You picked two of the best Doctor Who adventures...they never age ..unlike the current Who....they both hit the ground running and show how good the show can be ..
I was born in May 1970, so I'm almost as old as the transmitted Spearhead From Space. I didn't see it, though, until this abridged VHS release came out. I knew about the Doctor being exiled, but it was so wonderful to actually see it at last, and the Autons. I was seven when The Robots of Death originally broadcast and recall walking around the school playground, arms outstretched chanting, "Kill the humans." I didn't see it again until the VHS release, which I watched ... to death.
Billy: Dont tell them what we did agnes. 3rd doctor: Im not agnes im the doctor. Now put that crystal unicorn down old chap. Or ill use venusian aikido on your ass my young man.
Excluding the specials, I personally cannot stand Series 8. It's the only one I really can't bring myself to watch anymore. Apart from catching odd episodes, I think I've only sat through the whole thing maybe twice. The whole tone of it just feels completely at odds with the previous 7. I don't know if Doug Naylor or the production team was trying to make it more appealing to a younger audience or something, but there seems to be a strong emphasis on overt silliness in Series 8... Silly faces, silly voices, silly walks and silly costumes etc, at the expense of the more character driven comedy in Series 1 to 7. Series 7 did have a bit of that going on, but they really seemed to go all out with it in S8. The newer episodes are an improvement, although I think there's still something missing. It feels like the characters have all been dumbed down somehow... Take for example the whole running gag of the Lister father/son, back and forth thing in Fathers and Suns. That kind of unironic craziness is just not the sort of thing I could ever imagine the Dave Lister of Series 1 to 7, or even Series 8 doing at any point...
I'm glad that I mostly watched Home and Away on RTE growing up. RTE was months ahead of ITV and they never cut anything from the show. I vaguely remember this storyline, but I was about 8 when it was showing. If there was a kiss, RTE definitely wouldn’t have cut it. I remember reading something years ago that when they were filming these sort of storylines years ago, they did actually include more detail, but before it was broadcast Channel Seven had to make the decision whether or not to air scenes or dialogue that may be offensive to the audience, which is why some things don’t make a lot of sense or seem ridiculously implied. Although they were able to cover a lot of adult-themed storylines without a lot if fuss, which included affairs, teen pregnancy, anorexia, drugs, murder etc., very few, such as gay characters, rape and suicide were only implied, although the sexual assault of Chloe in the mid-'90s was actually very well written, despite the fact that the word "rape" had to be cut before going to air. They repeated this issue in 2001 when Dani Sutherland was "attacked" by Kane Phillips. Tammin Sursok who played Dani mentioned that the storyline contained a lot more detail until it was cut by the channel before broadcast. More recently in the 2019/2020 storyline with Willow and Alex, Channel Seven edited scenes of kissing, which aired uncut in other countries.
I am always perplexed by the term " Modern Audience " because that seems to be the excuse for the way TV and Film programmes are produced.....but hang on weren't things made for a modern audience back in the day ...or were we so different in the 70s and 80s...I notice that Dads Army when shown on Saturday on the BBC pulls in an audience of nearly a million so was that made for a modern audience ??? ...
RTD did those in memory of for his show It’s A Sin because it was centred around AIDS and Dursley McLinden in Remembrance of the Daleks died from it so I suppose it’s a tribute video. I think Russell needs to be on behind the sofa, he needs to watch what he is, forget it, look what he did to Sutekh so I don’t think he should be 5 miles from classic who, his creativity is what he should rely on and let’s see how long he’ll last. I watched Silver Nemesis, very underrated. October? I hoped August or early September.
Got my pre order in! Looking forward to the updated effects as you know! I do feel silver and remembrance needed updated effects. Greatest show's original effects were already great imo.
My Blockbuster was right next to a kebab house....I can still smell the food...but going to a video store was a serious way to spend time and to chat with other customers that remain friends today...ahh the memories..
