Peterson. No. Students must learn how to critically evaluate various discourses. People should do more and speak less. Don’t insist with this bullshit. I read one piece written by you and, because I am naturally inclined to be kind, I choose to treat it like a piece of poetry, not an argument because it would look like a Swiss cheese that is the product of an ill cow and a farmer who was drunk when he made it. How are they supposed to "critically" evaluate a specific topic? It requires an individual to think. Why should they think? In order to make an informed decision or action. But not everything we think is correct or the perfect answer for a specific problem. So now how do we then improve our thinking? Through writing. And how is writing supposed to help in our thinking? Through writing down our raw ideas, testing our ability to communicate them in our own words, and addressing the existing strengths and weak points of our ideas which in return help us to communicate our ideas to the world to influence and persuade people as well as develop our critical thinking skills with the help of writing. Yes, there are other alternatives available to exercise in evaluating other ideas but writing remains a fundamental practice in confronting your unexamined beliefs and ideas which is challenging as it requires a lot of effort for most people. Do not mistake creating a comment or post on social media at the same level as 'writing' as it is not often done for the purpose of improving our thinking rather it is leaning towards more in expressing our emotions without critically thinking over it. "People should do more and speak less." Both action and speaking are equally important in dealing with our everyday problems without communication how can you supposed to do your job well, complete your responsibility, or even help people in general without well-coordinated instruction which includes writing or speaking, instruction changes every day based of current demands of our world or environment. Supposed we speak less how will you strategically achieve your objectives as a leader in a big organization if your coworkers or team members do not have the same idea as yours based on your philosophy of less speaking or if their actions do not align with your target goals due to inadequate of communication well I doubt you will just order them to memorize it and be done with it. If you have a better solution for this then feel free to share.
I can see in the future people will do a lot less thinking as AI evolves and people will be able to use it to do their thinking for them. Decision making will be handed over to AI. This will make things easier, quicker, more efficient and produce better results. It will also make people and their experiences less useful and therefore less valuable. Their lives will have less meaning and not much purpose.

I had an epiphany during grad school and wrote this in my notes. “Why have we not been taught why we write? For what purpose?” And concluded that, “writing is a source of energy.” Damn…
Perhaps students are not told why it is important to learn how to write, (and read and speak) is because it keeps the masses at a disadvantage. Same reason we no longer have civic classes or anything that teaches us how politics work, how a new law is enacted or a law struck down, or how a to write a bill. I mean the closest my generation came was School House Rock and the song ""I'm just a Bill sitting on Capitol Hill". If you can't speak, write, or read and have no idea how politics and the law works you're just pretty much a sheep that can be led around.
Sounds good and is basically true, but ability to write and critically think is NOT a bullet-proof vest, and it does not make you invincible. Jordan is overstating things a bit. It does not matter how well you think and write when your group, or your boss, want you out. They have the power and you do not. Plenty of people with correct articulate arguments are fired everyday, even have their lives destroyed, for political reasons, personality conflicts, etc. etc. As you are walking out the door you ask, "Why are you doing this to me?" And the answer is the same as Henry Ford told Lee Iococca when he fired him, "Sometimes you just don't like someone."
Middle aged first time parents can consciously decide to not overprotect their offspring. Isn't it better to do it by choice than necessity (which is the case for young first time parents)? His arguments are unnecessarily vilifying/criticising a valuable section of humanity - hard working and intelligent individuals who further humanity through excellence in speacilized professions AND go on to raise a family.

This four minute video was so incredibly powerful to me. It inspired me to fight back my abuser-and win in court. I believe the American public education system has been purposely dumbing down society so there’s less resistance and no intelligent arguments pushing back. I was a local high school substitute teacher a few years ago. 90% of the students could not write a proper sentence. I would receive a full written page without ANY punctuation or capitalization. What was written was basically incoherent. It broke my heart. 😢
I'm a mathematics teacher and this is also true for the Mathematical Arts. The Pencil is the tool of the Mind. The Mathematics is the method utilized, not simply the "answer". A computation with poor method work is the same as having a conclusion with a poor argument. How do you know your conclusion is correct? The method will tell.
I'm here despite not really liking this guy (knowing a lot of legit life gurus like Vishen and Eckhart will make you realize that this guy is just spewing words everybody else could do and it would sound 'phenomenal' because he has confidence in speaking), but I clicked anyway because I wanna know the story behind the poster's notes. Alright but where do i start from ? Should i start writing about my day ? Should i write about a particular topic? How do i practice whatever he said in this video ?
really anything that cause a "recall" helps, starting from simple things like journalling can be really helpful at least for yourself (also i recommend watching healthygamer videos)
@@sansmon123 Jordan Peterson also has an essay writing guide that you can Google. It is the same one he is talking about when he mentions the "rubric" in the beginning of this video. The "rubric" breaks down the process of writing, and gives you some prompt ideas on what to write about. I highly recommend even just reading it, I found it very helpful!
The key here is "voluntarily accepting responsibility". If you accept responsibility not because it's your choice, but because "I have to" or "I have no choice" or "X needs me to do it", you'll just feel depressed. If you don't feel free to refuse, delay your answer for a few hours at least. Make sure you're mentally ready to say "no", even if doing that is not going to be in your best interests. Only after you're free to refuse, it's a good idea to start thinking about how to accept responsibility and on what conditions.
