Just waiting for your video analysis of Race 4 today…. I noticed a big difference in the mast rake of the two boats. What would you expect to be best in such strong winds?
@mozzysails would you please explain why in very light wind they don't keep both foils in the water together? Surely there is increased drag but there is also increased lift - seemingly more than the drag. So why don't they have an ultra light wind mode where they just fail with both boards in the water?
They need the righting moment to create power and speed. Any lift out to the windward side really hurts this. So it's always faster to lift that foil as it's lift will stop them sheeting the sails in as hard.
Why does Luna Rossa or any boat start to leeward, hit the boundary and have the windward boat lee bow with control for the majority of the race. Its happened heaps and it has been very difficult to win from.
I dont think there was anything easi in alinghi winning the cup. Coming on a well established design rule with veteran teams is a big feat. I do think you cant compare Alinghi 2024 and what it was 20 years ago. Particularly the will of the ceo is certainly not the same. On the contrary i think we see a lot of mistakes and problems from the top teams, i think some genius, lets say an adrian newey of sailing with the right backing could have swiped this cup.
Thank Mozzy, great as usual....and one question for every one looking by youtube America's Cup channel...Tha's a way to change mode on youtube for just on board audios listening? ---I still can't find out
@@MozzySails thank found...just from pre starrt image in main video seems you can have differents audio tracks and main view....but I can't find out youtube option to have it(soory for my "italianEnglish :( )
We're using a phone to record and sailview to analyse. I often use my vakaros and sailviewer which is a mobile app, but when back home often use SailNjord Analytics. Pros and cons of each
Good question. Am from newzealand do think newzealand has had this innovation on point from the get go am thinking they would have worked it back to stay legal will at least hope they did .they will have lots of options that will be available questionable to say the least. Guess they're waiting to see if needed. As will have to explain if do .
Just couldn't go pass am cyclors positioning seem to be disconnected .as you say many factors this was a link that felt looked not max out on output compared to other teams did like the way they fought back am was on a charge there boat harder to keep the power speed at critical time s definitely had every one take notice. I think they sailed best they could with boat they had .
I've been a fan for years, thank you for your dedication and effort to covering sail events generally and the Cup in particular. This round has been remarkable to me for the absence of litigation. I can't remember a previous cup without a significant court challenge of some kind, but this one seems to be going off like a normal sporting event. Do you agree? If so, to your eyes is this because the challenge was better defined than in previous cups, or something more intangible on the water?
Can you do a video on how the sails, rudder and foils are actually moved and trimmed. We hear about the human hydraulics and electric foil arms, but How fo the all work? Are the steering by wire?
Opening statement "Emirates Team New Zealand Very Impolitely"...You have to take a dig don't you! You realise how bias you are against Emirates Team NZ? You are not going to win the cup by verbally running down the cup holder. At least Sir Ben Aynsley has a fundamental respect for Emirates Team NZ. I think you boys should learn to have a basic respect or go back to sailing your puddle jumpers!
😊 sort of like cars... -INEOS turned up with an Aston Marten -LUNA turned up with a Ferrari & NYYC turned up with a Corvette YIP-KIWIS are gonna needa McLaren!
What's the rule on boundaries? On the beat, if the windward boat has the leeward one pinned, can the windward boat force the leeward one out past the boundary? Or do the rules say that's not allowed, and the windward boat has to give way and allow the leeward one to tack away from the boundary?
Nicely done, Mozzy. However, I'm not certain that LRPP still has the edge in lighter airs: they didn't by the end of the round robin, and Glennie speculated that LRPP had now moded its boat closer to ITB. Whether these mode changes are more permanent or more flexible ('gearing') from race to race, I wot not.
Thanks for the really great analysis. Wondering if any of the teams would have done any real time analysis of the bad air shadow (size and shape) behind the lead boat? Presumably at these boat speeds, high AWS and small AWA this shadow would be significantly different to lower speed boats. Is bad air more of an issue (over a bigger area and more turbulent) on upwind legs than downwind legs?
Good analysis here of the details, and good observations. Looking at the big picture though, if you win the start, barring big mistakes, you'll probably win the race.
