The Old Deer Hunters Association ( https:theolddeerhunters.com ).The ODHA was founded more than 40 years ago. Our RU-vid channel started only a few years ago and in the last year, we have begun the great adventure of night hunting with Thermal and Night Vision scopes.
We are excited to be a Prostaff member of Outdoor Legacy Gear and do regular video reviews of the newest and best thermal and night vision optics available today.
We hunt mostly in Georgia and occasionally in Missouri and other states.
Our goal is to show you some of our hog and coyote hunts with thermal optics and to help you decide which equipment will be best for you.
Lite with 10" twist. Thought about buying new 8@ twist model but I don't want to shoot anything larger than 95 SST and I don't hunt deer with it very much. It is mostly for hogs under 100 yds.
I have the Rattler 384 clip-on and it works great in front of a Sig Sauer Tango 6 3-18x44. Most of my shots are 80 to 175 yards and are easily made with this combo. I did try to set up on a hog at 352 yards with it and that was too far. I had to remove it and just use the scope in very low light but I got it done. Five minutes later and that hog would have walked.
I usually give it a twist on the paid. After a couple of cases the expander ball gets a coat of lube and you can feel the difference as you size the case.
I got one in 1986. It was used. I traded a Rem 742 for it. It was in 30-06. I thought why would anyone not like this rifle. That was until I sighted it in. Scope cut a gash between my eyes you can see to this day. Hunted with it for 15 years.
I have one that came with my press kit. It's garbage. Trying to trim 308 to 2.005" I've run it from all the way out just to see where it touches the case- it finally does at about 8 or 9 adjustment clicks. One more click (which is supposed to be 0.001") and my case could go from 2.017 to 2.010, 2.007; or could go all the way down to 2.000. it's anyone's guess. I picked up the Lyman Universal today because I've got a few cases that measure 2.005 and i can just put one of those in it, run the cutter up to it, lock it down, and be good.
In about 1990 I bought used, the same rifle. It’s a .257 Roberts. It’s a very pretty gun. But the wood does not have as pretty of figure as yours does. I love the smooth classic lines.
Image is not better but the display is much larger. The base magnification is higher so everything bigger. It sort of like watching a ballgame TV on different size screens. I sold my XP50 and bought a Bolt last year. Mine is for sale, one year old if you are interested
Great pointers! I just ordered the "Lee Precision Deluxe Trimmer" today (an upgrade of this model) and like the no-muss,no fuss aspect of this product.Besides doing case preparation all in one step,I am limited on reloading space so it is just what I need to avoid added clutter on my work bench. All the gadgets for hand-loading are wonderful tools, but as new ammo loader I strive to save time and space. This item covers brass case downsizing, chamfering and deburring all in one stage, so it' a keeper. Thanks!
I have heard that tikka has changed the twist on the .243 to 1 in 8 to allow for the longer bullets (now out to 115gr). As you know, it is not the weight of the bullet but the length of the bullet that needs stabilizing. Longer bullets do weigh more but it is the length that matters. I put a 24" pacnor barrel with a 1 in 8 twist because several types of the 100gr bullets would not group past 100yds. Hero at 100yds.......a zero at 300yds. I shoot in the west where shots are often 250+yds so once we have our zero (100 yds for me), we then go to 300 to make sure we are still accurate. The change in twist made a huge difference out to 300yds. Its interesting that tikka makes the 6mm with a 1 in 8 twist. Really liked your video format - down to earth. Keep'em coming!
Thanks for your comment. Tikka did change to 1 in 8 and they are hitting dealer shelves now. Personally, I still view the 243 as minimum for whitetails under 200 yds. I prefer 270, 7mm for long shots on large game.
I bought my dad a hunting lease for Father’s Day and im gonna buy my pops this rifle too. I have a model 70 featherweight in 308 myself that packs a punch but this xtr is really nice just classic. Is 270 too big for pops he’s 63? I’d prefer to get .243 for him but I know for fact they have 270
Great tip for an age old problem. The only way I could see a dented shoulder hurting you is if you ran a compressed load because then it could over pressurize the case.
On some of our scope and scanner reviews we have taken our dog out to 100 and 200 yards for reference. Do you think that is helpful? We compared pulsar XG50LRF and the XP50 side by side at measured distances.
Really enjoyed your video and your logic behind each cartridge. I really love the 6.5 grendel as it fits perfectly the type of hunting I do for hogs and deer. The 308 packs a lot of power but the recoil is too much compared the grendel. Thanks for sharing!
