@kimmieGreen17 i have a question, i have a 2 1/2 X 1 sq foot aquarium that i use for my single Dwarf Hamster. I use 2 different types of substrate. 2/3 of the cage I'll line with pine shavings about 5" deep when its not compressed and the last 1/3 of his cage I'll use the compressed paper and I'll line that about 4" deep and will put his house over that. But, my main question is that before i put in all the substrate ill add about 1 inch of it and then take paper towel tubes and toilet paper tubes cut them at 45 degree or 90 degree angles at the long end of the cage and then I'll run straight paper towel tubes along the side of the aquarium until one side reaches about 2 1/2" inside his house and then on the other long side of the aquarium I'll run long paper towel tubes until there is about 6"s of space where he can take a right and enter the main play area and his disc or he can keep walking straight and enter the entrance on the side of his house. ( i forgot to add that after I lay the tubing, I throw the extra 5 inches of bedding over it so line no light gets into the tubes at all and they are completely submerged by the shavings) I know their vision isn't the best, and I haven't 100% confirmed in any way, but especially by seeing him enter one end of the tubing and exit out of the other. He is a really skittish hamster and I don't know if he's afraid to go all the way into the tubing where it gets dark and walk around the 2 corners that I have made for him and then see him walk out of the other end of it that goes into his house. So having said all of that, will hamsters not go into tunnels and tubes if they are too dark for them to see out of the other sides. i have ran tubes all along the long length of the aquarium, and he's gone through those more times than i can count, but there's always a big bright light at the end of the tunnel, or at least enough light that he can see he's going to end up in his house at the other end. But as I've said, I haven't witnessed him run the entire gamut yet with the corners and loop back around. I thought he would have loved the shit out of it, but apparently not??? I don't know how deep and far they burrow in the wild. Like if they dig deep and long tunnels with different rooms for napping, bathroom, food hoarding, and flood rooms if it rains a lot in the wild. Any info would be great!!!!! Thanks, Kenneth
ive had my hamster for about a year and a half, i bought it cause my son wanted one. i had like 5 hamsters when i was a kid and into my teens and NEVER has a single issue with ANY of them. ive have syrians ive had dwarf hamsters and another breed as well. i NEVER had a problem with them in my youth but this dwarf hamster will NOT just fucking chill and trust me, he will ONLY come to take a treat out of my fingers if its a REALLY good treat like a mealworm or a piece of cheese. he wont do it for seeds or anything else. i NEVER EVER did anything to harm, scare, injure, or make him uncomfortable. i let him sleep all day i dont wake him, i put inches of pine shavings in with tubes for tunnels he has a nice disc to run on i put inches of recycled paper in the last 3rdd of his cage with a nice house for him to sleep in with multiple entrances in and out of his house i always give him tunnels and ways to escape from me if i go to put something in his cage while hes awake cause i know hes scared. i dont know what it is, or if petco employees treat their hamsters like shit while they are cleaning the cages or something but ive been as patient as one can be with him, ive had his cage lower to the floor, and raised it up on top of my bureau so he doesnt see my giant shadow over him like a bird of prey or cat is coming to eat him, when i do try to take him out he wont bite me or anything but he will not take treats from me and any food he has in his pouches he will push out, he wont even take the meal worm when hes out and he fucking LOVES them, i dont really notice him shaking but hes definitely not at peace either. it fucking sucks man, by the time... IF i do even get him to calm down enough for him to crawl into my hand, hes probably going to pass away within 3 to 6 months and itll suck cause me and my son will have never had any quality time with him. idk, i do everything i can to let him know that im knot going to hurt him or anything, but nothing works. i almost feel like putting a fucking benzo in his water bottle to calm him down. i feel bad that this little guy has a such an anxious life when theres no reason for him to have one. like my son wanted one to play with and hes only gotten to pay with the thing like 6 times in the year and a half that weve had him. hes just too skittish. if hes out drinking or grabbing a treat i left in his food dish and i walk into my room hell fucking BOLT as soon as he hears the door open or my walk by. he bolts like SO dramatically, i mean hell fucking kick up the shaving and head for the tube to his house and sometimes hell panic so badly hell miss the tube entirely and ill lok and hell be like squished in between and underneath the paper towel tube and the side of the aquarium i keep him in. ill look at him and be like damn dude.....what happened to you before i met you man? i feel awful i dont know what to do to calm him down. it fucing sucks dude i feel SO badly for him.