I have a question, svp. Why does LR tack on 10:10? Shouldn't they have kept their course and force IB to go behind its stern? Am I wrong with the rules? Thank you!
I was wondering this also. Maybe something to do with the boundary e.g. when Ineos were in the lighter shaded region in the graphics on the water, perhaps LR become the give way boat?
I agree with Mozzy Sails, the day was tied but slightly more disappointing for Ineos, LR looked very fast in a condition in which Ineos was expected to be faster and only great sailing by B.A. won the second. LRPP could have caught up, Ineos in the first could not. It could be the opposite in lighter wind who knows?
Yeah. I expected for Ineos to dominate both races too, but it was very close even in the one they won. LRPP gonna take it in the end? It was such great racing!
Wish the broadcast is showing more data on the screen and the commentating talking more about what's going on. But this video is just perfect for what I was missing the broadcast.
I noticed that one of the more successful starts was INEOS against Alinghi. When they were caught out on starboard way above the line and had to "race" back to the line. Alinghi had a good start right on the clock, but INEOS bore down on the line at 40kts and gybed and carried all the momentum with them and just sailed off at top speed UPWIND. I'd definitely try this in their position instead of always trying to catch LRPP in a mistake..... choose the side and come in full speed carrying a lot of momentum.
Have you watched the stern camera views for both races on each boat? 1. so bllody fast and so little real time to make the tight decisions and execute them. 2. it looks like Luna Rossa have secret automation of setting and mode which gives them slick manoeuvre and taster onto ideal sail settings. is that allowed?
I was astounded by how 2 boats that look so different can perform so equally today. Truly fantastic to see. On another note, I'm certainly glad that Ben didn't follow through with the "more aggressive" route in the second race. As you say, a couple of sailing errors killed them in R1 (which was already a result of aggression IMO) if they had been more aggressive in R2 then they would have been spanked. Seems like cooler heads on the coaching staff prevailed, which is a healthy sign that the team is set up right.
As LR supporter I fear to see the lighter wind match now . Couldn't we be surprised by a INEOS become stronger in light conditions as well as LR has in the harder.....?? hmmmmm can't wait to see
Ineos' maneuvers still do seem more shaky, which is at least in part what kills their light airs performance. I thought it was related to the compromises they made in order to make their boat perform better in the rough, but recent races proved that LR is at worst very close, if not better. I'm more impartial here (ETNZ supporter since the lead mines), but if Ineos aims to win this one, they do need to step up, or get lucky.
Great comments and analysis as always. Really appreciated. Just one thing I am not sure I agree with you is when you suggest INEOS may have some challenges in the low wind range... The two losses against Alinghi in the semi-finals, were actually caused by a wrong choice of sails as in the first one they went with a smaller jib (Ben denied it in the interview immediately after, but in the following race he said "for this one we took a bigger jib") and in the second lost race, also with marginal winds, they had a smaller main. IMHO that was what made them struggle to keep their boat up on the foils, whilst Alinghi kept it flying all the way. Those decisions make me wonder if INEOS (Ben in this case), is somehow afraid to be slightly overpowered for any reason, and prefers risking being short, or if those were simply strategic mistakes. BTW: In the first race when they went with the smaller jib, the forecast showed increasing wind throughout the afternoon, but during the race it actually came down a bit. So, this may be the underlying reason for his decision, and for the result. But I still don't understand why risking being short, especially in marginal winds.
Right to point our the advantages of each Team. Lets remember its how fast you learn. If INEOS can adapt a learn faster then I would be happy with a 6 6 result and one race to win it. The brain trust on shore need to really get this right. We are into the tight marginal gains. One wind shift in the final race and your opposition SAILS AWAY. Compelling stuff. LETS hope we get the marginal gains we need.
I don't understand why they did only one regatta in the american's cup youth final. It would have been interesting to see more racing between LR and AM.
One thing I have noticed with brits is they call... person 1 calls: board down board starts going down person 2 says: 3 2 1 made (board is down) then they tack/gype "board up" is called other teams seem to start the tack/gybe whilst the board is going down. obviously the way the brits do it is safer as it ensures the board is down and flow attached before they start the tack/gybe but it increases the amount of time they spend with 2 boards in the water. Thoughts?
