Yes. Until others outbid you and you can't get the job. I had an estimate on a plumbing job from $24k up to $37k for the same job. It is a circus out there. Same for electrician wiring a house. Guess who got the job today? The cheapest guy who accepted my fair offer. Others asked about their estimate and I told them sorry. I think everyone needs to make a living so make 3 estimates, lowest, highest, and ask in between.
I worked 170 hrs in two weeks just now, more than all but one of my coworkers, and he still told me "You can't hang with the real hard workers" like brother at this point I don't even care I'm just trying to save $$$ for my family's future not perform for anyone.
just turned 19 an i joined underground construction so there’s a small percentage of us who are young and like to work a job like so or a job in general i guess you would say nowadays
There so many types of mortar these days, there is 100% a pre mix that will work better for your application than some inconsistent "seven shovels full" measurement or however youre mixing. Theres some old dude out there who can mix the perfect batch for every different kind of project there is, his mortar is better than pre mix. If youre under age 50 youre not him and if youre in your 20s learning this way you just started learning 40 years behind everyone else and youll never do as many mixes as the guy who can make better mortar than pre mix. Tldr i think this is more old men stuck in their ways and indoctrinated kids who learned from a master. The masters of today lack the technology to be better than the masters of tomorrow.
No joke, we literally have to joint every 3 coarse because it dries so quickly.... our labourer is also a bit of a dog phucker and we have to ask him every 10 minutes to add water
Where are you located? I'm working in Wasaga Beach and the sand is terrible! The forklift driver forgot to cover the cement and the bags are rock hard....
All this bull shit like no one wants to work ect is just how boomers justify selling their grandchildren into slavery to fund their retirement vacations and third house.
This is bullshit, the answer is that blue overalls were extremely common for factory workers to wear. And the reason why blue was so common is because blue dye with good chemical properties can be made very cheaply.
I don't understand this trend, like everyone wants their brick painted white now. Natural brick is much better looking, and you don't have to repaint it. Just pressure wash it every year, and it'll look brand new forever
Some masons are artists. Give me pallets of salvaged stone, old brick, new brick, I have put it all together for elaborate and sensible purposes. It is inspiring to create in ventures of imagination and deliver the architectural impact of consistency and beauty. 51 years at this trade, I have practically rebuilt the old downtown where I was born.
By the time a hoddy gets the knack for making mortar the proper consistency for the job, he either gets put back in jail, or announces he has a new job offer. I'm back to mixing it all myself then laying the material. Good technique gentlemen. That will be a great looking wall.
Fuck overtime, I don't want to work 7 days a week or 80 hous a week. I want to go home and pet my cat and read a book. I don't give a fuck about how late we are or how behind production we are or how much the customer wants this done. That's someone else problem not mine, and no one can make it my problem.