Thanks for the shout out! My eyes lit up when I saw the video title! You know I tend to prefer the updated effects myself, though there are a couple I prefer the original effects like planet of the Daleks. Interestingly enlightenment has gotten updated effects twice, the season 20 set had even newer updated effects, but yeah the original effects are great for it. I like most of the time warrior effects, but yeah, the explosion at the end is awful. Day of the Daleks is one of the best updated effects for me, though a few were not needed like the future city. I do like that they fixed Davros’ voice in destiny though. Loved most of the updated effects for fang rock myself. Though the original effects are fine honestly. Terror of the autons was great as it’s more just fixing the bad stuff like the cso as you say. The updated snake on kinda is much better imo.
No worries mate. ;) As I say I'm less hardline on them than some things as they are just optional, so it's just personal taste whether I watch them or not.
I think it can be a bit deceptive. Babelcolour did one of those celebrating 50 years where he did a Doctor Who story video An Unearthly Child to Time. When Kinda came in the video, the cgi Mara came, so when I saw the actual Mara, I'm like where's the cleaner snake? There are some which do work- Timelash and some laser beams but there are times when I want to make it look realistic, the 2024 Rutan design- go save that for a modern series- it doesn't looks way above and unsuitable for the late 70s.
Sorry but Lana ruined the show for me and many others Lana should have been written out after after season 4 most of the time they make it look like Lana didn't even like Clark
Might as well give a list of my own since Classic Who as a whole I can enjoy as comfort TV or on its own merits. City of Death Greatest Show in the Galaxy Black Orchid The Romans The Gunfighters The Chase Keeper of Traken The Highlanders (I have very fond memories probably because this really got me into the old Reconstructions and kept me thoroughly entertained) The Happiness Patrol Attack of the Cybermen The Three Doctors Invasion of the Dinosaurs The Sun Makers Horror of Fang Rock Planet of Giants The Moonbase There's a lot more now that I've given it some thought about comfort Who stories I enjoy, but that should be enough for the only version of the show that counts.
This video got me thinking, great choices by the way. Here are mine: Terror of the Zygons Robots of Death Ark in Space Pyramids of Mars Day of the Daleks Carnival of Monsters Ghost light The Greatest show in the Galaxy Mawdwyn Undead Spearhead from Space 👌
I haven't watched much classic who in two years barring the Christmas, Easter, New Year I suppose the ones that have been treated as comfort in the past would be Inferno, Terror of the Autons, Three Doctors, Day of the Daleks, Planet of the Spiders- that's Pertwee alone. Davison, I suppose Warriors- you know stereotypical cheap sci-fi but keeping it serious, Curse of Fenric and Paradise Towers. A fraction of the Hartnell era: Marco, Aztecs, Romans, Time Meddler, Celestial, War Machines, Tenth Planet. Underwater Menace. Attack of the Cybermen.
I remember chatting with a guy about OFITG who absolutely couldn't stand Victor because "all he does is complain". The whole point of Victor is that he's reacting to the growing insanity of modern life - being "replaced by a box" at his job, the crumbling NHS, the abuse of care home patients, the decline in public civility, and of course all the crazy stuff that just seems to happen to him personally. He never complained for the sake of it; he had very good reason. There's that great episode 'Warm Champagne', in which Margaret says she loves Victor precisely because he cares so much about the world. I rewatched it all again a couple of years ago and that pathos is still so powerful, and so wonderfully blended with humour. Can't imagine a series like it being made now.
What was Russell T Davies' crime? He murdered Chris Eccleston. What? Oh. Rusty was less concerned for the reputation of Doctor Who than he was with his sordid affair with Ncuti Gatwa. And so Ncuti deserved to die too? Well was turning into Jodie Whittaker. JODIE WHITTAKER.
7. Sensorites 6. The Edge of Destruction 5. An Unearthly Child/Reign 4. The Reign of Terror/An Unearthly Child- I don't know which one to like, episode 2 of AUC gets too much hate. Just because you see a caveman doesn't mean the episode just plummetted. 3. The Daleks 2. The Aztecs- Cor blimey, not the perversion of NuWho, did you see the way he reacted to the engagement! 1. Marco Polo Gonna watch Keys this summer.
@@codyw1 Watched Keys, I think it's better than an Unearthly Child. Yes the first three episodes like the latter half of the Screaming Jungle is rather slow but the latter half is nice in my opinion.
