We usually stop mid summer as we don't want the maple to be too active going into the fall as it can cause the plant to use nutrients that it needs to survive the winter!
There is a lot of terminology to Learn when it comes to Japanese maples! Hubb's Red Willow is a cultivar ( a selection of a plant picked for its unique properties) of Japanese Maple Know for its linearilobum Leaf. (a thin strap like leaf that can look Reminiscent of Bamboo Foliage)
@@JapaneseMaple to be completely fair, as a 20+ speciality nursery owner, I've never seen 'Oculus Draconis' as a cultivar other than of P. densiflora, despite Google claiming there to be a similarly named cultivar of other Pinus species.
Several national nurseries list ‘Ogon’ as the cultivar name of Gold Rush Dawn Redwood. Whatever the case may be, it surely is a great tree. I searched for one for years as soon as I became aware of its existence. I finally found a beautiful specimen at a local nursery. I have it in the perfect location and I look at it every morning, glowing like a beacon in my landscape. My favorite tree of late.
Now if I could just figure out how big this will actually get. Your site says 4 feet wide in 10 years, The Tree Center says 20 feet wide in 10 years! 😣
It sounds like it can handle a fair amount of sun. I have a location but its dappled afternoon sun, a decent amount of sun but not the crazy hottest location in my yard. Eventually...I hope there will be some more shade from the Osakazuki and Bloodgood which handle the sun fine all year.
I think alot of people make too much of it because in Bonsai design, it is a desired trait. Those people who sometimes make too much of it don't always understand that most of us are not collecting Japanese Maples for Bonsai design but are actually putting these into our gardens. With that said, you should never plant it deep.
