Re Contact, considering the strength of the signal is inversely proportional to d^2, after a year d is about 1 lightyear. Comparing the signal strength at 1m vs 1lightyear... A lightyear is about 10^16m. So the change in signal is 10^-32. This is pretty hard to detect, even if you know exactly what direction it's coming from, and you aim a radio telescope directly at it. If you aren't already looking in that direction it's far below the strength of other closer sources.

I hate audiobooks (add won’t let me be great) but I was so invested I got the audiobook to pick up where I left off when I couldn’t physically read and WOW! Give that narrator a damn medal. Best audiobook ever, first time I could say it made it better.

Prometheus: Why it was shite. Like many sci-fi movies (hell, most movies in general) it started out well, beautifully shot, compelling premises, et cetera, but became almost instantly and frustratingly unbelievable because Of the dialogue and writing for the characters. You’ve got a ship full of what we're told are the best and most professional crew of scientists and specialists, but the moment they begin to act or ‘develop as a character,’ if you could possibly call it that, they become the antithesis of the kind of specialist and scientist you’d need for such a venture. They fall right back into that formulaic half dozen caricatures we see in any action flick, acting like complete idiots and so ridiculously unprofessional even for a crew in far, far less dangerous environments with far less to lose. For me it’s simply infuriating. As soon as one little thing goes wrong (and this because they’d failed to take ANY kind of precautions or follow any POA) the characters instantly fall apart mentally behaviorally in a way that would be hilariously cartoonish if it wasn’t a serious sci fi movie you were expecting.

I enjoy your content most of the time, but I was a little annoyed about the beginning of this video. I've been seeing this trend lately about RU-vidrs who have been on the platform for years talking about getting burnt out or just having worse days than others and yeah, that happens and it's fine, it happens to everyone, but it just annoys me when people complain about being successful like you were. I mean, I get it. Doing any one thing for so long, even if it's something you love doing, can become too routine and stressful that it can wear you down, but that is the pressure you put on yourself. You set your own pace, you decide how stressful you want to be. You are working for yourself, you are your own boss. No one is making you do as much as you do, you have no deadlines except the ones you set for yourself. If you are becoming miserable, you are the only one responsible for that and you have to decide how to deal with it. You are under no obligation to keep a certain schedule to keep up with any demands. This is your world, you are the one in control. It cannot control you unless you allow it to. Not everyone has the luxury of becoming successful as you have, and let's face it, you are successful and a bit famous on the internet or at least on RU-vid. With that fame and success comes stress, but it's stress that you place onto yourself. If this RU-vid career that you have is becoming too much for you, take a break or vacation or maybe even think about changing it up a bit or doing something completely different with your life. No one will blame you. You are in control of your own life and you actually have the finances I'm sure to make those decisions easier. Will you be able to sustain your lifestyle if you take time to breathe and decide whether or not to continue on the path you have set for yourself? You already know the answer to this. As I said, I get it. You're feeling the stress that any career can bring, it happens to most people, but I just don't see the point of complaining about how successful you've become and enjoying the benefits of that success while moaning about it on camera. It somehow feels condescending. Anyway, I hope you will take this as an honest opinion and not as an attack. I only wanted to share my observation of something that I feel is a self-inflicting issue. Whether you will even read this is probably questionable since you have implied in multiple videos the dreads of going through comments anymore and I understand that about becoming too big to worry about what the little people have to say anymore because you would never get anything else done if you responded to every comment. So, take this post however you see fit. I will continue to watch your videos, but I don't think I will watch the rest of this one. Keep doing what you do, or don't or whatever, up to you. Be well and I hope you have a delightful day.

This episode hit home for me because of my own traumatic past. I had an abusive childhood with a lot of extreme bullying at school combined with physical and mental abuse from my father at home, all of which made me vulnerable to trusting an older guy at age 10 and being molested as a result. I realized later that I stopped being a child at that point. I had sexual desires for men at age 10 and I realized that I was an adult way too soon, but I didn't understand that at the time. The worst part is that I had relatives who knew this was going on, but did nothing to stop it from happening. Needless to say, I had a very rough time growing up and even into adulthood I had a lot of trouble being social with other people. Even today, I find it harder and harder to trust people. Keep in mind that I have actually had multiple experiences of being molested as a child, including from a doctor at age 13, and being sexually assaulted as an adult more than once. I always claimed the gay label since I came out and I have never been ashamed of it or anything, but I have recently began to question my real sexual identity. Would I still have been gay if I was not influenced in my childhood? I don't regret my lifestyle, but I still wonder if my life would have been more "normal" if I wasn't molested. I feel like I was influenced into feeling a certain way by this older guy and then left to face the world on my own with no clue what I was doing or how to live my life. I never had any real support from family and I was never able to make any real friends. I had so much trouble in school, that I finally just quit going in 8th grade and I never went back. I have survived being homeless more than once and suicide attempts multiple times. I no longer have the desire to end my life, but I also find it difficult to find any motivation for living as well. I desperately need someone to talk to and I have tried to find someone, but it's been very difficult and I find it hard to trust anyone calling themselves a doctor, having been molested and manipulated by them in the past. I just feel constantly trapped in this life with no way to get out of it. I'm over 50 now, so I'm able to live with my past for the most part, but I still struggle at times. I have so much anger and sadness, but no real outlets to express them, so I've learned how to keep them inside, especially my anger and I have to keep it under control because I know what I am capable of if I allow it to take over me. Property would get damaged and someone would get hurt and I don't want to be that type of person. Anyway, sorry for my rant, but this episode hit home for me and I just got carried away. I could go on and on, but I don't want to bore anyone further. Good episode. Thanks for reading.

