The winners are the performers. Amazing consistency, feeling and mic technique. They are all great and the day I can buy one of those without guilt will be a great day.
I thought was you said about the suspension was GOLD, can you make a video and elaborate more as to how one would go about to do the same upgrade? I just bought the same year model with 5k miles on it and since would love to upgrade the stock suspension.
I switched computers and logged into youtube just to tell you that this mic comparison is awesome and perfect! and the music beautiful! At my studio, the U87 is just my go-to for most sources and sounds most like the way I hear music. But in some cases I need that open top end and the Manley does that incredibly well. I also think the Manley gives off a much richer tube sound than the Lewitt. Speaking of tube richness, have you ever tried the Neumann M149?
The versatility of the Lewitt is hard to beat, awesome range and sound, best value $ for sure, for pure vocal and the way I like things to sit I would choose the Manley cardioid for vocals.
Great comparison. IMO the U87Ai sounds the best in her voice, and the M149 also sounding really good. The Manley reference cardiod being a very different mic still has its touch.
Came here to listen to the 1040 or make my decision of buying it , but know I am between 1040 and m149. Have a lota o condenser mics in my home studio (u87 , sphere dlx , Akg c414, tlm 103) and thinking of buying the last one. In your Between Neumann 149 and Lewitt 1040 for a tenor , which sings usually opera , 60s/80s music and sometimes a 00s rock and roll , which one do you choose ?
Hi. Thanks for writing. It's really hard to recommend a mic without hearing the source so I cannot lead you one way or another. Both are excellent choices, however, the Lewitt will offer much more flexibility due to it's many sonic faces and may be a more useful mic overall. The 149 sounds great, but gives you only that one sound. Please let us know what you decide!
The first time I listened to this song, it put a smile on my face & and gave me a happy feeling all day. Isn't what music should do? Hope she comes to Austin or Texas.
What vocal mic is that, is it DPA, and if so D:Facto or the DPA 2028? I just bought a 2028 and started using it a couple of weeks ago with singers at my weekly gig and it's excellent. THe singers and I all love it. I'll get to try a 4055 on kick this week too
I know that dpa 2028 gots high ein(equivalent input noise) of 22dbA. I'm wondering if this would cause any problem in my recording. Though I don't hear any white noise in this vedio, I'm just worried if 22dbA is really low enough for studio recording.
I've used the 2028 for many recordings and have never had an issue with noise. I'm far more concerned with the singer's delivery and performance than any non-existent hiss I may encounter. Search for "DPA FYSTS" here on RU-vid and hear for yourself. Or better yet, try to demo one and see if it's a concern for you. Report back and let us know!
The 1040 on full FET had a nice tonality, nice high SPL handling on the belt too. If I was recording this song in particular I'd go the 149 for the style before any of the others, however, if any of them showed up on my doorstep tomorrow I'd happily accept!
So glad to see/hear you do your thing. I bought a huge 2-bass hard shell travel case at your bass store(in Sherman Oaks) back in 2000 or 2001 and have sporadically followed your work since then...Wishing you continued success.👍🏽
