Fly tying and fishing in Spain Welcome (Bienvenidos) to Neil’s Spanish Fly Box, where we take a look at some of the flies used in Spain and elsewhere.
¿Hola, que tal? En principio, este es un video diseñado para pescadores que entienden inglés, pero por supuesto, ¡cualquiera puede verlos! Si eres un pescador de habla hispana y te gustaría comentar en español, te responderé en español. ¡No seas tímido!
Learn about some new (some not so new) and interesting fly patterns, that can be found in every Spanish fly fisherman’s armoury, including some ‘must haves’! Real flies for real fly fishers.
I have fly fished in Spanish competitions for over 11 years, on rivers and still water, learning a great deal about the Spanish way of fishing and the flies that are used.
Great fishing content. I enjoyed it !! Today was the first day of stocking in the stillwaters here in Wv USA. I had an awesome day of catching the stockers. The trout were very picky eaters, the only thing I could catch them on was a size 24 midge type nymph under a bobber, or indicator to be proper I guess. Ive been curious about your nymphing line. May I ask what brand it is and the diameter ? Thanks!!
@@wvlongshooter3912 Hello, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. With regard to stocked trout, I think that they need a day or two to become accustomed to their surrounding, their new environment, before they start looking for food in earnest. I think that is why you found them ‘picky’ and having to fish a size 24 fly. In Europe and the UK, we call this fishing under the ‘bung’. Bungs are made of various floating materials, but generally some form of foam. They are easy enough to make, but in competitions, the bung must be capable of catching fish and the hook and bung must be to the regulatory length. It’s a style that I have often used. With regard to my nymphing line, email incoming.😉
@@johnruby4915 Hello john, great to hear from you. Thank you, it was a good session and, as I said, nice not to struggle and have to seek out fish with the downstream steamer!!🤦♂️
@@bobhammond8067 Hello Bob, don’t be jealous be careful!! From now until then will feel like years - patience and you will be rewarded with fish in your landing net.🤞
@@burtonbrocious171 Hello Burton, good to hear from you. I can tell you that, nobody was more surprised than me, to catch second cast! Full video release soon.👌
@@wvlongshooter3912 Thank you. As I have said previously, the water and flow is governed by the reservoir above. It has certainly been high and difficult during the summer months.👍
Hopefully I’ll get out in a day or two and can shoot video to return the favor to you Neil. Sporting my new hat. I’ll do my best to look sexy in it. Thanks amigo.
@@ross1458 Hello Michael, thank you for your heartfelt comment!😂 Indeed, not a lot to it, but apparently, its popularity runs a close second place to its success rate!😉
@@neilsspanishflybox very true. It comes from Pennsylvania the state just north on mine. A more fun to tie version of a mop fly but it’s been around a lot longer. Chartreuse. Can’t go wrong with that. I even tie some with chewing gum chenille.
@@ross1458 Hello again! Yes, I see the resemblance to a mop fly, which I do use, also in chartreuse. Mainly when still water fishing though. I will give it a try next time I have the opportunity, as it is a newbie for me!🙈 I don’t think the comparison to an inchworm would necessarily apply in Spain, I think that it is just a colour that rainbows find attractive, with of without the loop tail.🤔
@@wvlongshooter3912 Hello there, great to hear from you! Thank you for your generous comment and it’s good to see that you are back ‘in harness’, as it were. 😉
@@Tjk186 Hello there! Thank you for your generous comment. Yes, I use CDC on a few of my flies, not just nymphs, to create a bit of extra movement. With a little adjustment, this will serve well for dry dropper.👍
Nice fish from the run off Neil to the ever reliable pheasant tail nymph..I think we all owe a big historical thank you to Mr.Sawyer for all the fish and enjoyable sport he enabled from his pattern over the years 👏well done
@@Tjk186 Hello TJ, thank you for your kind comments. The PTN has been and is, tied in so many different ways. Remarkably, the vast majority catch trout! In case you missed it, I have added a link to a video that I did a year or so ago, tying Frank’s original version. 😊 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fqwdcXwyUtE.htmlsi=GxVkzEWF-ObMCEfU
@bobhammond8067 Hello Bob and thank you for your comment. You seemed to have had the cast on for such a short while! At least you have a target date to get back into the river again - but please try and stay upright and injury free!!🎣
@@Tjk186 Hello TJ, good to hear from you and thank you for your generous comment. Sifting through the back catalogue I see!👏🏻 I try to be as open and helpful as possible, which I believe, every fly angler should be? Until we get into the realms of competitions, but even then, little snippets after the event!!😂