I don't know if it's just me, but the audio for each person is very different. Joe sounds very low and I can barely hear what he says while the guest speaks quite loudly and I have a hard time trying to adjust the volume to a spot that works well for both voices since I can only turn my volume up to a certain point.

Can we please lose the "unless you've been living under a rock" phrasing? It's old and tired and way overused. I know what it means, it's just annoying to hear so much since every RU-vidr who covers world events uses it to excess. Plus, it's a bit insulting to anyone who may actually not be up to speed on every little thing going on in the world. Not everyone follows every little detail that happens in the world. That doesn't make anyone in that situation "living under a rock", it just means they might not be following the events of whatever you are talking about and that's fine. The phrase doesn't even make sense. I mean, has any human in the history of ever actually lived under a rock? Think about what you say.

Anyone who mispronounces "nuclear" is just being lazy, in my opinion. It's really not that difficult. If they can say clap or clean or clear, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to say nuclear. If they can say nucleus with no issue, then they have no excuse for not saying nuclear correctly. Granted, some people have actual speech impediments that make it difficult for them to pronounce certain words or letter groups correctly, but most people do not have that excuse and they are just being lazy and not even trying.

Just a slight criticism for the videos on this channel. I know it's a popular trope to have a clip of the interview before the actual interview starts, but I find it very annoying. A lot of other creators do that and it's even done with many movies to show the middle of it before starting the actual movie and it always irks me. For one thing, it's confusing because you see the middle of the conversation before the beginning and then when it gets to the part that was shown in the beginning, we've already seen that part and it distracts from the forward flow of the conversation, if that makes sense. It's like when movies show the ending of the movie first and then say "3 days earlier" or "15 hours earlier". That just drives me insane and I often don't watch movies that do that because I feel it is unnecessary. It's like getting a preview of the movie you already decided to watch or check out. Trailers exist for a reason, they aren't needed for the movie you are already watching in the movie itself. Just start the movie, or in your case the interviews, from the beginning. I hope you will take this as honest criticism and consider what I have said and not feel any negativity from it. I do enjoy watching your content and I try to keep up with everything you do and for the most part I have no issues with anything apart from this one thing. Keep up the good work and keep going for as long as you are able.

Part of the problem is that anything can be considered a cult or have cult-like practices. In my opinion, there's no real difference between most religions and cults, they are organizations of faith and belief. Other examples of cults are politics, televangelists, MLMs aka pyramid schemes and others. Of course, some groups are more extreme than others and may demand loyalty in ways that are intimidating to its members, keeping them trapped. One thing I find interesting is the word itself, cult, which stems from the word culture, which is something that most people look favorably upon, depending on which culture you refer to.

Such an amazing story of this man. I feel sadness for him but am pleased to see that he has been I'd. This engineer in this interview is his name Dr. Abbott well he did a wonderful job on locating this man's identity. I do not see him as obsessed with Locating the id of the Somerton man Charles but rather a hero! If not for his persistence. Charles may have never been identified. That would have been tragic. Bravo Dr. Abbott. On a side note, I do think Charles went to the ocean and placed himself there looking out into the sea and ended his life. He seemed to have faced tragedy loosing a lot of his family members and I believe his ex wife was the rough one. Abusive does not seem to fit Charles' character as being poetic and what was briefly said about him on another site I watched wherein his new found family members showed pictures of him with his family at his youth and stated he like to joke around? Also the comment from the ex husband. Anyway I just feel sadness that Charles felt no other way out. RIP Charles.

There was a scheme to encircle central London, England, with a motorway. The first part was built through a poor area with many homes demolished while houses and flats (apartments) only a few feet away were left to suffer the traffic noise and fumes. When the planners wanted to push through a wealthy area the people had the money, and clout, to oppose the scheme and it came to a grinding halt - a bit like the traffic would have done. Jay Foreman made an excellent video describing events, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yUEHWhO_HdY.htmlsi=K4cMUeSpRUpddwRI

Hi. I'm super excited to have found this book. It caught my glimpse as I saw it as a recommendation on Obamas instagram haha. I suffer from depression and for a long time I had difficulties to pick up a book although I love sci-fi. Also I watched the Martian a lot. It really really helped me. Both books are centered around loneliness and finding a reason to make your journey worth it. <3 Thank you, Andy Weir. I'm already waiting for the next one.

A black hole isn't actually a hole, it's actually a dark star people in the science community really need to pop their chest up and say that(if you're in an actual science community and not just with some tech "nerds") {C.G.I. is gone a bit too "far" don't you think?}. Because it would be considered pretty obvious false scients otherwise, I'm tired of the sick jokes, nothing truly can get done this way. Call it a dark star like it is and actually make sense, and please quit trying to get other people's rocks off, it'd be better to be honest instead. I would say I would be disappointed but, that should be beyond me. 😁 Grow up and tell Disney to go f themselves. They were withering when I was around, I only wonder why that "ghost town" is up again? 😢

What it means to be human, Rumi quote, don't break a human heart for the whole Universe resides in it, he is most likely implying intentionally in a sense that you cannot please everyone. Carl Sagan obviously studied Rumi and said something similar.

I do enjoy this conversation. Having said that when KB briefly touched on free speech in my opinion he is wrong. He doesn’t understand that the Supreme Court has consistently ruled against the restriction of free speech obviously something that’s already illegal would not be allowed but that’s because it’s already illegal.

There will never be a theory of everything when you only have a few pieces of the puzzle. Sabine describes it best concerning dark matter and energy et al.. .. 'Here be dragons', as in an antique map. Just dark matter can have a multitude of basic physics components yet to be discovered, much more than those that we already know. Is it a 50 piece jigsaw, 10,000 piece or whatever?
