A great combination of using the land. Upland bird hunting for food and backyard greenhouse and chickens for fruit, vegetable and egg production. 1977 Airstream Argosy living.
I take it where most don't take their Airstreams...off the pavement...Forest roads and in the wilderness off grid. I needed more ground clearance. It tows like a dream.
Matt, I'm a minimalist. I hunt with a 28 gauge SxS. I have a mostly orange strapless vest that has a bird bag on the back 2 "D" rings and 2 pockets....period. I appreciate your take on this vest as a guide that keeps himself in top shape running down scalies day-in, day-out, but if you supply that vest to "most of your clients" you will need that first aid kit, for them! The upside is the versatility inherent to this vest. It can strip down to accommodate AS LITTLE or as much as is actually required specific to the needs/palate of the general audience. The determining factor for me - I'm 69 and train bird dogs, so I do a fair bit of walking although not near as much as you do - is the weight of the vest EMPTY. Some vests weigh like 2 boxes of 12 gauge shells+ empty!?! Getting fatigued prematurely OR not making it back to your truck can be a bigger issue than running around carrying the kitchen sink. Critical criteria for me are (I hunt ON grouse/woodcock, AZ quail, KS quail/pheasant/chicken, SK Huns/sharptails, ID chukar/valley quail) hemostats, shotshells, my Garmin 200 GPS, wallet, phone, 2 bottles of water for the dogs. That's plenty for me and my dog(s) for the morning stint. I plan to be back at the truck in 2-3 hours so I don't need anything else. Again, I respect that you are running a professional business. As such, your widespread needs are specific to that vocation. Thank you for the comprehensive assessment Sir and, happy hunting! Nice to see you and to have you donate a hunt for the SAQF cause!
Thanks for the video. I grew up in AZ and used Lewis boots on my springers way back when. Never had a problem. Now all these years later I'm hunting chukar in NV with a setter and every time I've tried to use them they come off. I think the problem is that it's super cold and snowy and the tape is brittle and gets wet. Going to try your method cuz my dogs feet are getting destroyed every time we go out.
Thank you! Yes, built in check valve. I installed the ball valve shut off for safety measures. I'm sure it's redundant. Subscribe please if you haven't already.
Great info! I don’t know much about pex but I should replumb my 1972 Argosy. I have the same floor plan but interestingly, there are several differences. Mine came from the factory with water heater under the kitchen sink, city water supply is on the body underneath by the rear bumper, and looks like your black water drain is in a different spot.
Interesting indeed. I've seen water heaters under sink in the 60s models. I have no idea why Airstream would place the water supply next to the waste water dump. Hence my relocation of it. Thanks for the reply! Subscribe please if you haven't already.
Do you have to take an old axle to Dexter for them to take measurements? The original axles on my 1976 Argosy are rated at 2800 lbs. Thinking I could go up to 3000-3500 lbs on the new ones.thanks for the great video!
I never dealt with Dexter. I sent one axle to Wheel Equipment in Tucson. You can also call them and they'll send you a form for you to fill out with specific measurements. Name drop this video...they know me well. They have great customer service! Correct...the old Henshen axles were rated around 2600-2800lbs. Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already.
as we approach dove and quail season, can you provide any tips for dogs paw care? Im going to buy the "Mushers Secret" product on a recommendation, but was curious what you do to protect your dogs paws in the Arizona climate. Im asking because we are in West Texas and will experience similar conditions. Sandy soil and hardpack, lots of sharp rocks, stickers, sand burs, yucca, cactus etc. Do you run dog boots? or let them run and build up a tough pad to resist issues and use mushers? Any advice appreciated....thanks!
Hello! I'm glad you found the video useful. The axles and lift kit came from Wheel equipment in Tucson AZ. All hardware comes with it. Call them and name drop me. They know this video very well 😉
I did not. Reason 1: Warranty would be voided by Dexter if you weld shock brackets on the axle. Reason 2: The ride is so smooth with the Torflex axles and their shock self dampening rubber I haven't found shocks necessary nor do they seem to be recommended by Dexter. On or off road, it tows the a champion. No wheel bounce or roll on rough or curvy roads. I'd love to hear your opinion, experience or feedback. Thanks for watching.
@@ArgosyMan Nice, I've got the lift on order but i'm not doing new axles so i'll be re installing the shocks somehow. I picked up a 77 argosy and it's like a time capsule, everything origional and working. For now will lift it and paint the outside.
Nice video! There was some discussion I saw on Airforums I think that revolved around an issue someone had when the placed the blown tire back into the tire carrier. The space between the V is such that if just a rim with minimal rubber is left, it will fall through the bottom and damage the trailer bottom. Someone had modified theirs to include extra metal tubing to prevent a lone rim from falling through.
Thank you. I saw that thread also. A little common sense would not allow me to place a blown tire in that large of an area under the belly. I bet it was scary though!
Hi Matt from the UK this bag looks like just the badger I’m looking out for , weird question but do you think I would be able to carry my old West highland white terrier dog in it as he still likes to come out with me and the boys but gets tired . Cheers from another Mat
Hello! Yes it'd fit a terrier. The owner of Marsupial actually sat inside the cargo area of the vest and was carried around at their shop to show strength and quality of stitching. Cheers, indeed!
Great video Matt. I have been interested in this vest since it came out. I work at a lodge in South Dakota guiding pheasant hunter. We hunt 1/4 - 1/2 mile long food plots. However depending on the clients and how they are hitting we could end up carrying 10-15 sometimes more pheasants till we dump them at the end of the field. This vest has a lot more features in pocketing on the bag than we need but looks like it has pretty good capacity. Would you say it could hold (10) pheasants? Thanks again for the video.
Thanks Andy. I'd say that it'd hold 10 pheasants. You might have to get creative on how they'd stack in there but the basket style cargo is quite large. Do you need help guiding? 😉 Feel free to email me through my site.
do you prefer this or the upland chief? Im a new upland hunter, and am looking for better options for carrying gear, amo gun and birds. Also....any chance we can get a video on that K9 first aid kit?
Hello! Each of the vests have their pro features. Out west, this vest is a bit cooler on warm days. I just shot the 1stAidK9 video yesterday but it was too windy. I'll try again tomorrow. Thank you for asking.
Can we get a video of the k9 first aid kit please. I found your channel while researching that upland vest. As a new gun dog owner I’m looking for an all in one first aid kit for the dog and me that isn’t too big or heavy for hunting use. This may be just what I’m looking for. Thanks and merry Christmas.
Just bought my chief upland and love it because of your first review! Excited to kick off quail season this year with it! Just recently was out for archery deer and that vest works pretty good for that. Have you checked out the marsupial gear upland bird vest? Maybe an arizona company can make Arizona proof products, who knows haha. I'm thinking about grabbing it and running one for bird and the other for archery.
Thanks! If you look at the lift block from Dexter, it's shorter than the span of the original holes in the Argosy frame. Hence having to drill the hold to match the lift block. Each axle is slightly forward with plenty of room for articulation if need be.
@@thomaspayne8567 Other than my wife unloading the axles from the flatbed trailer with me and wheeling them under the Airstream, I did the entire project myself. No joke. Thanks again for the compliments.
Matt is an excellent guide and is in the field every day during the hunting season. If he recommends gear, it's been well tested and is worth checking out. Great review!
