She always had a melancholy quality to her voice and demeanor, well suited to the folksongs she sang. My favorites... "Geordie" and her acapella duet with Maddie Prior, "Grey Funnel Line." Powerful...
I don't know who else was going around with a marimba, a pump organ, a baritone sax, a violator like Mark Ribot on guitar and a coalmine in his throat mixing Blues and Brecht in the mid 80's....
Initially the audience seemed to have no comprehension of the unique moments they were being exposed to ... and then, kinda midway through Walking Spanish ... they seemed to get it.
Not sure who Tom tells to "Watch it! " at around 10:27 but... they better watch it!!! Tom will mess ya' up! My favorite performance artist in this century, next to Jack Nicholson!!!! STUDS!!!!
I would not go that far. I would say he is as talented as Nina Hagen. Maybe they could write music for each other in their elderly years about crutches and walk-a-bout devices with hand brakes. BTW, they are both reverend by me.
i was in the audience for this and the stage crew had to stop people leaving as it was the last performance of the show. I was standing next to producer and we just looked at each and shook our heads. To be in the presence of such a talent and not appreciate it.
When the show ended he kept on playing as studio emptied. He went on to do more songs to the few people who had bothered to stay. Genius and I SAW HIM LIVE AND ONLY A FEW FEET FROM ME MAGICAL.
Was a new Tom Waits fan at 17 and loved his stuff. Watched this performance and was horrified. Didn’t know what to make of it. A few years later when I listened to swordfishtrombones it finally made sense. Was lucky enough to see him on the Franks Wild Years tour in Edinburgh and was blown away by that concert. Took me a bit of time to catch up but I got there in the end.
started out playing music before his time and ended up revolutionizing music. So far ahead of his time. I've been listening to you for years, but I feel like I just found you.
I'm from Brisbane and I unfortunately missed them. I am even more upset now to realise that Colin Greenwood was playing with Nick and Warren. Radiohead is my favourite band and I've learnt my lesson now, to see a band I love whenever I can. This was such a missed opportunity for me. The show looks amazing I hope you enjoyed it! :)
