Hi! I’m Tice. I’m a guy who just loves adventure. And this channel is basically an insight in all the various adventures I go on! I used to be an avid cyclist. Cycling through a whopping 13 countries in Europe back in 2017 and 2018. Then I did a working holiday in Australia for a year and traveled through South-East Asia for a couple months. And after the pandemic I didn’t stop traveling, hitting places like Svalbard, Gran Canaria, and doing a Chinese Mandarin study in Taiwan. On the side I’m also adventuring into web development and building cool and fun applications that I hope to build out into my own business. I plan to share parts of that journey as well on here. Thank you for clicking on my channel and I hope you enjoy the videos I put on here. On to more adventures!

Sounds to me like you actually needed a recumbent trike, where you can go at any speed, without any risk of losing balance. Given a gear low enough, you can get up any mountain, just not as fast. A recumbent bike, especially one fully loaded, especially since you are using front wheel panniers, is tricky in the mountains where speeds are very low and thus balance is harder. The issue is that you can't move your upper body to provide counter weight, that makes that you mainly have steering to provide balance. Steering is already harder on a recumbent due to the long arm requiring a lot of motion compared to an upright bike and the front paniers certainly aren't working, they are a terrible idea on any recumbent, instead use under seat panniers.

Recumbent bikes are ergonomically wrong! Here's why: Stand straight and lift one leg. Now sit down on a chair and stick one leg out horizontally. Move that stretched leg up and down and feel how much more muscle power it takes and how much more fatiguing it is compared to the vertical leg lift. Resting your feet on the bike paddles does not make any difference. Pure physiology!

Hi, to confirm - is there a train from Chiayi to Hualien and how can I book/check the timetable. Planning to take in Nov this year, thanks in advance!
@TravelingTice
@TravelingTice 4 месяца назад
Ahh you'd have to go all the way north to Taipei or south to Kaohsiung. We took the train from Chiayi north and then bending south east into Yilan and then Hualien.. took over 6 hours, you could also take the high-speed rail from Chiayi to Taipei then change to what they call the "Tzeqiang" or 自強 in Chinese. High-speed rail station in Chiayi is a 20 min drive outside the city though so you'd need a taxi to get there if you stay in the city. Let me know if you have any other questions! But no need to book very far in advance I think!
@rdejoya
@rdejoya 4 месяца назад
Ah gotcha. Yeah the direct one did look slower on the directions I’ve seen online. I’ll look into the HSR option which changes at Taipei. Thanks!

You need to unlearn various riding habits from a diamond frame to a recumbent. Lower gears before stopping as you do not have the ability to stand up and counter balance a recumbent , Clipped in as you need to spin at a higher cadence , tight corners may require you to lift your heel to avoid heel/ front tire interference, and it will take some time before you are capable of slow speed balance and tight corners with confidence. Speed up hills will be slower unless you train for it. Overall a recumbent will be far more comfortable than any diamond frame with the most expensive bike fit possible. As to buying a recumbent , buy USED not new as the first one is not going to be the last one and the money you save buying used can go towards replacing what parts you want to make it functional;. I replaced the gearing on my recumbent from a triple 26-36-48 to a double 22-42 as I require lower gears for loaded touring and I have 9 gears for cruising around town . I do not switch the front back and forth as a diamond bike or other recumbent riders may do. 9 speeds for long uphill slogs loaded and 9 for everything else. I have a lower low and a lower high gear as I just can not spin my average cadence of 85-90 rpm in a high gear so why have it. A diamond frame bike is basically the same design since 1934 when recumbents were banned from racing. Recumbents can be short , medium , long wheelbase, with above seat, or below seat steering, front wheel drive, or rear wheel drive . Each recumbent has it's own attributes . My Giro A 20 touring recumbent is number 10 of 12 bents so far . Taking into account some of those attributes of other bents led me to doing some changes to what my needs are and the only different parts on a recumbent are the seats or the steering , everything else is road or mountain bike parts. You need at least three weeks on any recumbent to actually feel the difference.

I did that same trip in 2007, 2 years before they horribly painted all the boats white. Looks like double the traffic now. Even back then they had the filthiest air anywhere, from all the diesel engines. Still got a bad sunburn thru clouds that day. The guy with me in the kayak was useless. I paddled us around one of the islands. In 2014 I just rode my bike by there and stayed 2 rainy day/nights. Rode over that bridge 5 times actually. LOL. That was in the middle of my tour. Rode 900 miles to DaFang then took the bus over a frozen mountain to Chengdu for a nine week stay.
