Hot Buttered - established 1971 - Surfing, Shaping, Board Manufacturing around all oceans.

HB founder Terry Fitzgerald was among the surfer/craftsmen of the 1970s and ‘80s pioneering faster short-board and mini-gun surfing with hand shaped designs that reflected the experiences of his professional surfing career and distinctive style honed at international surf breaks.

TF’s hand shaped Rainbow Surfboards infused with the timeless airbrush art of Martyn Worthington marked a new era for the surfing industry.

Now spanning nearly 50 years of product development and technology evolution, Hot Buttered supports local and international cross-surf disciplines, events and sponsorships of professional riders and ambassadors in surfing, bodyboarding and skateboarding.

Terry is not given the credit here for his superb shaping. and surfboard design development. I worked with JR when he was glassing most Brewers and Hawks, and Terry was on the bleeding edge of design. Brewer told me, if memory serves, the modern surfboard rail came from the time Dick, Reno and Terry spent on Kauai. The thin turned down wings on ppintails that Reno and Terry were riding at Sunset were probably the fastest of the whole single fin era. Who was riding these has much to do with the speed, as the two were the speed masters of their generation. My personal copies of the design unleashed speed I'd not felt before. Terry's backside at Rocky Point with his 'screwdriver' boards was decades more advanced than most. Like big square tails, with big shark bites out of each corner. The winger concept taken to it's extreme? Terry;s love of artwork on the boards disguised the shaping for most, IMO. Both shapes and artwork were industry leading.

I remember an image of Wayne when he was at Bells from way back in 197? ( not sure) . He was at the top of the heap in pro surfing back then but still an 'underDog" which made me like him more . He was carrying a board with "the dog" sprayed on the bottom graffiti style . He was so cool . He absolutely ripped . The cutback he pulls in this video at 1:08 is still an elite turn by any measure . RIP Mr Deane .

Sorry to say I didn't appreciate the genius of T. Fitz in '72. He was far too advanced for my limited understanding. Looking again, he is among my favorite surfers of that period. So committed, on edge, creative, and stylish. Best style. Not a learned affectation of standing tall and doing nothing at all, but moving with the wave. Only meant him once. In 1973 at his shop. He had a grinder in his hand and I told him his boards were beautiful, which I only half believed at the time. He smiled and said, "We have fun."

I agree, it's like using the wave for a magic carpet ride instead of using lines to tear the wave apart. Watch Torren Martyn, he's a modern surfer with an amazing throwback soul style who blends everything very well.