@@stevepotischman5939 Hello Steve, that begs the question, “would it still catch trout?”. Quite probably, although for rainbows, with no flashy element, they would have to take off their sunglasses to see it!!😂
Lovely journey to your river on the mountain country roads Neil …may I ask what’s the system ( fishing day/week permit / licenses, season dates etc) for a visitor to fish in your part of Spain please?…well done reading the change in conditions and getting some fish on your ever reliable mini buggers …always enjoy fishing along with you
@@Tjk186 Hello TJ, great to hear from you. On the river that you mainly see in the videos, it is stocked rainbow trout and you can fish all year. Day permits on club controlled waters are 25-30€ each day and ‘rest’ days vary from club to club, so, to the best of my understanding, they do not issue weekly permits. There is a multi-regional licence available, that has the very reasonable cost of around 25€ per annum. This is super for all anglers, but especially for competition anglers as we travel to various regions for competitions. It was tough going, to generate this video, but I’m glad that you continue to appreciate my content.😊
Well, I guessed wrong, I picked you’d catch them on the nymph. I think you had one fish on the nymph that came un hooked. Then you had 5 catches on the buggers or streamers. I see you had a double there too. It looked like a tough day but catching the ones you caught looked like a great day!!! Hey, I appreciate it, thanks!!
@@wvlongshooter3912 Hello there, it was a difficult session and it was not that I didn’t try other methods and changes of flies. Some days are like that, but aren’t we fly fisherman lucky to have the natural surroundings that we fish in - catching the odd trout is a bonus.😉
@@bobhammond8067 Hello Bob, yes, it was certainly a tough morning, but managed to winkle a few out in the end. Fishing!🤦♂️ You are a glutton for punishment!! If he says yes, PLEASE be careful, although I feel that there is a sense futility in that request!😂
@@chili1593 Hello there, it is good to hear from you. This is a great fry pattern for both lake and river. Is it ‘interesting’ enough to tie some up and give it a go I wonder??😂👍
This fly will definitely work on the creeks here. It’s a little different than the flies or streamers i use or see others use so I’m tying this one. If it’s a fly the fish haven’t seen, I think they will eat it. I think I’ll incorporate a little yellow of some kind into it. The browns should eat this fly. It’s an interesting fly, I like it. I will also tie it just as you have. We finally got rain here and our streams are up and muddy. I fished my favorite creek yesterday and I hooked and lost an absolutely huge brown. I felt blessed to have just hooked such a trout. I had four eats and only landed one. It’s was approximately 16-17”’s and it ate a black jig streamer. The water was up a couple feet, the water was roaring down the creek. This put the bigger browns right on the bank out of the current. I only fish three hours but it was nice to finally fish a little. I hope to fish more this week. Hey enough about me, thanks a bunch for the tie!!!!!
@@wvlongshooter3912 Hi, in coloured water, black is always a good colour fly to fish with. Yes, it seems the right thing to do for the trout, out of the flow and the majority of impurities that are coming down the river. I imagine that the water may be clearer closer to the river bed. I would argue that, the hardest part of fly fishing is attracting the offer, the variables that exist after hooking the fish…… well, I don’t think I have explain. You may like to try Glo-Brite No.11 for your touch of yellow, instead of No.4? If you don’t want to use a bead, add some lead wire along the body instead. Feel blessed to be back on the river.👍
@@stevepotischman5939 Hello Steve, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. Streamer rods: it is important to use the right rod for the river that you are fishing, the style that you are fishing and the weight of flies that you are casting - I think that they are the three fundamentals. It is clear from my videos that the river that I regularly fish, is not a large river. When I think of many US rivers that are very large, sprawling and very fast flowing, I probably wouldn’t think of using a 3 wt.! If you are fishing streamers tight line style however, with a mono leader, casting into pockets, a standard nymphing 10’ 3wt would serve. If I was fishing a large sculpin, for example, across and down, with a long retrieve against the flow, I might go for a 5 or 6wt. So what I look for in a streamer rod depends upon the aforementioned; I would add that for still water, I use 10’, 7wt, it’s all about ‘horses for courses’. Sorry that I can’t be more precise!😊
@@wvlongshooter3912 Hello, yes, it wasn’t a particularly long session, but with some chopping and changing I managed to net a few fish. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video.👍
