her!!!!!!! What kind of love is that? He could have just run away from Oscar, and lived a happy life with somebody else because he was not an aristocrat. He didn't like aristocrats! But he chose to stay with Oscar and die with her. I am crying a river because of this series. La Rose de Versailles is a great work. I plan to watch it again in my 40s and in my 50s with my two daughters. I am also wondering what kind of life the author lived to be able to complete a work like this.