Thank you, there aren't that many videos about the chewing toys produced by this brand. I bought the one with the shape of a cheese, it took some time but my syrian hamster seems to love it.
Ya having the right tools and materials definitely makes doing this a million times easier. Though I've managed to scrounge up enough scrap wood from other projects and bought some more bamboo sticks for the legs, im still struggling to get my legs even and not wobbly...driving mw made I keep sanding and sanding and theyre now like almost 2 inches shorter than ide planned, started with.
this is helpful, I don’t really go near my hamster as she’s super scared and will run away or flinch even if I’m not near her, she did have a hamster in the same cage as her in the pet store and she was always bullied. I held a treat in my fingers and she trusted me enough to take it 🥰
What if you’ve already tried taming them the wrong way.. I thought you’re supposed to try to pet him or pick him up to tame him now he’s scared. Would this work still?
Unfortunately I had to resort to getting my hamster at Petsmart because there are no rescues, or breeders in my area at all or even within 100 miles from me. He is adorable but I honestly don't believe he will ever trust me or be tame. I am happy to give him a massive enclosure with all sorts of stuff for enrichment. At least I can do my best to give him a good life.
❌ det är faktiskt fel man ska inte göra sånt är det dina hamstrar men jag har tre hamster och två kaniner de blev bana till mig bara på en dag mina Halmstad❌
I was very discouraged by my hamsters behavior and my inability to help them not be afraid. This video gave me the confidence to try a bit harder and longer to gain their trust
i made a big mistake haha, i placed my hand in the cage, i already washed my hand but the smell from my food was still in my hand, the food has very strong odor hahah i forgot to smelled my hand first before going in the cage, my hamster found something strage with my hand and she started to scared and skittish wont come out from hide out to play and observed her cage :)
my hamster cage has a lot of hiding spots, and he is usually in one of them, how can i do this method if he's always under the substrate or hiding away? can he even tell im there?
If I were you, I would add more bedding to your enclosure, since they naturally basically live underground. He needs to be able to burrow :) if it’s possible for you to add more, go ahead and do!
I have never had a robo before so it's my first time, she energetic and seems to enjoy the back of my hand more. She eats from my hand carefully. She really small and it's weird as I've never had a fearful hamster before.
Sorry, but hamsters don't feel uncomfortable living in a large cage. For hamsters, whether it be a variety of dwarf hamsters or a Syrian, the principle works in the selection of housing, the more the better. Of course, Ikea detolf makes very good cages for keeping hamsters, quite suitable in size, but this size 120x40 is not the limit, there are even more, much more. Some people keep hamsters in teriums of at least 200 x 40-100 and even 200 cm, and apparently, the hamsters are happy. So it is not necessary to divide the ikea detolf into two parts . Of course, there may not be enough space in the house to fit two shelving units made from ikea detolph, and you need to temporarily accommodate two hamsters, of course, then such a division makes sense. But otherwise, it’s better to use one rack for one hamster, it will be better for a hamster.
Now that you have his trust, you should thump and pinch attack him. You could enjoy watching how he freaks out realizing he shouldn't have trusted you to begin with. And he'd probably run off into his hiding place squealing from fear and permanent distrust of humans. Hilarious fun!
My male Syrian 2 months he was in the rescue section he is a bit nervous every time he hears me talk he comes up to the cage door❤️ I can pick him up yet but he will take treats from my hand through the playpen and he is okie me letting him. This is very helpful 🐹❤️🌸
I have 2 type of hamster Syrian and robovaski but my robovaski one of them is scare as e just arrived 3day for both robovaski which they are 6week old but one of the robovaski like me tame even while sleep
I tried this for the first 10 seconds my hamster bit me it wasn’t bad but it hurt a lot is there any other way to tame him because he kind of had trauma when I adopted him with his previous owner kind of abused him
what if it is a Russian one. I have 2 Russian hamsters one is a female and one is a male. The female is more comfortable around me but the male is still very scared. I tried to place different spots of food in my hand but he just sniffed my hand and ran away. Could you please tell me how to make him not be? Thank you!
