This is the version that was used to placate Christian settlers and Fijian Christians of the time. Vosoti yau sara turaga ni tukuni ia na iseru e sega ni vu ni nona mate o Baker. Baker died because of his involvement in the manipulation of tribal warfare which contributed in massacres of women and children. Burned alive in their villages. Parts of this video is true, such as when the Chief was asked to kill him before he arrived. But it was NOT for the feasting of his flesh. Cannibalism in well formatted tribes in Fiji rarely ate humans simply for the taste if ever. They were eaten to cleanse the world of the offenders (bakola's) 'evils'. That is why the usage of the word is as such, "Oe! Bakola levu na nomu itovo!" The connection of 'itovo' to bakola signifies that the noun bakola is connected to a previous act. It's not simply a noun of someone about to be eaten. Some Bakola were not eaten but simply killed. We know all this not only from geological evidence (rampant cannibalism would be visible in many human bones with teeth and eating tool marks, breaking in pieces for marrow, etc, which we find many evidence for in animals (speaking worldwide). Also, from native documentation of our acts vs the visitor documentation of their perspectives. Foreigners sensationalize what they see and exaggerate. This is well documented. Very well documented. It is a common behaviour today as well. Just ask any Jone or Mere when they get back from the USA, "io, vadomobula saraga, keitou sa bau curuma sara tu ga na bula ni bla bla bla - vaka ga na yaloyalo." When we actually go we realize its not that 'amazing'. Read any article from a tourist on their travels in Fiji. "I met a guy that says Fijians still eat people in secret.. bla bla bla..." This is very common. Our problem (as a whole) in Fiji is our need for alignment to Christianity. So we accept and propagate absolute nonsense against our very ancestors. Ancient Fijians fought a holy war against the lotu. Imagine people coming with guns to kill you. Convert? Please, that was a slow military process to use less ammunition and keep enough people for labour as the land was raped. Just read about how the Fiji roads were built, Fijians lay dead under the very roads we drive through daily. Entire villages were lost as no men were left (because they had to pay their tax via road work). And they were worked to the death. It came to the point were Sir A Gordon forced the system to change or Fijians "Would die out." Why where Indians brought to Fiji? Because they were already in the system of the British for hundreds of years. Easy to control, don't know the jungles. Then the British made sure Indians were scared to leave the plantations because "Fijians might eat you." As they enslaved the Indians in the plantations, they locked Fijians in the villages. Fijians were not allowed to leave their villages up until the 1920s. You required a pass and only for a few nights. If you're a woman, forget about leaving the village.
