I wondered for years after this song came out if Tommy was going through a breakup, or divorce, maybe Paul Raven or the drummer was and helped write the lyrics, or what inspired this. I worked my ass off in many ways to make $$ from age 6 to 18, good grades, a few small scholarships, but was approved for next to nothing in student loans, graduated h.s. in 1993. My life basically ended when I couldn't continue college, I knew what I was good at & interested in, but no opportunities. But I always had work ethic. I worked 6 or 7 days a week ths next 10 years. Depressed as hell, and sui****l, no point is dating to get married. Life was already pointless to me at age 17, despite my boss telling me he named his newborn after me, and that he was trying to live vicariously through me. This song was new when i was 21. Great song, but over time the lyrics got to me, would get to cry. So much of this song......"our prime time used up too soon". Hits home every time, it describes my feelings exactly. Destroyed my lower back at 29, my shoulder the year before. Now 20 years later, still trying to drag this useless corpse around. Ready for it to be over. But I can enjoy any of these kick ass songs now 🤘🤘🤘 even if the lyrics are depressing (nobody hears by ST, a bunch by Alice In Chains), because I don't effing care at this point 😂😂😂
I wonder who the woman hanging upside down, her gown covering her features, is to Leonard. Perhaps it was just a symbolic dream. It's just so specific.
Oliver Stone & Tarentino got this song bang on as the end credits for Natural Born Killers. Was released in 92, two years before the film... What a piece of art and a directorial masterpiece that film is... If you've been living on the moon & haven't seen it, you really should give it a shot!!!
Wow!! Leonard Cohen is brilliant & after all these years still going strong. Great music, lyrics & vocals. Many incredible well worth checking out.. only be repeating most of them. SUPER WOW @ AWESOME job!!!
