Hello, RU-vid! My name is Bri and I am an art hobbyist and watercolor enthusiast. I am very new to this whole recording bit, but I look forward to learning and sharing my passions with you. Thank you for stopping by! :)

I really hope it went well and you had fun! Gosh, I feel the same with digital. Wish I knew it better, but pen/ pencil on paper just feels so much more natural. Besides, traditional media is practically a niche anymore, especially at cons, and it has so much more "soul" (imo). Great job on both items!
Thank you! I fully agree, pencil on paper just feels right 🥰 Unfortunately I had to cancel the trip due to a sick kitty, so now I guess I have ribbons and stickers for next year 😅
All those cool colours on legs WOW! It's all stunning! I can't believe you managed to add so much wood detail onto such a small box 👀 and the Princess Donut's sketches are amazing as well
Everyone deserves to have a partner who is willing to share the load. <3 You seemed to imply that yours (or someone in your family) isn't pulling their weight. I hope that changes. Please never stop reminding them that you both deserve the best of each other. Best of luck, and beautiful work on this painting.
Bri, thank you for the swatching, painting and review! As helpful as it is, it would be great if you’d label the swatches so we can keep track and refer back. Thank you!
The cochineal red was re-released as a tube with the retro packaging at the same time as this set, but sold separately. There's also the slightly thicker jewel box set that has a water tank built in for painting on the go, which comes with a more traditional split primary. I think Carmine is in that one.
I do want to make a note about zoos/aquariums- not all are like seaworld. Many, like the San Diego Zoo, have set THE standard for how to do animal conservation and wildlife preservation- and if the Georgia aquarium's mission is to teach / help us understand how to care for our wildlife- they should be supported. Do your research on accreditations for zoos/aquariums and go support the ones that care! I see this rhetoric a lot online and find it puzzling as ethical zoos/aquariums are some of the only educated voices our wildlife has.
Very fair! The Georgia Aquarium is accredited and works in research, teaching, and conservation. I just still feel bad for such a large mammal to be so far inland, but I'm sure they would release them if they felt they would handle it well. Generally I'm pretty good about defending zoos because my local one does so much rehab/release and also breeding/releasing of endangered species. They just released a 375lb loggerhead turtle they helped 🥰 Sea World (Florida) also does rehab and release work, especially for manatees. Unfortunately not all of their animals have that freedom to be sent home 😞 So yes, you're absolutely correct and I appreciate you responding.
😅 I feel you! I’ve got too much paint, too, but I couldn’t resist that set either. I wish they had replaced the Yellow Ochre with a cool red like Alizarin Crimson, or Rose Madder, or even their new Chochenille red. The Raw Umber is my favourite for painting blond hair. It’s a little more transparent and less yellow than the Ochres. Love your watercolour so much, it turned out very pretty. I especially liked the way you painted the shirt.
Thank you so much! Okay, I am absolutely going to try the Raw Umber for hair - appreciate the suggestion! But yes, alizarin crimson (despite it's fugitive nature) is one of my absolute favorite colors so I agree.
Oh wow, those are tiny! Well done working on such a small scale! How about a fishy or two for the tiny sketchbook? Really enjoyed the style of your video and your voice is very nice to listen to.
That duck pallet is adorable! I've been debating those Etchr pallets but I'm afraid I'd have choice paralysis to when filling it 😢 For random animal suggestions: Malayan Tapir, Maned Wolf, Clouded Leopard
Excellent suggestions! I need to put a post it note on the sketchbook with them. The etchr palette is pretty nice but yeah, it's hard to change out colors once filled. For my last trip, I did an Art Toolkit and that one has magnetic pans and less choice paralysis 😅
Hey, it's just awesome you were able to do this despite the lack of energy or desire to paint. I was going to suggest attempting a glaze over the sky until you said you were completely over it. 😆 Good luck with the large-scale piece. Perhaps just start a bit at a time when you can/ feel up to it, so it doesn't feel overwhelming? Or, if you're set on the alla prima method, do a loose test run just to see how you feel with the scale? Good work on this one!
Thank you! I might go back to it at some point so we'll see. For a larger watercolor piece, it will take me a long time. For oils.. I kind of like the idea of having something big building on the canvas. So I need to learn patience 😅
Beautiful as always! Ehm ehm you're not the only one about the doctor stuff, I don't trust mine to not send me unnecessarily to all kinds of specialists like last time so I just...did not show up again oops Thunderstorms ans storm in general are like...never ending here, it's been weeks!
I love the texture that brush leaves and that lighting is *chef's kiss. When I saw the yellow at the beginning I was like...uh oh despite knowing it would turn out great 😆
I’ve started just leaving my oil brushes in a jar of safflower oil and wipe clean before the next session 😂 I clean them with Masterson’s soap and rinse with warm water once a week max. If I want to put more effort I’ll use conditioner to reshape.
The oil doesn't cause any issues? 🤔 I know leaving brushes in water can degrade the glue holding the bristles in faster buuuuuut this sounds way more doable. Thank you! Time to get safflower oil...
Thank you so much! Most of the background is Venetian Red + Ultramarine Intense, which is both purple-y and granulating.. and then added some Shadow Grey to the second mix. Shadow Violet is super pretty and I may replace Shadow Grey with it in the future.
I love Daniel Smith! Still slowly building up my palette, I have about 38 colors-trying to reach 48 to fill my palette. Also, you can still use your greens!Just tone them down with a complementary color or neutral tint. It is always easy to tone colors down, but it is harder to mix vibrant, punchy colors.
Just curious - do you have a favorite Daniel Smith paint? It is definitely harder to mix those full saturation colors but I just tend to never use full saturation greens. I should challenge myself to a painting that does that, though. I generally mix my own with smaller palettes.
if youtubers who pretty much only do reviews/unboxings/etc sponsorships I tend to unsub because I don't want to support that for sure. If a channel is mostly painting then I'm ok with it.
No way I am buying this. I just dislike the hipped items especially when you know the properties are not great. I work hard for my money. So no thank you Schminke.
@@briwidmerart 90 percent of art youtube is just hoarding lol. Hardly anyone actually paints or draws with the stuff besides swatching lmao. I keep trying to find more channels that focus on the painting but everyone is just BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY. It's nice to see when people actually put the stuff to use and don't toss it to the side to be forgotten in a 'stash'.
Must please the great algorithm 😆 I know I have way more than I need but I do try to rotate through my supplies and share with friends. The stash bums me out. Must give the stash love.
"Why did I buy this? ... No self-control..." LMAO 😂. I have the same disease. I bought the full set as soon as I saw NEW and SCHMINCKE. Trying them out myself. I also just succumbed to buying 30 new gouache from the new colors of the Daniel Smith line. Work Bonuses and money from Etsy shop mean I added to the economy. SMH 😅
🤣 Thank you for understanding me 💙 I have resisted the urge on the Daniel Smith gouache so far, but that was super difficult! But major congratulations on work bonus plus Etsy sales!!
Gouache can be so tricky with the dry shift and reactivation. I've gotten better since way back here, but using a soft brush and working more water to more gouache (transparent to opaque) help me a lot with both layering and blending.
