I’ve just finished reading’16 lives, Joseph Plunkett’, my lovely rebel granddaughter is reading it now, he was a beautiful, brave, sensitive, intelligent freedom fighter. Ireland will be united sooner than later. 🇮🇪☘️
Found this in a compilation of "horror movies". Whomever added it along with a couple others is ignorant. At the end, typical hollywood libbie: "Guns BAD! Corrupt people, GOOD!" Cagney's character was right - the IRA war went on for another 50-60yrs!
We kept thinking of uncanny parallels with the current 'situation' in Palestine. Colonial occupation. Black & Tans (IDF) roaming the streets shooting at everything and anyone who moves. Brutal treatment/torture of prisoners) Hunger strikes - bravery and resourcefulness of the resistance (rolling a grenade under a troop carrier...) civilians being drawn in by choice or force of circumstance. Then a 'peace deal' which leads to more suffering (Oslo Accord). Assassination of leaders (Michael Collins/Yasser Arafat) and so much more. Cagney as ever magnetic plus veteran Sybil Thorndike, Redgrave etc. Timely and timeless.
It’s bitter sweet watching this. My Dad and Uncle were extras in it, my dads sitting by the stage enjoying the music 🎵 RIP I also didn’t realise that it was directed by Ken Loach, my favorite director ❤
As an American, I've always thought the Brits made great movies!' This one fits right up there with the other great ones! James Mason was a fantastic actor! Thanks for posting this gem from 1947!
WELL WE CAN ALL SEE WHAT SHAKING HANDS WITH THE DEVIL HAS DONE TO TODAY'S WORLD / MAY GOD ALL MIGHTY FORGIVE US FOR TURNING AWAY FROM HAVING THE FAITH IN THE LIVING WORD JESUS THE CHRIST / PRAY LIKE YOU NEVER DID BEFORE
Another masterpiece by Sir Carol Reed, who also directed "The Third Man," "Our Man in Havana," and "Oliver," among others. He knew that the essence of a great film was a great screenplay.
Shake Hands with the Devil (1959) In 1920s Ireland, I.R.A. members are being led by the war mongering Dr. Sean Lenihan (James Cagney), as they fight oppressive British forces. - imdb 7.0
This is the movie Harold Pinter includes so brilliantly in his play "Old Times" in which Deeley and Anna battle it out to see who can claim Kate for their own, and the battleground is the day they saw "Odd Man Out". Once you know that, the film feels like a Pinter play in its suspense and precision. Just remarkable.
Just seen this. Fantastic film and engaging with great acting from James Cagney and Don Murray, Michael Redgrave, plus many British well knowns, about Irish IRA against British Black and Tans. Plots, underground meetings, terrorism, politics are all here in this fictional story.
What really stands out for me in this film is the forceful acting of Richard Harris and how it is at odds with Cagney’s more theatrical performance. Cinema was in midst of change.
