Aviation and Filmmaking run deep for me - I bounce between being a pilot that happens to make films, or a filmmaker who happens to be a pilot. Regardless, here I share my aviation experiences with you through the lens of a camera. Welcome!
The US system always struck me as odd. The instructor usually has barely more experience than the student. If you translate that into getting a driving license no one wants to be instructed by someone who got his drivers license a month ago but in aviation it’s the norm.
Thank you for a visually stunning video. Thanks very much for all the thoughts on safety. Most channels don't cover the importance of safety. I have not watch this channel in a while and glad I am subscribed.
As i watched you make the decision I counted the strikes. (1) 40kt headwind causing excesssive fuel burn to destination leaving minimum acceptable fuel on landing (2) potential weather moving in at destination at arrival time (3) night flying over mountains with fuel at minimums. I was thinking what airport is close? Will Josh make the decision to get fuel at least? As expected you did. The trepidation on both of your faces was apparent long before you called it so i knew you would. good job.
my first instrument flight was in Atl, pdk, and the conditions were: 200 ovc, vis 10. scattered thunderstorms. i blew the ils, and he had to take control. it was a stupid and dangerous flight.
Great video Josh! 🎉🎉 I will be able to attend OSH24 this year and these are great tips, also love that Cessna 172 what a great airplane that is! 😂🎉 Also another safety item to mention at OSH is the fact that if you approach for your base leg from the east and you are unfamiliar with flying over lakes (especially the Great Lakes) you REALLY need to keep a lid on your aircraft’s speed and don’t be afraid to USE THE RUDDER as crosswinds from the Great Lakes occur frequently and can be very strong in gusts and dangerous! 😊 Other than that great job as always I just became a fan of your channel recently via a friend of mine and I love it! Finally I have a RU-vid channel Caleb’s Aviation where I make all sorts of aviation related videos from my flying lessons for the C172 to trip report vids and behind the scenes videos at interesting airports worldwide so plz do check out my channel! 😁 Wishing You Blue Skies & Tailwinds” my friend! Cheers 🥂 Caleb’s Aviation
Isthmus be the place. Optical illusions abound at this airport both on 22 and 4. Check out the zip line eco tour. This has to be booked way in advance though.
Another lesson: Don't go on (long) cross country flights w/o an extra $300 in your wallet or on your emergency debit/credit card for those times that you have to RON (remain overnight) short of your destination or home base. And the more people on board &/or bigger the plane &/or greater the distance, increase your RON budget accordingly.
If the winds loft are different chances are the wx at your destination could be different so that alternate was definitely a good choice. I’m not a big fan at flying at night, but I would prefer IFR makes things a little bit easier.
Loved this video. Excellent lesson in in-flight ADM. Diverting for fuel is almost always a good idea even if it means you will be flying at night afterwards. Also you definitely want to be aware of all the various Class D airspaces in Socal. Just as an aside: KOXR tower would have easily granted you a transition through their Delta had you called them up before exiting the KCMA Delta and before calling Mugu Approach to pick up Flight Following. Re: Catalina, I've flown in there a few times and have an interesting story of my own. One of the main landing gear brakes on the plane I was flying (a Czech Sport Aircraft Sportcruiser) failed on the runway after landing and we lost the ability to use differential braking for steering on the ground. Important to note: Sportcruisers castering nosewheels, so this was a big deal. Luckily we were able to taxi off the runway and park the plane out of the way on the gravel between the runway and the paved parking area. Since we obviously weren't going to take off with functional brakes only on one side, we were lucky enough to hitch a ride back to Hawthorne (KHHR) with the KAVX airport manager in his Warrior and then take a Lyft back to KSMO. By the time we got back to Santa Monica, it was dark. The next day the flight school ended up flying out a maintenance guy to Catalina to repair the failed brakes and fly the plane back to KSMO.
Student pilot @ 36 hrs in a C172 contemplating a career change to aviation from medicine. Just discovered this channel and I absolutely love the content and your safety oriented mindset. Taking nothing for granted, humility in the sky is the safest way to fly. Well done.
That instructor was just a dick, but what killed them was his ADM. I would NEVER file IFR with storm cells in a light plane in TX while instructing. It is dicey enough remaining VFR and dodging rain shafts and clouds. You don't have the equipment or speed/ceiling to fly that way and are rolling the dice to meet an embedded thunderstorm.
Excellent tip about the manual-inflation vests. Auto-inflate can trap you in the plane if it's sinking and filling with water. I personally also feel more comfortable with a raft on board. That water's cold. I don't much want to float immersed even for a short time. One other tip about Catalina: it doesn't have a conventional VASI/PAPI. It has a rare flashing-light system. Worth reading up on that thing to help stay on glide path for that runway, since the sight picture is unusual to say the least.
Busy airport you want to circle 500’ over pattern and look at traffic below. I did the no radio into air venture. It’s not for faint of heart. But if it’s busy in Catalina that’s your best bet.
imagine the potential disaster if that cfi ended up flying as a pilot for a major airline, if his attitude was dangerous as a cfi then it would have been even more deadly in a plane with 200 passengers
Reported earlier. The man on whose property the party was taking place, 42-year-old Timothy A. McKellar Sr., was “admonished (by police) three times to break up the … underage drinking and he refused,” according to the citation. Additionally, after being told that he would be charged with a crime if he failed to “take control of the situation,” McKellar continued to ignore KSP’s commands. .............Wasn't there any over seeing board that could have shut this guy down? He killed this kid.
I think I saw your videos a long time ago - maybe before you became an instructor? I was doing my PPL much at the same time as you - just here in Norway. You allways made very interesting videos - And I recognized you at the way you count the seconds when extending and retracting your flaps lol :-) Great video this too! 🙂
I am a private pilot for many year and unfortunately my flying has been intermittent throughout the year. I moved back to South Florida from NYC and decided, having made a bunch of money in my life, to continue my flying. I cannot tell you that in the past 3 months that I’ve never ever seen such reckless disregard for safety among several flight instructor from Palm Beach to Hollywood. My flight instruction who has entered into my hero hall of fame along with my Dad and Frank Lloyd Wright has saved my life by his instruction and good judgement over the years that every single time I saw my limitations I never ever tempted fate. I love him for the man he was and the pilot he made me. These instructors have less time than me and no sense at all and in fact it appears that they do not grasp the seriousness of given situations that I was put in. I have yet to find a career CFII that I would feel safe flying with up till now. I know I have wide gaps in my knowledge base and although I’m a private instrument rated pilot with nearly 600 hours I do not feel comfortable yet with my flying to buy an Airplane, thank God Bless James Picket ATP CFII with nearly 25,000 hours
thx for the great cockpit tour! i have a question to ask. or maybe two: If you have an non turbo charged engine, EGT (total) is measured at the exhaust manifold exit, if you have a turbocharged engine, than EGT would be measured after the turbocharger, right? And TIT at the outlet of the exhaust manifold/turbo inlet, similar to EGT on the natural aspirated engine? Without a charger, you lean for fuel economy and richness of mixture based on peak EGT, turbocharged for economy and for preventing charger damage above TIT_critical?
My flight school was KTOA. Thus, Catalina was in our practice area. However I absolutely refused to land at Catalina. There is something that scares the heck out of me about the cliffs on both sides of that airport. Oh, and btw, we never wore life vest.
